You either have it, or you don’t—a sense of direction. But why is it that some people would find their way across the desert without a map, but others can 1 themselves in the next street
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of 2 , but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory (理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked 3 at developing it. Research at the University of Liverpool supports this idea and suggests that 4 we don’t use it, we will lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the 5 to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, the research director of this project. “However, if they are not 6 out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skill.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes (强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to 7 their sense of direction. He makes the following 8 :
If you are using a map, turn it to the way you are 9 .
If you leave your bike in a(n) 10 place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree—something easy to recognize (辨认). 11 the landmark (地标) on the route as you go away from your bike. When you 12 , go back along the same route.
The simple 13 of finding your direction is by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps 14 you know how far you have gone and note some landmarks such as tall buildings or hills, which can help to find out 15 you are.
Now you will never get lost again.

Summer holidays are a great time for students of all ages to learn while they are relaxing themselves. What should parents plan for their children’s holidays
① Set some time for your children to read each day and improve their reading ability—15 to 30 minutes each day is proper. During the summer holidays, children have more time to read for fun. What’s more, parents’ reading activities should include taking the children to the public library and encouraging them to join a reading group to share their ideas.

As a child, I spent each Thanksgiving with my large family at my grandparents’ house in Maryland, the US. It’s a cabin (小木屋) on the side of a hill, deep in the forest, above a small and grassy field. For me, that cabin meant Thanksgiving.
Our first greeting was the excited barking of Grandma’s dog, Jesse. He met us at our car and jumped up at us as we carried our bags into the house. Inside were my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Aunt Sue touched my face and told me how big I’d gotten. Grandpa gave me a strong handshake and shouted, “What do you say, Cal !”, which is the old man’s English for “Hello, Calvin!”.
The next day, by the time I woke up, Grandma and Mom had already begun cooking. Throughout the day we all helped out. The cabin was small, so we had to creatively move the furniture to make room for everyone to sit at the table together.
Dinner was finally served at about 4 p.m. Before we ate, Grandma asked each person to say at least one thing that he or she was thankful for. I said, “I’m thankful for my parents, my grandma and the turkey” I was too hungry to think of anything better. Once everyone finished speaking, we dug in. It was all delicious food. Even better were the homemade apple and pumpkin pies.
After dinner, we took a long walk through the woods around the cabin. Under the late-autumn stars, we made a campfire in the field and told stories. I looked up at the hill in the moonlight, and one word appeared in my mind: Thanks.
