I. Background Information
Teaching Content 沪教版 7A Unit5: Off to space Writing: Writing a post about a dream trip to space
Design Principles This course is designed based on the unit-based teaching concept proposed in the “Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards (2022 Edition)”. This unit is centered around the theme "Off to space". This content is written around the topic of “A dream trip to space”, continuing the theme of the unit. Through David’s mind map and sample posts, it provides a writing framework for students. In the overall unit teaching, the aim is to enhance students’ English writing skills and deepen their understanding of the theme of space exploration.
Learner Profiles Students have acquired certain space-related vocabulary and expressions, and possess basic English writing skills. However, they need to improve in terms of the systematicity of writing conception, content expansion, and logical organization. Junior high school students are highly interested in space exploration. We can use this interest to drive their writing. Through task-based activities, they can overcome writing difficulties and gradually enhance their writing skills and thinking quality.”
Teaching Objectives By the end of the class, students will be able to: use the vocabulary and sentences related to space themes, and apply the structures and writing techniques learned in this class to write a post. use mind maps and timelines to organize their writing ideas. Lead-in (3 minutes)
Step 1 (2 mins) Watch a real-life video of three Chinese astronauts living in space and ask students some questions: Have you ever dreamt of travelling to space Where will you go What will you do By watching real videos of Chinese astronauts’ life in space, we aim to activate students’ cognition of space exploration and stimulate their interest in learning.
Step 2 (1mins) One of the astronauts—Wang Yaping, has invited you to participate in the post competition. “Dear future astronauts, our space agency is looking for the best bloggers! Your task is to write a blog post about “A dream trip to space”. The winner will receive a virtual tour of China's space station. David was the winner of the previous competition. Let's see and study how David finished it!” Create a realistic scene and clearly define the writing goals. Establish the connection between “model text study” and “autonomous creation”, providing motivation for the analysis of the model texts in the pre-writing stage.
Pre-Writing (13 minutes)
Step 3 (2 mins) Why was David’s blog the best Many people have dreamt of space travel, and David shared his idea in a blog. Let’s read his post to see how to describe a space trip clearly. We will analyze his writing structure and techniques and use them to prepare for your own plete the mind map and then read the post to see if you were right. Guide students to independently summarize the writing structure by analyzing David’s winning blog post, thereby cultivating their ability to analyze the text.

While-writing (16 mins)
Step 5 (2 mins) Let’s review the structure and writing techniques that we have just learned and use mind maps to summarize. Organize scattered knowledge into a mind map and provide a clear framework for independent writing.

Post-writing (12 mins)
Step 7 (8 mins) After completing the first draft, first, the students revised their work based on the self-assessment form. Then, they exchanged their essays with their group members and commented on each essay according to the evaluation form. Each group selects an outstanding piece of work and prepares to present it to the whole class. After the display, other students can raise questions and offer suggestions, and the teacher will summarize and provide comments. Step 8 (2 mins) Based on the comments from both group self-evaluation and class-wide evaluation, the students revised and improved their essays to create the final work. Based on the suggestions provided by the teacher and classmates, the students made revisions and summaries.
Step 9 (2 mins) Theme elevation Watch the real space lecture by Wang Yaping and the whole class will read together: “Space exploration needs courage. Our words today may become actions tomorrow!” Add the sentence into your article: My post shows the spirit of exploration by.... Watch the space lecture videos, link the writing tasks to real space exploration, and let students experience the spirit of “space exploration requires courage”, while also instilling cultural awareness. Through collective reading of the pledge, achieve emotional resonance.
