It’s 12km from Pelegrinska on the Eastern tip of Hvar Island, across a 3km channel of water to and around the coast of Palmizana island and I’m attempting to swim this distance. I’m taking part in UltraSwim 33.3, an open-water event that challenges swimmers to cover the distance of an English Channel swim. This may seem an odd way to start an article about writing. But I’ve long told students that writing a novel is less like a flash of inspiration and more like swimming the Channel.
Training for the UltraSwim meant gradually increasing my distance, strengthening my technique, and adapting to cold water. That is exactly like writing. Just as you can build physical tirelessness, you can build creative staying power. For swimming, that meant cold water adaptability and learning to eat properly between swims. For writing, it means writing even when the words feel off and learning to rewrite what doesn’t work. Each week I saw my swim times improve, just as my early drafts began to read less like notes and more like chapters.
This isn’t just my theory. Other authors have found similar inspiration in swimming. Even Hemingway was known for his love of swimming. The pool at his Key West home was more than just a luxury; it was a place for reflection, writing and escape. He swam elsewhere, too: in Spain, in France, wherever life took him.
There’s a moment, somewhere towards the end of a long swim, when your arms ache and every fibre of your being wants out. But you keep going and touch the finish line. And then you collapse and say you will never do that again. The funny thing is, the swimmers were, within minutes of receiving their medals, already talking about “next year”— about training more seriously and coming back stronger. That’s the part most non-writers don’t understand: finishing the first draft of a novel isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of editing, rewriting, restructuring. You’ve made it to the other side, but the tide (潮汐) is already pulling you back for another pass.
24. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To describe a swimming route. B. To explain a competition’s rules.
C. To connect two seemingly different things. D. To showcase an athletic achievement.
25. In what sense are swimming and writing similar according to the text
A. Adaptability and gradual progress are key. B. They require sudden bursts of inspiration.
C. Physical strength is irrelevant to creativity. D. It takes a high level of focus to do them well.
26. Why does the author mention Hemingway’s swimming pool in Key West
A. To criticize his luxurious lifestyle.
B. To suggest sporty writers can easily succeed.
C. To highlight how swimming fueled his writing.
D. To compare it with modern swimming facilities.
27. What does the author say about finishing the first draft of a novel
A. It’s like winning a swimming medal. B. It leads to the next phase of hard work.
C. It marks the final step of the writing process. D. It’s less important than the initial brainstorming.

The numerous bacteria that naturally inhabit the human body seem to help us in many ways. One group is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type of gut (肠道) bacteria known as Blautia, which has made headlines recently because it seems to produce some really remarkable effects. Now, a Chinese team is glimpsing another potential benefit of Blautia: helping people adapt to high altitudes. Their findings suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others perform better in these challenging environments.
Qing-Peng Kong, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters. Despite the thin air, the men ate similar food as they had at home, minimizing the effects of diet changes on their gut bacteria. After 2 days, Blautia went from being rare to very abundant in their guts.
In the second experiment, the team exposed mice to controlled low-oxygen conditions in the lab first and then simulated (模拟) an altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every other day. The Blautia-treated mice showed milder response of altitude sickness. This opens the door into whether altitude sickness might be amenable to treatment through the gut.
The bacteria’s effect may also extend to the brain. “Its superpower comes from the connection between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley College. The fatty acids it makes are known to activate receptors (神经末梢) on nerves that connect the digestive system, heart and brain. This could help explain a surprising relationship that Klepac-Cerak reported last year: Kids are more likely to talk and laugh when they have more Blautia in their guts. “There’s lots of communication happening between our brain; we are just beginning to uncover what services bacteria do for us.” Klepac-Cerak notes.
Blautia’s apparent superpowers suggest to Kong it could serve as a supplement (补充) that benefits people regardless of whether they are planning a trip to Tibet. But first, Kong says, he wants to find out whether Blautia is a “solo” player or has these protective effects only as part of a larger group of bacteria.
28. What’s the newly-found benefit of the study led by a Chinese team
A. It gets public attention. B. It helps people do better at high altitudes.
C. It makes social media angry. D. It introduces an advanced new technology.
29. What do we know about the subjects (实验对象) in both experiments
A. They experienced low-oxygen conditions.
B They received Blautia in their diet.
C. They moved to high-altitude regions.
D. They suffered severe altitude sickness.
30. What does the underlined word “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean ”.
A. Careless B. Untreatable. C. Unchangeable D. Reactive.
31. How would both Kong and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s role in human health
A. double-edged sword. B. A solo player.
C. An extremely effective solution. D. A partially-understood influence
D
Fishing is a way of life for people who live on the floating villages of Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake. These Southeast Asians depend on fish in the lake. But those fish are in trouble.
Overall, their numbers in Tonle Sap Lake have been falling sharply. Compared to the number in 2003, just 12 percent as many could be found in 2019. Chevalier was part of a team that shared those data in Science of the Total Environment. “If the tendency continues,” he says, “there will be nothing for people there to eat any more.”
Dams (大坝) are a big problem, Chevalier says. These structures break up river systems. With growing human populations, overfishing becomes more of a threat. As people keep fishing, the share of fish left there could decrease even more. Pollution threatens freshwater ecosystems, too. People have also been changing the land in ways that damages the habitat in lakes and streams. And then there’s a growing number of non-native harmful species. Lastly, global warming has been causing harm by stressing both fish and their food sources.
Still, the situation isn’t hopeless. Researchers are working to identify the most effective ways to change that. One way is to remove outdated or ill-placed dams. The largest such U. S. project took down four dams from the lower Klamath River. Soon after, thousands of salmon (鲑鱼) were swimming upstream through this newly opened stretch. Elsewhere, dam operators can reduce harm by changing river flows. Limiting flow too much can cause downstream areas to dry up. Smarter dam placement would also help.
“Restoring habitat can help if done right. But this work costs money. And it’s hard to restore entire streams,” John Gray, a fish biologist, says. In 2022, scientists tried repopulating some fish species at Tonle Sap Lake. However, nearly half the fish were caught less than three months later.
With each success or failure, scientists learn how better to deal with these big problems. Teens can get involved. Many conservation groups welcome help from people of any age.
32. Why is fishing mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To present a way of living. B. To state the best fishing place.
C. To lead to the main concern. D. To stress the value of tradition.
33. Which of the following is a way to settle the problem caused by dams
A. Increasing the use of dams.
B. Turning dams into river habitats.
C. Choosing the locations for dams wisely.
D. Limiting the river water flowing downstream.
34. What does Gray think of restoring habitat
A. It has limited benefits. B. It is useless.
C. It will bring worse results. D. It is money-saving.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. Remove Old Dams B. Threats to Southeast Asian Population
C. Benefits of Protecting Fish D. Help Tonle Sap Fish Survive

Everyone who knows the joy of loving an animal will also experience the sorrow of losing them. Here are heartfelt ways to heal (治愈) and honor their memory.
Give yourself permission. If you’re heartbroken after the loss of your pet, you’re far from alone. Countless pet owners said they cried more for their animal than a human. That’s because animals don’t care what their owners look like, what they drive and where they live. ____36____ Thus, allow yourself to feel the loss of unconditional love.
Stop blaming yourself. One of the most common emotions we feel when we lose a furry family member is guilt. Pet parents will say things like they didn’t walk their animal enough. ____37____ So repeat a sentence: I feel guilt, and it’s normal. This helps you catch it, before it goes deeper.
Make feelings tangible (可感知). Those who experience a sudden loss of a companion animal may find themselves in a state of shock. ____38____ Looking at pictures of your animal and journaling your feelings are both ways to concretize the loss early in the process.
____39____ It’s widely known that animals are often more perceptive than humans. They may have taught you patience or helped you learn how to live in the moment. Incorporate (融合) these lessons into your life, and the spirit of your pet will always be with you.
Open your heart again. If you wait until you no longer miss your animal, you may never be ready to welcome another. It’s advisable to acknowledge your sorrow while also opening your heart to the joy a new pet can bring. This starts with creating a loving environment for both you and your new furry friend. ____40____
A. Reflect on their wisdom.
B. Acknowledging this death is crucial.
C. It’s rare to have a relationship this pure.
D. This often comes from a sense of powerlessness.
E. Hold a gathering to remember what they brought you.
F. Some people find comfort in creating a memorial garden.
G. It’s important to treat your emotional state with mercy.

Marta had been a homemaker for 27 years. Looking after the family has always been her job. Since her daughters were married and her husband retired, she decided to get a job to experience a new life. She noticed the ice cream shop in her neighborhood and applied there.
Due to a labor shortage, the owners, a middle-aged couple, were delighted to hire her. Three months later, Marta loved her job. One morning, Carol, the woman owner, explained that her husband David had the flu. Carol worried about running out of ice cream but said making more was impossible because it was David’s job and he was protective of his machines. The ice cream room was locked, and David refused to share the key location because he was worried that Carol wouldn’t know how to do it at all.
Marta encouraged Carol to call David, but he insisted on coming in to make the ice cream himself. Carol only persuaded him to stay in bed by promising not to attempt making ice cream. Marta felt sorry for Carol and urged her to prove her capability. Despite her worry of not matching David’s skill, Carol agreed to try.
While Carol served the customers, Marta began her own search. She started from the obvious places—drawers and apron (围裙) pockets—but found nothing. She checked inside the fridges and the dishwasher. Nothing.
Then her eyes fell on a large horseshoe magnet (磁铁) lying on a shelf in the storeroom. It was just what she needed! She ran it over the sides of boxes of cups. Then through piles of kitchen towels and stacks of paper napkins. No place was ruled out.
When she took the magnet to the bag of sugar, she almost missed the faint stirring of the tiny crystals (晶体). She realised that something other than that sugar was in the bag.
Marta moved the magnet around slowly until, eventually, a key jumped out and stuck to it. Marta handed the key over to Carol. “Now I’ll serve the customers while you go and do the magic,” she encouraged Carol.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

18. Why did Alpine farmers originally use cowbells
A. To decorate the cattle. B. To track their cattle. C. To celebrate traditions.
19. What is mentioned about the tone of cowbells
A. Farmers change the tone yearly.
B. Each cowbell has a different tone.
C. The tone represents the size of the cow.
20. Why are Swiss cowbells expensive
A. They are made of costly metals.
B. They were produced long ago.
C. They are handmade and culturally significant.
【答案】18. B 19. B 20. C
【原文】M:The origins of the Swiss cowbell date back centuries, to be exact, over 900 years. As Alpine farmers moved their cattle between high and low grasslands, they needed a reliable means to track them. The cowbell, with its ring, provided just that. Each bell has a unique tone that identifies any individual cow. Over time, it changed, not just in form but in significance, integrating itself into Swiss culture. For the Swiss, cowbells are symbolic of their connection with nature, their deep-rooted traditions, and the beauty of the Alps.
There are only about six main cowbell makers left in Switzerland. The bells are handmade and can last for decades. Craftsmanship is highly valued. For travellers, Swiss cowbells have become beloved souvenirs. They’re not just reminders of a trip, but a slice of Swiss tradition. Whether hung on doorways or displayed on shelves, they serve as a symbol of the Alps’ breathtaking scenery and calmness it brings.
Given the craftsmanship and cultural importance, genuine Swiss cowbells don’t come cheap. While Swiss cowbell prices vary based on size, material, and delicacy of design, some can cost hundreds, if not thousands, of Swiss francs. It’s a worthy price for a piece of Swiss heritage.

【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31.

I’m glad to share my recent experiences participating in environmental protection activities.
Last month, I joined a local volunteer group to clean up a nearby park. We picked up litter, sorted recyclables, and even planted some trees to improve the green space. It was hard, but seeing the park become cleaner was truly rewarding. Additionally, I worked in a community workshop to raise awareness about reducing plastic use and making eco-friendly choices in our daily life.
These activities made me realize how small actions can make a big difference. I will do more in the future. How about your experiences

【答案】 Carol resolved to succeed, following the recipes carefully. She entered the ice - cream making room, her hands a bit shaky at first. But as she got started, her confidence grew. She measured the ingredients precisely, poured them into the machines, and set the controls according to the instructions. The familiar smell of ice - cream in the making filled the air. She watched closely as the mixture started to transform into the creamy delight they were known for.
Suddenly, David arrived, surprised to see the scene. His eyes widened as he saw Carol working skillfully in the ice - cream room. At first, he was a bit shocked, but then a smile spread across his face. He walked over to Carol and said, “I see you didn't need me after all.” Carol laughed and replied, “Thanks to Marta, I managed. It's time you trusted me more.” David nodded, realizing his over - protectiveness was unnecessary. From then on, David and Carol worked together more harmoniously, and Marta felt proud of her part in bringing this change.
