【原文】M: Hello, everyone. I’ve come to talk to you today about a really successful product: coffee! As some stories say, coffee was first consumed in Ethiopia, in Africa, dating back to the fifteenth century. However, a popular tale identifies the ninth century as when coffee was originally consumed as a drink. By the seventeenth century, it was enjoyed worldwide. The tale goes that an Ethiopian farmer, Kaldi, spotted that his goats became energetic and didn’t sleep once they’d consumed the red, coffee beans. Then he took some of the beans with him. In those days, there was no professional chefs, so instead he gave them to a local leader, who initially rejected them and threw them onto a fire. The smell of the roasting beans changed his mind, leading him to create a tasty hot drink. Coffee quickly spread to Yemen in southern Arabia. Not only was it enjoyed in people’s homes, but also in the world’s earliest coffee shops. As the popularity grew in Europe, coffee shops appeared there too and became centers of social activity. Later, the British took coffee to North America.

Frightened, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would have a better education here, so I enrolled (登记) in the local high school in my new town.
I was afraid of how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector (投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular (惯常的) process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsh (刺耳的) one, she said,“That is the lunch bell, young man.“
I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria (自助食堂). I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I saw my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t so bad.
24.Why did the author enroll in an American high school
A.Because his mother had worked in it for 3 years.
B.Because his father thought little of Indian schools.

D.Because he had been anxious to leave his homeland.
25.What can we learn about the author’s first day of school
A.He missed his lunch because he was lost.
B.He had no choice but to seat in a fixed seat.
C.His classmates and teachers were all unfriendly.
D.He felt differences between the two education systems.
26.What does the underlined word “barrier” probably mean

My father was attached to gardening by birth. One of my earliest memories is following Dad barefoot around in the garden with both hands blackened from digging in the soil. The garden was a wonderland full of possibilities.
As Dad grew older, he still loved gardening. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still planted all sorts of plants. Sometimes, I would come over to visit, and we would walk together in the garden. But then, something changed. Like the weeds that took over his garden, the cancer grew rapidly in Dad, and the doctor gave up. I stayed with Dad twenty-four hours a day and I found myself in all kinds of uncomfortable situations with Dad until I promised to care for the garden.
Though I had heard the words of the doctor, what really made me believe that Dad was dying was the state of his garden. That year, he only planted tomatoes. Too tired to weed them, he simply tied them with strong strings to the fence and let them be. It made me sad to see them ignored, so I would come over and water them once in a while, and remove the weeds. I still remember the day I picked the last tomato from the vine (藤).That day was one of the saddest I had ever experienced in my life.
Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden. I decided I would start out with just a few tomatoes. That morning when I moved to the garden, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, standing barefoot in the soil, happily playing in soil.

When Gijsbert Cirkel coached his son’s soccer team, he remembers the kids resting under a tree after a game. They put their feet in the air and cried, “Our feet are hot!” Their games hard been played on artificial turf (人工草坪), which can get so hot that it burns. To address this problem. Cirkel and his Dutch research team developed a new water-storage system that cools the turf by using rainwater evaporation (蒸发).
A hydrologist, Cirkel studies the water cycle. His team’s new system collects and stores rainwater about 8. 5cm below a playing field. As this water evaporates, it cools the playing surface, similar to how sweat cools our bodies. Although natural grass is cooler, the new system does a better job of keeping the turf temperature down. On a hot June day, regular artificial grass reaches 62. 2℃! That is 25℃ hotter than natural grass, while the new system is only 1. 7℃ warmer than the real grass.
The new turf system looks like a sandwich. The artificial grass goes on top, followed by filler material, with the rainwater storage below it. The team included a waterproof liner and used fiber (纤维) filler instead of rubber to improve performance. Plastic blocks in the storage area have holes for water flow.
The researchers built four small fields in Amsterdam for outdoor tests — two with the new system topped by artificial turf and one with real grass, while the last had standard artificial turf without water storage. The new system stored more rainwater and significantly cooled the surface.
“The new system is a good effort and a good step forward, ” says Vasilis Vasilou, a researcher at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Conn. He likes the new idea, even though it doesn’t solve all the problems with artificial turf, for example, artificial grass has harmful chemicals, which are bad for players.
32.What is a problem about artificial turf
A.It gets too hot in the sun. B.It wastes plenty of water.
C.It results in light pollution. D.It is soft for soccer games.
33.What can be inferred about the field tests
A.They were carried out indoors. B.They were against the law.
C.They stopped real grass growing. D.They showed a cool success.
34.What is Vasilou’s attitude to the new system
A.Worried. B.Doubtful.
C.Positive. D.Uncaring.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.The Disadvantage of Artificial Turf. B.A Practical Way to Collect Rainwater.
C.Unlocking the Secret of Natural Grass. D.Using Rainwater to Cool Artificial Turf.
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.C 35.D
根据第一段“When Gijsbert Cirkel coached his son’s soccer team, he remembers the kids resting under a tree after a game. They put their feet in the air and cried, ‘Our feet are hot!’(当Gijsbert Cirkel执教他儿子的足球队时,他记得孩子们在比赛后在树下休息。他们把脚抬在空中喊道:‘我们的脚好热啊!’)”和“To address this problem, Cirkel and his Dutch research team developed a new water-storage system that cools the turf by using rainwater evaporation.(为了解决这个问题,Cirkel和他的荷兰研究团队开发了一种新的储水系统,利用雨水蒸发来冷却草坪。)”可知,人工草坪的一个问题是它在阳光下会变得太热。故选A项。
33.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“The researchers built four small fields in Amsterdam for outdoor tests — two with the new system topped by artificial turf and one with real grass, while the last had standard artificial turf without water storage. The new system stored more rainwater and significantly cooled the surface. (研究人员在阿姆斯特丹建造了四个小场地进行户外测试——两个采用新系统且上面铺有人造草皮,一个是真草皮,最后一个是没有储水功能的标准人造草皮。新系统储存了更多的雨水并显著降低了地表温度)”可知,新系统储存了更多的雨水并显著降低了地表温度,可推理出这些实地测试表明新系统在冷却人造草坪方面取得了成功。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““The new system is a good effort and a good step forward, ” says Vasilis Vasilou, a researcher at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven, Conn (康涅狄格州纽黑文市耶鲁大学公共卫生学院的研究员Vasilis Vasilou说:“新系统是一次很好的尝试,也是向前迈出的一大步。”)”

Because of my limp (跛行) since childhood, I never thought about running a marathon. However, when my head teacher said last Friday that a campus marathon was coming up. I really wanted to take part. Considering my physical condition, I started to feel afraid of signing up.
When my friend Eric learned of my situation, he volunteered to be my running partner, determined (决心) to help me reach the finish line.
Our training journey was challenging yet satisfying. We spent countless hours running together, starting with short distances (距离) and slowly increasing our running distance. Eric’s encouragement and patience were important in keeping me active.
One autumn morning, we set out for our first long training run. With each step, I felt the weight of my leg, but Eric encouraged me to push through. “Keep going and you’ve got this!” Eric’s voice rang through the air. As the weeks passed, I noticed great improvements in my distance and speed. Eric celebrated each small victory I made and I was gradually getting the confidence and courage to take part in the marathon.
On race day, we stood among a large group of runners. Nervous, I looked at Eric, who gave me a comforting smile. When everything was ready, we set off.
The first few miles were hard. My limp became more noticeable, and doubts came into my mind. But Eric’s presence was a great source of encouragement. He cheered me on, reminding me of our months of preparation.
As we neared the end of the marathon, I could see the finish line in sight. But then, just meters away from the finish line, I fell. Pain went through my leg, and at that time, I thought about giving up.

“We’re almost there! Don’t give up!” Eric, running beside me, shouted loudly.
注意:1. 续写词数应为80左右。
