Selling used books is easier than ever, thanks to technology. AbeBooks is a global platform to sell rare books, textbooks, fine art, collectibles, maps, comics, and paper collectibles. Because this site is best-known for rare books, it’s a good place for people who want to sell first editions and antique books.
How to sell used books on AbeBooks
There is a minimum $25/month membership fee to start selling, and that’s for 0 — 500 books listed on the site. The tiered (阶梯式的) pricing goes up from there, all the way to $500/ month if you have over 50,000 books in their system.
Sellers need to describe, store and ship the items themselves, and you also get to set your own shipping rates and speeds. Anything you list is automatically listed on their six international platforms for a much wider reach.
If you only want to sell a few books — like you want to offload some rare books you inherited (继承) from your great aunt, or you want to sell last semester’s textbooks — AbeBooks has a buyback program. They work with TextbookRush for textbooks and Ziffit for everything else.
AbeBooks does not accept low-quality or damaged items. But the biggest downside of selling used books on AbeBooks is the selling fees, which are higher than most sites. Here are the fees:
●$25/ month + monthly membership fee
●8% commission (佣金)
●5.5% credit card processing fee
On the upside, you get to list your books on a site that’s known for rare, classical, or collectible books. Importantly, those books are listed internationally at no extra charge. That’s why it’s possible to list your books on AbeBooks for more than on other sites.
1. Which of the following books are most popular with AbeBooks?
A. Inherited ancient books. B. Mass-market paperbacks.
C. Newly-published textbooks. D. Children’s hand-drawn pictures.
2. What is a requirement for sellers to sell used books on AbeBooks?
A. Cover their shipping rates themselves. B. Keep a supply of at least 500 books.
C. Pay a monthly membership fee. D. List books on six international platforms.
3. What is the main advantage of selling used books on AbeBooks?
A. Much lower selling fees. B. High-quality membership service.
C. Wider international reach at no extra cost. D. Accepting diverse books regardless of condition.

While many teenage girls are busy with their nails and music, Faye Carey, a 16-year-old from Waikato, devotes her time to helping abandoned dogs find new homes. She volunteers at her local Animal Control branch and has set up a Facebook page to advertise dogs in need of adoption.
Faye’s journey began during her work experience week at Animal Control. “I picked up a puppy (小狗) on my first day, and he was still there on my last day. I felt so sorry for him,” she recalls. She decided to advertise the puppy on TradeMe, which led to him finding a loving home in Auckland. Inspired, Faye created a Facebook page advertising puppies and dogs that needed to be adopted.
Her page now has nearly 30,000 likes. To date, Faye has successfully rehomed over 60 dogs. “Her efforts take a lot of pressure off the shelter,” says Vaughan Oliver, an Animal Control officer. “She presents our dogs in the best light, giving them a second chance at life.”
Every Friday, Faye volunteers at Animal Control, grooming (梳理) puppies and photographing them for her Facebook page. She also spends several hours each night arranging viewings, setting up adoptions, and replying to emails. It can be stressful to balance this with school assignments and household duties, but Faye is passionate about her work. “It’s rewarding and makes it all worthwhile,” she says.
The shelter receives up to 20 new dogs each week, mostly surrendered by owners who can’t care for them anymore. With Faye’s help, these dogs often find suitable homes quickly. “She restores my faith in the community,” says Mr. Oliver.
Despite still being in high school, Faye hopes to pursue a career in Animal Control. “I enjoy working with people and making a difference,” she says. Animal Control is grateful for her contribution. “We’re lucky to have her,” Mr. Oliver adds. “She does a fantastic job.” Faye continues to post pictures of adoptable dogs on her Facebook page each week, committed to giving more dogs a second chance.
4. What inspired Faye Carey to start helping abandoned dogs?
A. A suggestion from Vaughan Oliver.
B. Her love for animals since childhood.
C. A puppy’s hardship in her work experience week.
D. Her desire to gain work experience in Animal Control.
5. How has Faye’s Facebook page contributed to her efforts in rehoming dogs?
A. It has allowed her to find more dogs. B. It has given dogs a platform for adoption.
C. It has increased the number of displaced dogs. D. It has provided financial support for dog adoptions.
6. What does the underlined word “surrendered” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Rejected. B. Influenced. C. Deserted. D. Forgotten.
7. What is Faye’s future desire?
A. To open her own animal shelter. B. To become a professional dog trainer.
C. To organize nationwide adoption campaigns. D. To land an occupation in animal management.
C
Cockatoos are known for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities. Unlike crows, they have strong beaks (喙), which help them tackle complex challenges. In the past, scientists observed them opening heavy trash can covers to find food.
In 2018, Dr. Barbara Klump noticed a cockatoo drinking from a public drinking fountain. She thought someone had left the water running by mistake. But after looking at a video, she realized that the bird was actually turning on the fountain by itself.
Dr. Klump and her team decided to study the cockatoos more closely. They labeled 24 cockatoos and set up two cameras near a drinking fountain that the birds used often. The cameras recorded 14 hours of video over 44 days and gained 525 instances of the birds using the fountain.
The study found that about 70% of the birds made efforts to use the fountain. Each bird used at least one foot to hold down the handle, while some placed their other foot on the spout (喷口). After turning on the water, they would drink.
“It’s a bit of an awkward body position they have to hold,” said Lucy Aplin, one of the scientists involved in the study. “The birds only got water in about 41% of their efforts to use the fountain. They had an especially hard time when they were in a hurry or when other cockatoos were trying to use the fountain at the same time.”
The scientists aren’t exactly sure why the cockatoos started using the drinking fountains. They say one possible reason is that the clean water tastes better to them than water from a stream. Another possibility is that drinking from the fountain feels safer, since it makes it easier to keep an eye out for birds that might attack them, like eagles. Dr. Klump noted the birds might simply enjoy the challenge of making the fountain work. “If… you’re not dying of thirst,” she says, “Then why not do something you enjoy?”
8. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The process of the study. B. The result of the study.
C. The background of the study. D. The significance of the study.
9. What did Dr. Klump’s team discover about the cockatoos’ use of the drinking fountain?
A. Only a few cockatoos were interested in using the fountain.
B. Cockatoos are fond of the taste of the water in the fountains.
C. Most cockatoos managed to use the fountain despite difficulties.
D. Cockatoos preferred drinking from the fountain to eating wastes.
10. Why might drinking from fountains feel “safer” for cockatoos?
A. It enables them to avoid human intervention. B. It helps them spot potential threats earlier.
C. It reduces competition with other animals. D. It provides warmer water in cold weather.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Mystery of Cockatoos’ Survival Skills B. The Way Animals Learn to Use Human Tools
C. Urban Birds: Adapting to Human Environments D. Clever Cockatoos: Learning to Use Water Fountains
D
Having nightmares (噩梦) on a weekly basis seems to speed up aging and may increase the risk of early death, according to a study by Abidemi Otaiku at Imperial College London. Otaiku and his colleagues analyzed data from over 183,000 adults aged 26 to 86 who had participated in several studies. At the start, participants reported their nightmare frequency, and were subsequently tracked for up to 19 years.
The research revealed that those with weekly nightmares were more than three times as likely to die before reaching 70 compared to those who rarely or never had nightmares. Otaiku emphasized a clear link between nightmare frequency and premature death, noting it was a stronger predictor than smoking, overweight, poor diet, or lack of physical activity. He is set to present these findings at the European Academy of Neurology Congress in 2025.
To assess the participants’ biological age, the team measured telomere (端粒) length, which shortens with each cell division and is associated with premature aging. The study also included data from about 2,400 children aged 8 to 10, whose nightmare frequency was reported by their parents. Adults’ biological age was further evaluated using epigenetic clocks (表观遗传时钟).
Otaiku found a consistent association between frequent nightmares and sped-up aging. Children with more frequent nightmares had shorter telomeres, indicating faster cellular aging. In adults, this sped-up biological aging accounted for about 40% of the increased death risk.
Otaiku suggested two possible reasons for this association. First, nightmares raise stress hormone cortisol levels, linked to faster cellular aging. Second, disturbed sleep impacts the body’s nightly cellular repair processes, increasing the risk of various medical conditions, including heart disease.
Otaiku advised simple steps to avoid regular nightmares, such as avoiding scary movies and seeking treatment for anxiety. Guy Leschziner from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust highlighted the biological reasonableness of the findings but stressed the need for more research to establish causality, as nightmares could be associated with other age-related medical conditions and medications.
12. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. By presenting facts. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing statistics. D. By interviewing participants.
13. Why did the researchers use both telomeres and epigenetic clocks in the study?
A. To make age measurement easier. B. To confirm DNA damage from nightmares.
C. To compare aging speeds in children and adults. D. To understand biological age more comprehensively.
14 What is Guy Leschziner’s attitude towards the findings of the study?
A. Completely opposed. B. Skeptical and dismissive.
C. Enthusiastically supportive. D. Partially positive but reserved.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Ways to prevent nightmares are widely explored.
B. Nightmares are common among people of all ages.
C. Weekly nightmares may lead to faster aging and early death.
D. The European Academy of Neurology Congress focuses on nightmares.

Lila knelt in the community garden, patting soil around her sunflower seedlings (幼苗). The annual Green Thumb Contest was three weeks away, and she’d spent every afternoon tending her plot — dreaming of the first-place prize: a set of gardening tools.
“You’re really going all out this year,” said Mia, her neighbor and friendly competitor, as she watered her own plot of lively marigolds. The two girls had been competing in the contest since they were kids. “Those sunflowers might just beat my marigolds for tallest plant.”
Lila smiled. “That’s the plan! Your flowers are looking pretty amazing too, though.” She admired the golden-orange flowers that seemed to shine in the sunlight. For the next two weeks, the girls worked side by side every afternoon, sharing tips and laughing as they tended their gardens. They marked their plants’ growth with little wooden sticks, their friendly competition pushing both to do their best.
Then disaster struck. After a heavy summer rain, Lila arrived to find her prized sunflowers drooping (下垂), their leaves spotted with ugly black marks. “Oh no!” she cried, her heart sinking. Mia came running over and examined the plants carefully. “It’s blight (枯萎病),”she said. “The damp weather caused it.”
Lila tried everything to save her plants — special sprays, extra nutrients — but each day more leaves turned black. The contest was just one week away when she sat sadly among her failing sunflowers, tears in her eyes. All her hard work was disappearing before her.
The next morning, Mia appeared at Lila’s garden with a plate of bright, healthy marigold seedlings. “Here,” she said. “Plant these between your sunflowers. They’re resistant to blight and will help fill in the empty spaces.” Lila stared at her friend in surprise. “But… what about your own garden? You need these!” Mia just smiled. “Some things are more important than winning. Besides, our gardens look better when we help each other.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The annual Green Thumb Contest came at last.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The annual Green Thumb Contest came at last.

【答案】One possible version:
The annual Green Thumb Contest came at last. Lila’s garden was a breathtaking mix of towering sunflowers and golden marigolds, the two types of plants supporting each other beautifully. When the judges came by, they were amazed by how the flowers matched perfectly with each other. To everyone’s surprise — especially Lila — her garden won first prize! As she accepted the shiny gardening tools, her first thought was to share them with Mia. “We won this together,” she said, holding out half the set to her friend. Mia’s eyes shone with happiness as she accepted the gift.
Lila hugged Mia tightly, and then turned to address the crowd. “This contest taught me something much more valuable than how to grow prize-winning flowers,” she announced. “It showed me that when we work together, we can create something more beautiful than we ever could alone.” The next summer, the girls combined their plots into one large garden, and soon other neighbors began joining in. What started as a competition had grown into a community project, with everyone contributing their skills and sharing in the joy of creating something wonderful together.
