A group of strangers who took a double-decker bus to travel around the world have reunited fifty years later. They are very happy to see each other and share their feelings and memories from their journey.
11 people lived in the bus, braved extreme temperatures, and covered long distances before their journey came to an unexpected end after the bus sank into the Chira River in Peru.
Five members of the group shared their stories. David McLaughlin, the driver, said, “We covered close to 40,000 miles over the 20 months or so. And we worked along the way, picking fruit, planting flowers, and cleaning restaurants. It is worth mentioning that the roads were entirely different in Central and South America. We were climbing mountains. It was an adventure.”
However, their adventure soon came to an end. While in Peru, the group came across a bridge that the double-decker could not pass. To try to solve the problem, they floated the bus on the Chira River using a special raft. As a result, the bus sank into the river.
After the experience, the group learnt the value of adventure and the importance of seizing the moment. One member reflected, “Our journey was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” It taught me to always be open to new experiences.

Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveller Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself on Chinese soil, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he'd seen before.
And how great must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia His brain must have been packed with everything he'd seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.
Some people have travelled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That's why the best travel is when it's for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the US. Of course, they've probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on TV, and the White House, and all the other famous sights. But none of that would compare to the excitement of looking out of the window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.
Although travel is often just for recreation, it's also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We're learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn't necessarily the best way.
( ) 18. Why does the author use Marco Polo and Zhang Qian as examples
A. To explain how the Silk Road was founded.
B. To present travel as an amazing experience.
C. To show how the way people travel has changed.
D. To describe important cultural exchanges in history.
( ) 19. What does the author mean by saying “the best travel is when it's for the first time”
A. One's first trip is usually the most challenging.
B. No other trip is better than one's first trip.
C. There is always much to learn on one's first trip.
D. People usually make better preparations for their first trip.
( ) 20. What does the underlined word “recreation” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Fun. B. Risk. C. Learning. D. Knowledge.
( ) 21. What does the author believe according to the last two paragraphs
A. Travelling should be included in formal education.
B. Travelling improves people's confidence in their lifestyle.
C. Foreign journeys can enrich people's knowledge of the world.
D. Foreign ways of life are better than our own way of life at home.

Madagascar, the world's second-largest island country located off Africa's eastern coast, is an island of diverse ecosystems and a biodiversity hotspot. The country has unique wildlife, with 90% of its plants and animals found nowhere else. Madagascar's wildlife creates some of the country's most beautiful scenery and popular spots. One of its conspicuous landscapes, attracting tourists from almost all corners of the Earth, is the Avenue of the Baobabs in the Menabe region. This avenue is made up of numerous baobab trees along the dirt road linking Belon'i Tsiribihina and Morondava, creating a unique and beautiful setting.
Baobab trees are common throughout Madagascar. Of the Earth's eight species, six are native to the country. Some of the baobabs in the country are about 2,800 years old, with trunks rising to 150 feet. The avenue is a row of about 25 baobabs stretching about 260 metres. Other baobab trees are also found in the nearby pastures (牧草地). This road is one of Madagascar's most visited places. It is also the most accessible place to see some of Africa’s oldest baobabs. These trees were once part of a forest that was made up of other plants. However, massive deforestation cleared the area of most trees, leaving the baobabs to grow alone.
The baobab trees along the road and the other species growing in the nearby areas are always under constant threat from the increasing population. The trees also face threats from polluted water from the nearby fields, forest fires, and bushfires. Despite being a popular tourist attraction, the Avenue of the Baobabs has no admission fee or, visitor centre and generates little money for local communities.
Thankfully, non-governmental organisations in partnership with the government have noticed the area and developed activities to protect the avenue. The Ministry of Environment, Ecology, and Forests declared it a temporary protected area in July 2007. In July 2015, the site was declared a national monument (国家保护区), the first in Madagascar. The government and local communities hope the trees can survive for additional 800 years.
( ) 22. What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in the first paragraph mean
A. New. B. Cultural. C. Striking. D. Changing.
( ) 23. What do we know about the Avenue of the Baobabs
A. It is a big forest. B. It has eight baobab species.
C. It consists of many different plants. D. It has Africa's oldest baobabs.
( ) 24. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The risk to local baobab trees.
B. Natural disasters in Madagascar.
C. Poor living conditions in Madagascar.
D. The quality customer service of the avenue.
( ) 25. What kind of feeling is expressed in the last paragraph
A. Curiosity. B. Caution. C. Hopefulness. D. Sympathy.

Nowadays, more and more people like going on trips in the holidays. And the flights and hotels are often too expensive. Do you still want to get away this summer 26 If you're interested in getting a bit closer to nature, and don't mind dirty shoes and wet tents, it might be the holiday for you. However, you'll need to be prepared.
27
Do some planning first. If it's your first time, you don't need to buy every piece of camping equipment — you may never go again! But do get the important things. Most experts say it's worthwhile spending money on a good tent. 28 It suggests getting one that's “a size or two bigger than the number of people using it.” For example, if there are two of you going camping, get a three or four-person tent to have space for your bags.
29 You can put the tent up in your garden, or even put it inside your room, to see what it's like and how it works. There are lots of websites that give you lists of the other things you'll need. But don't forget a first-aid packet and some “just-in-case” things — including extra clothes, food and coats in case (以防) things go wrong.
Think about the place you're going to. Check the facilities (设施) it has, and perhaps choose one close to home in case you forget something or find out that you hate the whole experience!
30
A. If so, here's an idea: Camping. B. Buying the proper tent is a key step. C. It keeps many people from enjoying the fun. D. It's also a good idea to check your tent before you travel. E. Mountain Warehouse is an outdoor equipment company. F. Luckily, there's lots of advice online for the first-time campers. G. But finally, the most important thing that you should care about is to be safe!

【One possible version】
Dear Jack,
I'm writing to share one of my wonderful experiences with you.
Last Friday, my school went on a day trip to a hill surrounded by trees in the suburb. The air was fresh, and the rolling hill was amazing. From the travel, I have found out the real meaning of eco-travel: It not only helps us to love the nature but also arouses our sense of responsibility. All in all, eco-travel should be like this: take nothing away but your memories; leave nothing behind but a clean environment.
I have come to love eco-travel and I hope I can go travelling with you some day.
All the best,
Li Hua
