Tony is a student in Grade 8. He used to hate running—he thought it was boring and he could never run fast. Last month, his school held a 1000-meter race. His class teacher asked him to join, and Tony said, “It’s impossible! I’ll be the last one.” But the teacher said, “Just have a try. 只要你坚持,你可能会给自己带来惊喜。”
Tony decided to try. Every morning, he ran around the school playground for 20 minutes. At first, he felt very tired after 5 minutes and wanted to stop. His friend Chen Yu, who was good at running, ran with him and said, “Don’t give up! Slow down if you need to, but keep going.” Tony followed his advice. After two weeks, he could run the whole 1000 meters without stopping.
On the day of the race, Tony was nervous but ready. When the starting gun rang, he ran at his own pace. At the 800-meter mark, he felt tired, but he remembered his teacher’s words and Chen Yu’s help. He tried harder and finally finished in 4 minutes and 10 seconds—he got 5th place! He was so happy. In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes since the fall term started. The governments want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.
Before, Chinese schools usually had 10-minute breaks. But it was not enough time for students, especially those in tall buildings, to go outside and play. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave the classroom during breaks because they were worried about safety.
Now, local education departments (部门) are trying to make school schedules better. They want students to have at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
In Beijing, primary schools’ morning and afternoon times haven’t changed. Middle schools end five minutes later.
In Wuxi, Jiangsu, schools have 15-minute breaks and one PE class every day. Students must do at least 100 minutes of exercise at school daily. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other. They want to give break time back to students.
A Qingdao primary school has many outdoor games like jump rope and hula hoop, and indoor puzzles during 15-minute breaks. In May, a fitness test showed that 40 percent of Qingdao students got “excellent” or “good” fitness grades, 10 percent more than before.
