Clifton College’s The English Experience
Location: Bristol Ages: 12 to 17
Fees (费用): 2 Weeks: 2740; 3 Weeks: 4110; 4 Weeks: 5480
Start Dates: 9, 16, 23, 30 July & 6, 13 August 2023
The English Experience challenges students while building their confidence in English and many other skills that are useful inside and outside the classroom. At the beginning of each week, students are put into small groups and given a complex problem to work through to find a solution and present it in their chosen way. Teachers are there to guide the students, which is why class sizes are 12 at most.
In the afternoons, students choose an elective (选修科目) to follow for 6 hours per week. These include such courses as news reporting, presentation skills, a Mini UN, and creative writing. Extra electives such as professional golf, tennis, and football coaching, as well as horse riding and exam preparation, lead to an additional cost.
Students go on two full-day excursions (短途旅行) per week. Mid-week excursions are planned around that week’s topic, so on the environmental week we go to a local environmental activity centre, while the theatre week involves a trip to a West End show with a drama workshop. Saturday excursions are more relaxed but still engaging, and include set time for shopping. Sunday excursions are shorter but also include an entrance to a local attraction.

I frowned at myself in the dressing-room mirror. I was wearing white tights, a white leotard, and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes in my dance school's Winter Wonderland show.
“Grandma, I really don't feel like being in the show,” I said. Grandma Lani looked up from what she was sewing. “Why, mo'opuna ” Mo'opuna means “grandchild” in Hawaiian. Grandma Lani has always lived in Hawai'i. “You love to dance.” I used to love to dance. Then Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Christine Abrams. Christine got to wear a blue leotard and a feathery skirt that drifted out like a cloud every time she twirled. And she got to do a dance onstage all by herself. The snowflakes just had to run and spin to look like a snowstorm. I sighed. “I don't like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn't there. There are so many of us.” “I would notice. So would your parents.”
As Christine walked toward us, Grandma paused and smiled at her. “What a beautiful costume!” Christine glided away, her skirt waving behind her. I hung my head. Grandma took my hand. “What's bothering my Avery ” “And you won't be able to tell me apart from the other snowflakes,” I whispered.
Grandma was about to speak. Then something outside the window caught her eye. She grabbed my hand and my coat and pulled me out of the dressing room and through the doors to the outside. It was snowing. Grandma held her breath and I suddenly thought of something. “Grandma, have you ever seen snow before ” “No, mo'opuna. In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains.”
I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently. Like it was new. I saw snowflakes twisting through the air in different directions, sparkling and shining at us. So many snowflakes coming together to create something magical. “Aloha,” Grandma whispered to the sky. Aloha can mean many things, including “love,” “hello,” and “good-bye.” “I don't know when I'll see something like that again.” “I do,” I said. I took Grandma Lani's hand and pulled her back inside.
When the stage lights came up and the music started, I spun and ran with all of the other snowflakes. I didn't care if Grandma Lani could see me. I was helping her see a snowstorm.
4.What is the part the granddaughter played in the dance
A.The Snow Queen. B.A snowflake.
C.A snowstorm. D.A granddaughter.
5.What can we learn from the text
A.She lived with her parents and grandma. B.Grandma would like to see snow again.
C.It doesn't snow at all where Grandma lived. D.Her parents didn't come to the show.
6.Why did the granddaughter feel like being in the show at last
A.She loved to dance very much. B.She became more important in it.
C.She intended to show her talent. D.She meant to please her grandma.
7.Which of the following words best describes the granddaughter
A.Selfish. B.Childish. C.Caring. D.Emotional.
C
Recent headlines have raised concerns about microplastics in our bodies and the harm they may be doing. “The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat — it’s in it,” said Richard Thompson, a marine biologist at the University of Plymouth.
Microplastics mostly come from larger plastics, which degrade (降解) with use or when they aren’t disposed of properly. These microplastics end up in our air, soil, water and food. The wear and tear on our car tires, for example, produces particles that pollute the air and water. Humans breathe in these particles — and harmful chemicals within them.
Microplastics have been found in human stool (粪便) and urine. Some studies have suggested that the plastic not excreted in waste appears to pass out of the gut and into the blood, and from there can migrate to other organs like the liver and brain. Animal studies indicate that microplastics can also affect lung and gut functioning and may increase the risk for lung and colon cancer.
One of the most effective steps might simply be not drinking from plastic water bottles, especially if they’ve been sitting out in the sun. Another is to avoid heating food in plastic containers. Experts recommended switching to glass or steel containers for food storage. Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables can help, too. Regularly vacuuming your house and using an air purifier can reduce the amount of microplastics.
These measures have limitations, however. Plastic is widespread and often the most affordable option. “It shouldn’t all be on the consumer to have to make those choices,” said Christy Tyler, a professor of environmental science at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Experts, including Tyler, said governments would have to regulate and reduce nonessential plastics to stop that accumulation. Some already have. The United States and Europe banned the use of microbeads (微珠) in makeup, for example, and several U.S. states are phasing out Styrofoam in food packaging. And 175 countries have agreed to create a United Nations treaty to end plastic pollution. Compared to 20 years ago, Dr. Thompson said, there’s now “a public appetite” for change.
8.What can we learn about microplastics
A.They produce particles into the air. B.They are from food and drinks.
C.They can be degraded properly. D.They may cause health problems.
9.Which of the following best explains “excreted” underlined in paragraph 3
A.added B.released C.created D.controlled
10.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Approaches to keeping healthy. B.Effective steps for heating food.
C.Measures for using plastic device. D.Ways of avoiding microplastics.
11.What can be inferred from Christy Tyler’s words
A.Consumers are blamed for spreading plastics.
B.Governments should fine people for using plastics.
C.Governments are responsible for reducing plastics.
D.Consumers need to pay attention to plastic pollution.

When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone“has an accent”is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect, too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not ” (meaning “Have you eaten ”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects—for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
12.What does the author think of his/her friends’ response in Paragraph 1
A.It reflects their self confidence. B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the real meaning of accents. D.It shows that they are good learners.
13.Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English
A.To show different languages in Singapore. B.To correct a grammatical mistake.
C.To show a traditional approach. D.To justify the use of dialects.
14.What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph
A.Appreciate the value of accents and dialects. B.Travel all over the world.
C.Look for accents in China. D.Distinguish our local languages from others’.
15.What is the author’s attitude towards accent
A.Negative. B.Favourable. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.

“Judy, hurry up! Let’s go to the beach!” That was a familiar morning call from my older brother, Sirin. Hearing that, I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey. Raised by our grandparents in Savanna, we experienced our happiest moments there. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees, crystal-like ocean, and clear blue sky, Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature’s wonders. When we grew tired, leisurely walking on the soft, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of peaceful joy. The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood with us.
Three years later, we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents. Occupied with our study, we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient. Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. In addition to seafood, we could order anything our hearts desired, no matter how late it was. What we loved most was the convenience of not needing to wash the dishes after eating, as they were all disposable, designed for single use.
However, deep within us, we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life. We were told by our grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So, when the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived this year, we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise. After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles, we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our cherished memories.

46.Dear fellow students,
As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Sports play a significant role in our daily lives, bringing us numerous benefits.
First and foremost, regular exercise, like jogging, strengthens our hearts and lungs, and builds muscle and bone strength. Moreover, sports also relieve stress. Whether playing basketball with friends or practicing yoga alone, we can relax and stay positive. Most importantly, sports teach us perseverance and teamwork, helping us grow.
In conclusion, sports are an essential part of our lives. Let’s actively participate in sports and embrace a healthier and more fulfilling life.
47.Paragraph 1:
However, what we saw shocked us. Plastic bags and single-use containers littered the beaches, and we could hardly see any undersea creature in the once crystal-clear sea. To make matters worse, the water was dark and difficult to see through. Because of the unpleasant smell, we had to cover our noses. With tears blurring our vision, we desperately wondered what had happened to our beloved village. Looking at our anxious faces, Grandfather sighed with his head bowed. It was those visitors who did help us earn more money, but they also brought massive amounts of rubbish, which caused severe pollution and changed our beautiful village completely. While telling us about the changes, Grandfather gazed at the sea, his eyes filled with disappointment and helplessness.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing Grandfather’s words, we couldn’t wait to do something to tackle the pollution. Without hesitation, Sirin and I took off our shoes and walked near the sea to collect the rubbish with our bare hands. Seeing what we were doing, our family and some villagers joined us in our efforts. Some villagers fetched helpful tools, like sticks and nets, which were quite useful in catching the waste. I also pulled out my mobile phone and took photos of the rubbish floating on the surface of the sea. By posting those images on social media, I hoped more people could be aware of the pollution and lend a helping hand too. Much to our relief, our joint efforts made a difference. The seaside became clean once more, and the breeze from the sea smelled fresh and sweet again.
