Molly Bremner is very short and thin, but she has a heart as big as the sky.
The nine-year-old girl is from Melbourne, Australia. She likes running in her free time. And she has been running for as long as her mother Angela can remember. “When Molly started walking, she was at one speed (速度), which was full speed,” Angela said. “She didn’t walk. She just ran everywhere.” Usually, from Monday to Friday, Molly runs 6 km a day after school and on weekends she runs 21 km.
Now she is in training to run 625 km in 16 days from Melbourne (墨尔本) to Canberra (堪培拉). The activity will start next month. Molly plans to run it to raise money for children with brain cancer (脑癌).
According to Angela, the illness sadly took the life of Molly’s sister, Phoebe, when their big sister Lucy was just two years old. Molly is the only person in the whole family who never got to meet Phoebe because she died before Molly was born. When she heard what happened to Phoebe, she didn’t feel good and had the idea to do this run for Children’s Cancer Institute (儿童癌症协会). “It’s something she wants to do for Phoebe.” said Angela.
Molly now can run 42 km in five hours and 59 minutes. And when she goes for her normal 21-km run, it’s like a slow walk for her and it takes her two hours and 45 minutes. She doesn’t get out of breath and talks to her mother the whole time.

Tony is a student in Grade 8. He used to hate running—he thought it was boring and he could never run fast. Last month, his school held a 1000-meter race. His class teacher asked him to join, and Tony said, “It’s impossible! I’ll be the last one.” But the teacher said, “Just have a try. 只要你坚持,你可能会给自己带来惊喜。”
Tony decided to try. Every morning, he ran around the school playground for 20 minutes. At first, he felt very tired after 5 minutes and wanted to stop. His friend Chen Yu, who was good at running, ran with him and said, “Don’t give up! Slow down if you need to, but keep going.” Tony followed his advice. After two weeks, he could run the whole 1000 meters without stopping.
On the day of the race, Tony was nervous but ready. When the starting gun rang, he ran at his own pace. At the 800-meter mark, he felt tired, but he remembered his teacher’s words and Chen Yu’s help. He tried harder and finally finished in 4 minutes and 10 seconds—he got 5th place! He was so happy. In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes since the fall term started. The governments want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.
Before, Chinese schools usually had 10-minute breaks. But it was not enough time for students, especially those in tall buildings, to go outside and play. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave the classroom during breaks because they were worried about safety.
Now, local education departments (部门) are trying to make school schedules better. They want students to have at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
In Beijing, primary schools’ morning and afternoon times haven’t changed. Middle schools end five minutes later.
In Wuxi, Jiangsu, schools have 15-minute breaks and one PE class every day. Students must do at least 100 minutes of exercise at school daily. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other. They want to give break time back to students.
A Qingdao primary school has many outdoor games like jump rope and hula hoop, and indoor puzzles during 15-minute breaks. In May, a fitness test showed that 40 percent of Qingdao students got “excellent” or “good” fitness grades, 10 percent more than before.

According to the National Health Commission (NHC, 国家卫生健康委员会), by 2030, more than 70% of adults in China and over 30% of children could be overweight or obese (肥胖的) if no action is taken.
Being overweight can make everyday activities hard and make people feel terrible about themselves. More importantly, being overweight can lead to serious health problems like heart problems, diabetes (糖尿病), and even some kinds of cancer (癌症). The NHC has started the Weight Management Year (体重管理年) program to encourage healthy lifestyles.
So, do you know how to manage weight First, try to have good eating habits. Eat meals at proper times. Have breakfast every day and finish dinner by 7 pm. Eat until 70% full and eat slowly. Begin with vegetables, then meat, and finally rice or noodles. This helps control how much you eat. Second, getting enough sleep is also important, at least 7 hours a night. What’s more, you should do exercise often. Try to exercise for 150 to 300 minutes each week, like walking or bike-riding. Add strength (力量) training 2 to 3 times a week. Don’t sit for too long. Stand up and move every hour.
Experts remind us that weight management is not a short-term goal. It’s a lifelong habit. In a word, we should eat well, stay active and have enough sleep to control our weight. Remember, small changes can make a big difference!

Physical activity is important and we often plan to do it. However, we don’t often think about making time to exercise as a family. When we find time for family games or movie nights, we often forget family sport. Family exercise may seem silly, but there are many benefits (益处).
35 By spending family time on physical activity together, you encourage your children to exercise and build lifelong habits. When children see physical activity as an enjoyable thing to do together, they may keep family exercise as a family-time tradition as they grow up.
36 Children get more life skills at home than they do anywhere else. Teamwork is taught and encouraged in sport. By exercising together, you’re encouraging teamwork and working together to achieve a common goal, which helps teach children the importance of goal setting as a team.
37 Parents are great encouragers in education and sport. You can give your children encouragement when doing family sport.
It may be all well and good to think about exercising together as a family, but it may be difficult to get started. Here is some advice for you.
☆ 38 Take turns on who gets to choose the physical activity. Maybe you enjoy traditional exercise while your child wants to dance. On your exercising day, encourage your child to follow along. Then allow your child to choose the next family physical activity.
☆ 39 Staying safe is always something important to think about for not only children but parents as well. Choose the activity with your child’s abilities in mind. If some of your family members are not good at running, try to slow down or have them ride a bike along.

You’re walking down the street, thinking about your own business when a stranger passes by. He doesn’t say anything at all, but he gives you a smile. Sometimes in a moment and almost unwillingly, you will do the same thing. You just can’t help it and you catch his smile. For some unknown reason, when we see someone smile, we just can’t stop ourselves doing the same thing.
In honor of World Smile Day (the first Friday in October), it’s the time we got real answers to this matter. Is smiling contagious (感染性的) Well, a study in the Trends in Cognitive Sciences magazine gives the answer “yes”. As part of it, psychologists (心理学家) looked into why we often copy people’s facial expressions when we talk to them.
Interestingly, one of the results was that we “try on” the emotions (感情) of others when we are talking with them. So, for example, when a friend tells us some good news happily, we may show the same emotion through our smile. In doing so, we are feeling and understanding their joy. So the reason we smile back when someone smiles at us is that we want to feel the same way as that person.
However, not everyone can do this. During the research, the psychologists find people with some illnesses can’t copy others’ facial expressions. They know someone is smiling but they cannot smile back.
