On May 31, 2024, my husband and I got the worst phone call of our lives. Our wonderful, quirky, loyal, hardworking child had died by suicide. In the haze of days that followed, what kept coming to mind was that while it was too late to save my child, it wasn’t too late to help someone else who was ___1___.

15 TH OCT 2023 CULTURE Gazelle Twin, a composer, producer, and musician, opens up about being a conceptual artist and establishing a unique identity ahead of the release of her new album (专辑), Black Dog. Q: Would you describe your music as conceptual A: Conceptual is a good term. I don’t make music just for the sake of making music. My records are inspired by themes. I spend a considerable amount of time before writing the music, learning about subjects related to the theme. Then I work on the structure of the album. Ideas can change. For example, Black Dog was originally about ghosts (幽灵), but I ended up with an album about my childhood experiences, through to adulthood and parenthood, and the anxiety and fear that has been with me during that time. Q: Throughout the album, there is a sense of an observer. Is that person yourself, or another presence A: Both. There is the voice of depression and anxiety, and also this other person you know is always there. I thought of having this ominous presence (不祥之兆) around you. There is also that sense of being out in the world, as a woman, aware of my vulnerability (脆弱). For example, just going for a walk is never simple. We have to build protective instincts around ourselves. Q: When you started out, did you have any idea of the kind of artist you wanted to be A: I knew I didn’t want to fit a fixed style or be restricted by being female. I wanted to be flexible. I like to think in scale and of more than I can achieve as one person. I like artists with unique identities. Q: What would be your advice to anyone with ambitions to become a musician A: Follow your instincts. Put yourself out there without pressure to be “finished”. Absorb things, experiment, and allow yourself to follow a journey where you don’t know where you will end up. Being successful commercially takes a team and time. You have to love it and be in it for the long journey. Q: Fast forward ten years, where do you want to be A: I would love to carry on following my instincts and making albums. I would like more of a collection of TV and film scores because I enjoy writing scores and cooperative work.

A Journey to the Next Shore
In the heart of a bustling city, a young boy named Jim dreamed of becoming a great artist. From a tender age, he was fascinated by colors, shapes, and the beauty of creation. However, he often felt discouraged, as he came from a poor family without any resources to pursue his passion.
Fortunately, Jim crossed paths with Ms. Sophia, a kind and insightful art teacher. She recognized the spark of talent within him and was determined to nurture it. With her gentle guidance and encouragement, Jim began to explore the world of art, discovering new techniques and expressing his unique vision.
Ms. Sophia’s teaching style was unlike any other. She believed in encouraging her students to think creatively and push beyond their limitations. She often organized art workshops and field trips, providing Jim and his classmates with invaluable experiences and inspiration. Under her mentorship, Jim’s artistic skills flourished.
As the years passed, Jim’s confidence grew, and he began to participate in local art competitions. With each entry, he received recognition and praise for his original and captivating works. This further fueled his passion and drive to excel in the field of art.
One fateful day, Jim received the news that he had been admitted into the prestigious Royal Artistic Academy. It was a dream that came true, as the academy was known for nurturing the finest artists in the country. Jim knew that this opportunity was a testament to his hard work, talent, and the constant encouragement he received from Ms. Sophia.
Jim’s journey to success was not without challenges, but it was the unconditional support and firm belief of his teacher that drove him forward. Ms. Sophia’s encouraging teaching style not only improved Jim’s artistic abilities but also instilled in him the confidence and resilience to pursue his dreams.
Today, Jim stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when a teacher believes in a student’s potential and encourages them to reach for the stars. His story is a sound proof of the power of encouraging teaching and the impact it can have on a person’s life.
24. What was the main obstacle Jim faced in pursuing his dream of becoming an artist

B. It assuredly enhanced his determination and love for art.
C. It allowed him to meet famous artists and learn from them.
D. It provided him with a steady income to support his art career.
27. What is the passage intended to tell us

The Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor has described our times as the “Age of Authenticity,” meaning an era when people are willing to publicize their secrets and indulge (放纵) their urges, even if such a drive for personal truth crosses traditional boundaries of self-control. Once, this type of exhibitionism was the preserve of a few celebrities, but now anybody can get in on the act, such as the self-disclosure on social media.
But the “Age of Authenticity” does not seem to have made us happier. Quite the reverse. One possible explanation for this paradox is that the lowering of self-control is an understandable but significant error in our collective thinking, and it takes us in exactly the wrong direction where happiness is concerned. Understanding how this happened can help you be happier in your own life.
From a psychological perspective, two brain systems govern self-management: the behavioral activation system, which drives reward-seeking, and the behavioral inhibition system, which avoids punishment. When activation rises or inhibition falls, self-control decreases; when inhibition rises or activation falls, self-control increases.
So which combination makes us happier overall — more of the behavioral activation system and less of the behavioral inhibition system, or the other way around The answer is both. A team of eight psychologists showed this in a 2018 study on self-control in the Journal of Personality. The team fielded a series of undergraduate surveys. The researchers found that low levels of self-control were associated with the lowest levels of subjective well-being. Moving to a higher level of self-control increased the undergraduates’ happiness. Interestingly, the researchers also discovered a complete lack of self-control was associated with slightly higher momentary well-being, which might lead to negative social consequences for others.
For your own well-being, and everyone’s, increasing self-control might be much better than lowering it. If you want to increase your self-control, be aware of the forces around you that may lower the activity of the inhibition system in your brain and thus push you toward lower self-control, such as anonymity (匿名), and social power. If you’re seeking to boost your self-control, shun any social media forum where your identity is hidden. If you possess an ability to publish material that many other people will read, see, or hear, you should ask yourself whether your desire to attract and retain an audience is leading you to abandon your privacy.
Aristotle once wrote that “virtues are formed in a man by his doing the actions.” One important choice we have is to behave with either controlled grace or uncontrolled entitlement. Neither option is in reality more authentic than the other because, in becoming who we are through our choices, both paths are equally authentic; both embody who we’ve chosen to be as people. But only one path, that of controlled grace, leads to greater happiness for one and all.
28. “Age of Authenticity” means ______.
A. a period when people exercise less self-control
B. an era characterized by a return to traditional values
C. a time when privacy of personal truth is encouraged
D. an age where crossing traditional boundaries are urged
29. From the passage, we learn that ______.
A. enhancing inhibition may improve long-term well-being
B. increased activation leads to higher momentary happiness
C. activation promotes reward-seeking by avoiding punishment
D. lowering self-management triggers negative social consequences
30. People can improve self-control by ______.
A. maintaining privacy by reducing online presence
B. employing social power to gain popularity online
C. embracing anonymity when browsing public forums
D. taking responsibility for what they post on social media
D
I never planned to fake my data. My project involved interviewing the customers who were visiting a games shop in central London, then measuring the distance they had travelled. Arriving at the location with a clipboard, I realized that I didn’t have the nerve. I went home and began to dream up some realistic-seeming numbers. I am a little ashamed of myself. However, I was about 14 years old at the time. I am confident that the scientific record has not been corrupted by my sins.
I wish I could say that only school children fake data, but the evidence suggests otherwise. Stuart Ritchie’s book Science Fictions argues that “fraud in science is not the rare scenario that we desperately hope it to be”.
This matters. Fraudulent research wastes the time of scientists who try to build on it, as well as the money of funding agencies that support it. It undermines the reputation of good science. Above all, if the insights produced by good science make the world better, then false beliefs produced by fraudulent science make the world worse.
Consider the desperate search for treatments for the flu. Medical researchers have struggled to test out treatments from vitamin D to the deworming (除虫) drug ivermectin, but the results have often been small or flawed studies. However, an influential working paper, published late last year, described a large trial with very positive results for ivermectin. It gave a lot of people hope and inspired the use of ivermectin around the world, although the European Medicines Agency and the US Food and Drug Administration advise against ivermectin’s use to treat the disease.
The research paper was withdrawn on July 14, after several researchers discovered anomalies (反常现象) in the underlying data. Some patients appeared to have died before the study even began, while other patient records seemed to be duplicates. There may be an innocent explanation for this but it certainly raises questions.
On August 17, there was an unsettling development in a quite different field, behavioral science. Data detectives Uri Simonsohn, Joe Simmons, Leif Nelson and anonymous co-authors published a forensic analysis of a well-known experiment about dishonesty. The experiment, published in 2012, was based on data from a motor insurer in which customers had supplied information about mileage along with a declaration that the information was true. Some signed the declaration at the top of the document, while others signed at the bottom — and those who signed at the top were more likely to tell the truth.
It’s an intuitive and influential discovery. The only problem with this, according to Simonsohn and his colleagues, is that it is apparently based on faked data. “There is very strong evidence that the data were fabricated,” they conclude. Several of the authors of the original article have published statements agreeing. What remains to be seen is who or what was behind the suspected fabrication. Dan Ariely, the most famous of the authors of the original study, was the one who brought the data to the collaboration. He told me in an email that “at no point did I knowingly use unreliable, inaccurate, or manipulated data in our research”, expressing regret that he did not sufficiently check the data that were supplied to him by the insurance company.
Both episodes are disheartening: science is hard enough when everyone involved is acting in good faith. Scientists need to get back the traditional values of the field, which include the open sharing of scientific ideas and data, and rigorous scrutiny of those ideas.
31. Why did the author fake his data in the school project
A. Because he wanted to impress his teacher.
B. Because he lacked the tools to collect real data.
C. Because he was afraid of interacting with the customers.
D. Because he was too young to understand the impact of his actions.
32. Which of the following is NOT a consequence of faking data as described in the passage
A. The waste of time and funding. B. The misuse of the research facilities.
C. The corruption of the integrity of science. D. The promotion of false beliefs that harm society.
33. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. The ivermectin study’s flaws were discovered by health authorities.
B. The issue of faking data is more widespread in the medical field.
C. The behavioral study’s data was initially believed to be reliable.
D. The intention of the insurance company remains to be known.
34. The following part of the passage will most likely discuss ________.
A. reasons for data fabrication
B. effects of fraud on scientific progress
C. case studies of scientific fraud in various fields
D. measures to preserve the traditional values of science
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
Get Moving When a Storm Threatens
When a storm is forecast to impact your area, take action immediately to be ready. Ideally, longer-term preparedness actions such as having disaster supplies and an evacuation plan will have already been done before hurricane season, when the stores are stocked and time is on your side. ____35____
Protect your home. While longer-term home improvement needs to be done well ahead of time, when a storm threatens there are short-term actions to help protect your property. Board up windows, secure loose outdoor items, and secure all exterior doors. ____36____ If you are evacuating, unplug electrical equipment such as radios, televisions and small appliances (freezers and refrigerators also need to be unplugged if there is a risk of flooding). If you are instructed to do so, shut off water, gas and electricity before leaving.
Determine sheltering options and consider your pets. ____37____ If you have pets, find a place where they can stay — most public shelters only allow service animals. In general, have multiple sheltering options, including distant ones such as a friend’s home outside of the impact area, or a motel. Depending on the circumstances, your home may need to be your shelter — make sure it is prepared and that you know the safest places inside.
Ready your go-bag. Have a go bag ready to take things with you if you need to leave in a hurry. In addition to basic survival needs, don’t forget other supplies such as chargers and hygiene products. ____38____ While preparing these basic needs, don’t forget to keep your phone charged. Your go-bag should also contain important personal and property documents, including your written communication plan.
Help your neighbors, especially the elderly and other vulnerable people. Many people rely on their neighbors before and after a disaster, and there are many ways you can help them. Help them prepare for a storm, and help them evacuate if needed. ____39____
Follow evacuation orders if given. Always follow evacuation orders from local authorities — don’t wait for a hurricane to intensify before deciding to follow the order. You want to leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather.
A. Plan to have enough for at least three days.
B. When a storm threatens, there’s a lot more to do.
C. Take action today to be better prepared for when the worst happens.
D. Move your vehicle to a safe location if you’re not using it to evacuate.
E. Check with local officials to find out what shelter spaces are available.
F. Unplug electrical equipment and check to see if any neighbors need a ride.
G. Share the latest forecast information with them so that they know what to expect.

The Reason Why You Should Use Simple Dialogue Tags
During a judging period for a recent short story contest, I started thinking a lot about dialogue tags. Because in many submissions, characters didn’t “say” a thing. They shouted, they inquired, they assumed. Some characters screamed while others murmured. But no one “said” anything. And I started wondering why.
Why do we tell beginner writers to avoid creative dialogue tags in the first place Why do we insist that characters should stick to “said,” “asked,” and the occasional “sighed ” And, if the advice is so oft-repeated, why are writers still unable to resist the siren call of weep, scream, snap, or laugh
The more I thought about it, the more I understood the temptation. We’re always encouraged to use strong, actionable verbs in our prose. Why walk when you can skip or wander Why cry when you can sob or weep Why wouldn’t we reach for exciting verbs instead of mild-boring dull-blah said
The problem, I think, is that every jewel needs a setting to become something more than the sum of its parts. Without something to provide structure, a collection of the world’s most glorious diamonds would still only amount to a heap of rocks.
And a dialogue tag should never, ever be the diamond in any given sentence.
Dialogue is your diamond, friends. When we read your work, your dialogue should be so bright, so sparkling, so lifelike, so wonderfully realistic that our brains “hear” each line instead of merely reading it. We don’t need to be told a character is shouting — we can sense it in the way they spit out words, clench fists, or storm from the room.
A dialogue tag is a mere signpost along the narrative journey, gently indicating who said what. It’s part of a story’s experience, but it’s not part of the story itself, nor should it be treated as such. Dialogue tags are similar to lighting in a Broadway play: without it, the audience would have no idea what was going on, but it usually strives to shine without calling too much attention to itself.

43. Version 1: Shaping compelling characters is key to writing a good story. When characters are well-developed, with distinct personalities, motivations, and flaws, they feel real and relatable to readers. Their decisions and growth drive the plot, allowing readers to become emotionally invested in their journeys, which makes the story more engaging.
Version 2: Interacting with people from different backgrounds can be helpful. It offers fresh viewpoints and ideas. Listening to their stories and understanding their perspectives allows us to incorporate diverse themes into our writing. This broadens our storytelling scope and makes the work more inclusive and engaging.

It’s a great honor to speak at our upcoming tree-planting event
Today, we gather with a mission to combat sand and dust storms while promoting greenery. This initiative goes beyond simply planting trees; it’s about planting hope. It’s about showing our commitment to a sustainable future and our responsibility to the planet. As desertification worsens, each tree we plant represents our strength and resilience.
I encourage all international students to participate with enthusiasm. Let’s prepare by researching tree planting techniques and following our teachers’ guidance to ensure we do it right. Additionally, we should seize this chance to raise awareness and educate our peers about environmental conservation.
Together our collective efforts can make a meaningful impact, one tree at a time. (Word Count: 121)
