Best things to do in Feldkirch
Cool architecture — Montforthaus Feldkirch
If you’re an architecture fan, you will love Vorarlberg and especially the Montforthaus in Feldkirch. On the edge of the town and under the watchful gaze of the Schattenburg Castle lies the Montforthaus with its beautiful rounded front walls. It is a fantastic building that really integrates well with its medieval (中世纪的) surroundings thanks to the large glass front.
Climb to the top — Schattenburg Castle and Museum

Where to eat in Feldkirch
Lunch at La Bottega del Gusto
Located in the heart of the old town is a little slice of Italian heaven. The owner and chef Nico is a man of few words and there is no set menu here. The menu is simple with a few suggestions — everything we tasted here was delicious. For ?9.95 for 2 courses including a glass of wine, this is a cracking bargain.
Dinner at Restaurant Kantine

Verena Mohaupt and a handful of colleagues were trapped on floating sea ice while the bear gazed at them, smelling the air — a dangerous sign. As a colleague fired into the sky as a warning shot, Mohaupt radioed their research ship a few kilometers away, whose helicopter luckily arrived quickly and Mohaupt didn’t have to use the gun that was hanging over her shoulder.
Keeping a lookout for bears was a regular duty for Mohaupt, the logistics coordinator (后勤协调员) for a year- long mission known as MOSAiC — the largest Arctic research exploration in history. The project, consisting of roughly 300 people, including scientists and coordinators, has collected massive measurements that will help better forecast how warming will transform the globe in the coming decades. For months, the exploration operated in constant darkness while polar bears wandered nearby, storms rocked the ship and the ice shifted and cracked.
Tasked with the security of the mission, Mohaupt designed an extensive training course for the participants in which they learnt how to avoid the danger, like storm- rocking and ice- cracking. They jumped into a Norwegian channel in their survival suits and climbed out of the freezing waters using only their ice picks. They learnt how to escape from a crashed helicopter. And they discussed the psychological effects of being far from home. Mohaupt brought knitting equipment, a yoga mat and an accordion for her own mental health — although having been prepared for the isolation.
Mohaupt didn’t expect a career in polar regions. However, all the scientists approved that without her, the project could not have achieved so much. “She was there to make sure that we were protected,” said one of them. “Mohaupt is certainly the champion in the field.”
4. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By making a list of facts. B. By presenting arguments.
C. By describing a scene. D. By making a comparison.
5. What do we know about MOSAiC?
A. It is the largest ever research exploration. B. It is made up of about 300 scientists.
C. Its working conditions are quite tough. D. Its duty is to keep a lookout for bears.
6. Which of the following best describes Mohaupt?
A. Ambitious and courageous. B. Passionate and humorous.
C. Honest and generous. D. Professional and responsible.
7. What is the attitude of the scientist towards Mohaupt?
A. Tolerant. B. Appreciative. C. Sympathetic. D. Envious.

One day, a mime (哑巴) is visiting the zoo and tries to earn some money as a street performer. As soon as he starts to draw a crowd, a zookeeper pulls him into his office. The zookeeper explains that the zoo’s most popular attraction, a gorilla, has died suddenly and the keeper fears that attendance at the zoo will fall off. He offers the mime a job to dress up as the gorilla, so the mime accepts.
The next morning the mime puts on the gorilla suit and enters the cage before the crowd comes. He soon discovers he can sleep, play and make fun of people and he draws bigger crowds than he ever did as a mime — he feels the job funny.
However, with days going by, he begins to notice that the people are paying more attention to the lion in the cage next to his. Wanting to win back his audience, he climbs to the top of his cage, crawls across a partition (隔墙), and dangles (摇晃地悬挂着) from the top to the lion’s cage first. The lion gets angry at this. The scene is a fuel to the crowd.
At the end of the day he is given a raise for being such a good attraction — well, this continues for some time. The crowds grow larger, and the mime’s pay keeps going up.
Then one day when he is hanging over the lion he slides and falls. The mime is terrified. He starts screaming “Help me!”, but the lion is quick. The mime soon finds himself flat on his back looking up at the angry lion and the lion says, “Shut up you fool! Do you want to get us both fired?”
8. Why does the mime accepts the zookeeper’s offer?
A. Because he wants to make some money. B. Because the zoo is popular with people.
C. Because he doesn’t like being a mime. D. Because he likes performing at the zoo.
9. How does the mime first find the job dressing up as the gorilla?
A. Hard and tiring. B. Dangerous but exciting.
C. Boring but well-paid. D. Easy and funny.
10. The underlined words “a fuel” in paragraph 3 can be replaced by __________.
A. frightening B. disappointing C. familiar D. exciting
11. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The lion fell onto the ground. B. The mime was bitten by the lion.
C. The lion was played by a person. D. The mime was fired by the zoo.
D
In the 21st century, we’ve seen some new technologies. Innovations really come to our homes. One example is the electric vehicle (EV), which is considered a promising solution for future green transportation. While the battery charging time of EVs is getting better every year, many people still prefer petrol vehicles, mostly because they don’t want to spend time waiting until the batteries are fully charged.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has decided to handle that problem by burying electrified wire coils (线圈) that create a magnetic field (磁场) along the road surface. In order to use the roads, cars will be fitted with a receiver coil to pick up the charge as they go along, and become magnetized, drawing electricity from the coils themselves. Indiana could be the first state in the U.S. to have a wireless charging road that tops up electric vehicles as people drive along it.
Expected to take three phases, the work will begin in late summer, according to a statement from the contracted German firm in charge of designing and building the road, Magment. “This project is a real step forward towards the future of dynamic wireless charging,” said Mauricio Esguerra, CEO of Magment. “And that will undoubtedly set the standard for affordable, sustainable, and efficient transportation electrification.” It’s the first such electrified charging road in the U.S., and researchers in this field estimate that it would be 5-10 years before such technology would be available.
In fact, Sweden already had electric rails on some highways that allow the largest vehicles on the highway to charge by way of an electric arm on their undercarriages (底盘) that draws power from the rails. Volkswagen has rolled out its prototype (原型) of a charging road between the Italian cities of Brescia and Milan. Siemens is trying to build a structure of cables and wires that is similar to electric rails above a three-mile stretch of road outside Frankfurt that will allow cars to charge along it. It won’t be long before one of these projects is widely carried out, and motoring is once again changed forever.
12. What’s the major limiting factor behind the purchase of an EV?
A. Limited charging stations. B. Poor driving experiences.
C. Battery charging issues. D. The high price.
13. What do we know about the road project in Indiana?
A. It can help reduce transportation fees. B. In has received recognition from drivers.
C. It aims to make EVs get charged in motion. D. It provides more charging stations for EVs.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The advantages of charging roads. B. The potential market for electric rails.
C. The latest models of electric vehicles. D. The achievements related to charging roads.
15. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To announce the development of INDOT. B. To introduce a technological invention.
C. To call on people to buy EVs. D. To appeal for green transportation.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Humans have a need to share their beliefs and values with other people. ___16___ This has a solid logic: Sharing emotions and opinions can lead to imitation (模仿), which can in turn create unity and enhance relationships.
Besides creating a bond, another reason you might want someone to model themselves on your feelings is to get them to alter their views. ___17___ The choice will depend on the other person’s situation. If he/ she already agrees with you, then your negativity can raise the intensity of his/ her views.
___18___ Sometimes, people you are talking to don’t already think the way you do. They will simply judge your statement to be hyperbolic (浮夸的) and biased. And you won’t get them to imitate you at all. To an even greater degree, if they disagree with you, what you say will harden their values against yours. ___19___ When people are offended over the opinions they hold, they are much more likely to dig into their position against that of the speaker.
Imagine a person came to your house with a beautiful bunch of flowers. But when you opened the door, he/ she hit you with the flowers. ___20___
So, if you want to be more persuasive, consider the specific situations and share them more positively — in other words, turn your beliefs and values into a gift, rather than a weapon.
A. One size, however, won’t fit for all.
B. This is the so- called backfire effect.
C. All you would want is to get the person out of the way.
D. When you feel strongly about something, it’s hard not to talk about it.
E. This is essentially the result of using your flowers negatively as weapons.
F. To achieve the goal, you can outline your views either positively or negatively.
G. Positive emotions may be better at leading to imitation than negative emotions.

Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry frown (皱眉) on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is silly!”
“I know, Devi,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”
Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Devi had been to was the duck pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local pool.
The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Devi confidently slid into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi threw her arm toward the side of the pool and caught the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself anxiously.
On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench (长凳), frozen with fear. She put a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Devi was upset. “Honey, I’ve signed you up for Angela’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she comforted Devi, showing photos of Angela with her prize—winning students.

【47题答案】
Then came the time for Devi to take her first lesson. She dragged her feet to the side of the pool and sat down, in doubt whether lessons would be helpful. Scanning around, Devi spotted her instructor across the pool, together with the little kids who jumped into the water like fish leaping into the ocean. She watched in amazement. Envious as Devi was, a flush of embarrassment soon crept to her cheeks when a little girl passed by, asking her not to be scared. How embarrassing! She hung her head. (80 words)
Soon Angela came over to where Devi sat and introduced herself. Devi was astonished to be made aware that Angela had never learned swimming until she was 20. Greatly inspired, Devi now regained hope. She entered the pool a second time in the company of Angela, several cheerful kids floating near to cheer her on. Devi began to feel more at ease, her movement less stiff and her breath more even. With a grateful heart, Devi realized that she might not be a fearless swimmer, but she would sure/surely have fun trying. (81 words)
