Have you ever had any conflicts (冲突) with your best friend In fact, even the closest friends can cause conflicts without understanding or enough communication.
Emma and Lily were best friends since junior high school. They shared secrets, hobbies, and laughter. However, things changed when Emma joined a science club. She spent less time with Lily who felt uncomfortable to be ignored (忽视). One day, Lily posted a sad message online, “Some people forget old friends when they find new ones.” Emma saw it and thought Lily was laughing at her. They stopped talking, and their friendship seemed ruined.
After a week of silence, Emma felt hurt and turned to Mrs. Li who was her teacher for help. Mrs. Li told her that friendship conflicts often start with misunderstanding. Here are some tips from Mrs Li:
1. Speak calmly: Use “I feel” sentences instead of blaming (责备).
2. Listen patiently: Understand the other’s feelings.
3. Compromise (妥协): Find the ways that work for both to solve problems.
Emma decided to talk to Lily. She said, “I miss you. I didn’t mean to make you feel ignored.” Lily said sorry too, “I shouldn’t post the sad message online. I was just sad.” They knew their mistakes.
Every friendship has conflicts, but real friends work through them. As the saying goes, “A true friend is someone who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” When we talk honestly (坦诚地), we can turn conflicts into chances to make our friendship even stronger.

Just then, Emma appeared, holding a large umbrella and carrying some books in her arms. Seeing how worried Lily was, she hurried over without thinking twice. “Are you okay ” Emma asked.
“I think I hurt my ankle, ” Lily replied. She had never expected to get help from the quiet girl.

The Many Sides of Me
Introducing myself used to mean stating my name, age, and hometown. But as I grow older, I realize that such facts are just the cover of a book; they don’t reveal the story inside. My name is Wang Lei, and this is a glimpse into the more complex picture of who I am.
I am a collection of contrasts. In the classroom, I am often the quiet observer. I enjoy listening to discussions, analyzing (分析) different viewpoints before forming my own opinion. My teachers sometimes wish I would speak up more, but I believe thoughtful silence is more valuable than thoughtless chatter. This quiet side of me loves the world of books, where I can be a fearless adventurer or a detective (侦探) solving mysteries, all from the comfort of my room.
However, to label me as “shy” would be a mistake. On the basketball court, a different person emerges. The quiet thinker transforms into a loud, strategic (战略的) team player. I communicate constantly, calling for passes and directing defense. The adrenaline rush (肾上腺素飙升) of a fast break and the collective joy of a well-earned victory are feelings I crave. This energetic side needs the court as much as my quiet side needs the library.
These two worlds are not separate; they feed into each other. The strategic thinking I develop on the court helps me plan my arguments in a debate. Conversely, the patience and focus I gain from reading for hours help me stay calm under pressure during a close game. I used to think I had to choose one identity—the scholar or the athlete. Now I understand that they coexist (共存), making me a more balanced individual.
So, “who am I ” is a question with an answer that evolves. I am not just Wang Lei, the student. I am the thinker, the player, the friend, and the dreamer. I am a mosaic (马赛克), still being pieced together, and that is the most exciting part of all.
46.Why does Wang Lei compare basic personal facts to “the cover of a book”
A.Because he loves reading books very much.
B.Because he thinks they are boring and unimportant.
C.Because they are a simple start but don’t show his true character.
D.Because he wants to write a book about himself one day.
47.What is the main advantage of Wang Lei’s “quiet” side in the classroom
A.It makes his teachers like him more.
B.It allows him to avoid answering difficult questions.
C.It helps him to think deeply before speaking.
D.It gives him more time to read his novels.
48.The word “crave” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A.fear B.remember C.describe D.desire strongly
49.How do Wang Lei’s different interests help each other
A.Reading about sports makes him a better player.
B.Skills from one area, like strategy and patience, are useful in the other.
C.Being an athlete makes him more popular so he can discuss books with more people.
D.He has to manage his time well between studying and playing basketball.
50.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Playing basketball is more important than studying for a balanced life.
B.A person’s identity can be multi-layered and integrated, not a single label.
C.It is difficult for a student to be good at both sports and academics.
D.The author is confused about who he really wants to be in the future.

“Am I an ‘I’ person or an ‘E’ person ” It is a popular topic among young people around China today. Many people are crazy about it so that they take a personality test named Myers-Briggs test to find out the answer.
Many people find the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) useful. It groups people into 16 types, which start with the letter “I” or “E”, such as “ENTJ, INFP” or more. “E” is short for “Extroversion” while “I” is for “Introversion”. “I’m an ‘E’ person. I should go to the party and make more friends.” “I’m an ‘E’ person. I’d like to work by myself. I could be a writer in the future.” They believe different types can help them make decisions for activities, jobs or even life choices more quickly.
But there are also problems. Some people take the test for a second time and get different results. Some people find it hard to answer some questions. “I like watching TV by myself. But I also enjoy playing with friends. Am I an ‘I’ or an ‘E’ ”
When you take a personality test, you may think, “Oh, that’s me.” That’s because the descriptions (描述) are generic. They can be used to describe many people. Research has found that over 50 percent of people get a different score when they retook the MBTI just five weeks later. Personalities can change with time, and they are not black-or-white, scientists say. You may be introverted now but become extroverted when you get older. Or, you can be both an “I” and an “E”. Don’t label yourself! Studies have also shown that the test is not real at telling people’s success in different jobs. So, don’t take it too seriously.

When we are little kids, our parents teach us to say “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me”, and “sorry”. Our parents know politeness is important for our growth. So we should learn politeness early.
For an English learner, it’s also a good idea to learn polite language expressions. Here are two pieces of advice, and we’ll give you some ________ to better understand them.
1. Use modal verbsWhen we use modal verbs, like would, could or may, we can turn a direct (直接的) question into a polite request. → Could you please give me the salt → Could you please tell me where the supermarket is 2. Change the grammar This way may be unusual but it’s true. To be more polite, speakers often change the tense (时态). In English, the simple present tense sounds too direct, so speakers change the present tense into the past tense. → I wondered if you had time.
These pieces of advice are about polite language. Being polite in how we act is also important because it can make others feel respected and improve our relationships with others. Learn more with EF English E-Magazine after paying (付款).

Some experts discover that the weaker maths abilities in English-speaking children are related to English number words. However, the Chinese language has simpler number words. Chinese expresses maths concepts (概念) more clearly than English.
Chinese has just ten basic number words. English, however, has more than twenty. The trouble starts at “11”. English has a word (“eleven”) for that number. The Chinese language has words that can be translated as “ten-one”—spoken with the “ten” first. That makes it easier for the Chinese children to understand the place value (位值). Students can easily see the number system is based on the units of 10.
English number words over 10 don’t make the place value clear. Words for numbers 13 to 19 change the order of the ones and tens. Children are more likely to confuse (使迷惑;混淆) 17 with 71. Therefore, children working with English number words have a harder time doing complex calculations (复杂计算). They make more mistakes.
It also feels more natural for Chinese speakers than for English speakers to use the “make-a-ten” method. When adding two numbers, Chinese students often break down the numbers into parts and regroup them into tens and ones. For example, 9 plus 5 becomes 9 plus 1 plus 4. This method greatly helps students work out maths problems. Many teachers in America are also teaching their students the “make-a-ten” method. However, they are having a hard time because of the confusing English number words.
Now you should feel lucky that you are learning maths in China. Thanks to your native language, all the maths problems have become less difficult and less confusing.
78.Why does Chinese express maths concepts more clearly than English

It can even be some birds outside the classroom window, or a group of kids who are talking loudly as they pass the door to your room.
Finally, You need to take notes because you will not remember everything the teacher said. You’ll have to take down the notes so that you can study it after class.
