Two years ago, artist Dave Clark exhibited his artwork at the local Mantel Gallery — a small, repurposed Little Free Library that does double duty: When it’s not filled with books, it shows the works of artists like Clark.
Clark was struck by the idea. “That’s cool,” Clark said. While his neighborhood had many artists, he noted, it did not have any galleries. So he designed and built a micro-gallery (微型画廊) with his wife. He set it up in the front yard of their house and named it Gallery 17.
Later, the couple organized an exhibition for local artist Cody Lusby. About 40 people showed up. Soon, others began asking Clark to build micro-galleries for them. And then, artists from around Los Angeles and as far away as Ecuador began asking to show their works. At a time of falling support for public arts and artists, these micro-galleries have created neighborhood art areas.
After retiring in 2016, Clark founded an art center connecting artists. He had long grown tired of the traditional “pay to play” process. Art galleries chose only a select few to be shown while artists were spending several hundred dollars a year getting in various places just for exposure (曝光). At this art center, Clark charges $450 for the materials, building and set-up. The artists receive 100% of the profits (收益) for any work sold.
Some artists who’ve never shown their works ask to exhibit their work. Recently one of Clark’s neighbors asked to exhibit his partner’s father’s work. “He’s an artist in his 80s. For artists like him, this is such a cool, fun thing. It represents their first individual show. And that’s a proud achievement,” Clark said.
“It’s important that art become a part of everyday life,” said Linda Grimes, the director of a local art area. “Not everybody is welcome to go into an art gallery or a museum. Artists of local art areas started painting those traffic signal boxes so that people could see art and appreciate it outside, on the street every day. And then they painted large ones.”
4. What inspired Clark to set up Gallery 17
A. Some local artists’ invitation. B. A library designer’s suggestion.
C. His experience with Mantel Gallery. D. His intention to start a new business.
5. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The great support from the neighbours.
B. The growing interest in micro-galleries.
C. The major benefit of running local galleries.
D. The need for cooperation in artistic creation.
6. How can Clark’s art center benefit artists
A By encouraging charity events. B. By providing low-cost training.
C. By sharing information on art orders. D. By offering a cost-effective platform.
7. What do Linda’s words suggest about local art areas
A. They help to broaden artists’ themes.
B. They allow the public to enjoy art easily.
C. They inspire people to create their own art.
D. They fail to gain popularity like art galleries.

Science and social studies textbooks are often difficult for first- and second-grade students. So traditional teaching methods in North Carolina encourage teachers to remove English-learning students from those content classes to focus on their language skills instead. But a new study finds that it is not really like this.
By creating a 10-week literacy (读写能力) program, which kept English learners in science and social studies classes, researchers saw improvements in their ability to use new vocabulary and write articles. The study highlights the importance of introducing English learners to subject-based content, said Jackie Relyea, assistant professor of literacy education at North Carolina State University.
The literacy program observed students in 30 primary schools in North Carolina. The researchers provide informational texts for those students. They applied methods like read-alouds, group research and concept mapping (概念图) to build students’ vocabulary and understanding of difficult topics. Concept mapping refers to using drawings or similar aids to show connections between ideas.
Clearly, the study found that English learners had similar levels of improvement in science and social studies as their classmates skilled in English. Besides, the program did not lead to negative results elsewhere, which supports the idea that English-learning students can attend more advanced classes without falling behind. This further suggests that content-rich literacy instruction may help narrow the achievement gap when it comes to English learning.
“One thing we noticed is the importance of using well-organized texts that cover the same topic. In more traditional literacy instruction, topics usually changed quickly and there wasn’t always a clear connection that the students could hold on to. By focusing on similar subjects for longer, kids can dig deeper and develop more in-depth knowledge. It also helps them become experts in the subject matter, which greatly improves their vocabulary and understanding skills,” Relyea said.
The study challenges common beliefs about English learners, showing they can deal with difficult subjects even with limited English skills. Relyea suggested that more research on adding small-group lessons could make the program even more effective.
8. What does the new study focus on
A. Mistakes in traditional teaching. B. English learners’ subject access.
C. Students’ ways to learn vocabulary. D. The role of language skills in writing.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the literacy program
A. Its main challenges. B. Its target audiences.
C. Its educational goals. D. Its teaching strategies.
10. Which is the key finding about English learners in the program
A. They experienced equal progress.
B. They required extra help to keep up.
C. They showed curiosity about various topics.
D. They performed poorly in advanced courses.
11. What matters for literacy instruction according to Relyea
A. Using simple texts in early classes.
B. Changing between a variety of themes.
C. Allowing students time for self-learning.
D. Providing similar topic learning materials.
D
Polar bears have a thick layer (层) of fat below two layers of fur that help hold their body heat. These layers keep them so warm that adult bears can quickly overheat when they run. However, ice does not build up on the fur, despite the bears spending nearly all of their time in and around freezing cold water. This unique feature has caught the attention of scientists, who are eager to understand its secrets.
To learn more about it, a research team collected hair from six polar bears in the wild. They tested how strongly ice stuck to the fur. Next, they checked if water rolled off the fur before turning into ice. They then compared the performance of polar bear hair with human hair and two human-made ski skins.
“The grease (油脂) quickly jumped out as being the key factor causing this ice-preventing effect, as we discovered the ice-holding ability was obviously altered when the hair was washed,” said Julian Carolan, a study co-author. “Unwashed, greasy hair made it much harder for ice to hold on to. In contrast, when the polar bear hair was washed and the grease was largely removed, it performed similarly to human hair, to which ice attaches readily.”
This grease also helps explain more about the hunting strategies of polar bears. Polar bears use still hunting, where they lay completely still next to a breathing hole in the ice for underwater animals. “Sometimes, in still hunting, the polar bear quietly moves into the water using its back feet to follow its food. The less the ice sticks to them, the less noise is produced and the faster and quieter the movement,” said Bodil Holst, an experimental physicist at the University of Bergen in Norway.
In addition to learning more about these masters of adaptation, the study can help work out new solutions that keep away ice, leading to healthier and stronger fabrics (织物), skis, snowboards, and more. The natural fatty coatings found in bears are expected to inform the development of more sustainable coatings, which could serve as replacements for harmful long-lasting chemicals like PFAS, which have been commonly used in ice-preventing applications.
12. What about polar bears has drawn scientists’ interest
A. Their unique ability to stay ice-free. B. Their usual presence in freezing water.
C. Their fear of overheating during activity. D. Their power to survive in tough conditions.
13. What does the underlined word “altered” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Covered. B. Weakened. C. Changed. D. Separated.
14. How does the grease benefit polar bears according to Bodil Holst
A. It prevents injury risks. B. It tricks their target animals.
C. It is helpful for storing energy. D. It enables them to hunt more easily.
15. What possible progress can polar bears’ fatty coatings inspire
A. Creating safer ice protection materials. B. Improving the survival skills of wildlife.
C. Designing products with fewer coatings. D. Making sports equipment work smoothly.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11.
