Stage I: Pre-reading Lead-in: Step 1: Look at three pictures and answer the questions. Who are beauties in your eyes And what makes him/her beautiful Possible answer: A: I think Ms. Zhang Guimei is the most beautiful teacher—she cares about students and dedicates herself to education. B: I think Jun Ji-hyun looks beautiful outwardly, but her anti-China links make her truly unbeautiful. Step 2: Watch a video and answer two questions. 1. What did the girl do to control her weight 2. What happened to her on the last scene Possible answer: The girl skipped meals frequently, took plenty of weight-loss medicine and over exercised. But she fainted at last. Stage II: While-reading (Read for structure) Step 1: Read the tip on Page 46 and then find out what is covered in the news report. Answer: A news report includes a lead, detailed information and background or supporting information. Step 2: Read the passage quickly and find the structure of the news report. Answer: Paragraph one is the lead. Paragraph two to four is the body which provides detailed information. Paragraph five to seven is the tail which provides background information. Step 3: Go through the passage quickly and find the main idea of the body and tail part. Possible answer: Paragraph two to four talks about the girl skipped meals to get slim. She is now recovering in hospital. Paragraph five is about a survey which shows many teenagers are using extreme methods to lose weight. Paragraph six to seven is about the expert gives advice on how to lose weight properly. Step 4: Understand the features of a news report and the function of each part. A news report is called “Inverted Pyramid” structure. The function of the headline is to draw the readers’ attention. And the lead is to offer the most important information. While the body part is to provide more detailed information about the event, which usually refers to the fact. And the tail part is to provide background or supporting information, which usually refers to the opinion. Stage III: While-reading (Reading for details) Step 1: Read paragraph one and find what elements are covered in the paragraph. A teenage girl fainted yesterday at Stonechester High School after skipping meals. who what when where why Paragraph one is the lead. It contains five elements such as who, what, when, where and why. Step 2: Watch a video clip about paragraph 2 to paragraph 4 , find what happened to Jennifer and finish a time line as follows. Step 3: Go through paragraph 2 to paragraph 4 again and then answer the following questions. 1.Who are interviewed 2.What are their accounts 3.Why are many people interviewed for a news report Answer: 1. Doctor, parents ,classmates and Laura are interviewed. 2.Doctor: Jennifer was found to have dangerously low blood sugar levels and was treated immediately. She will make a full recovery in a day or two. Parents: Their daughter missed breakfast that day and hardly touched her dinner the night before. Classmates: They hope to see Jennifer back at school soon. She has struggled with eating problems for a long time. Laura: Jennifer thought that skipping meals would be a simple way to reach her target weight. She has not eaten breakfast for the last few months. She had trouble concentrating in class. Laura warned her that skipping meals was unhealthy, but she wouldn’t listen. 3.The news report can provide exact information and reliable sources through viewpoints of different people, so it will be more convincing and dependable. Step 4: Read paragraph 5 out loudly by yourselves and then answer the following questions. 1.What is the present phenomenon of the teenagers’ weight-loss behavior according to the recent survey 2.What’s the function of the figures in the news report Answer: 1.One fifth of teenagers regularly skip meals, one in ten over-exercise and four per cent even take weight-loss medicine. 2.The function of figures listing in the article may make the news report more reliable, convincing and understandable. Step 5: Read paragraph 6 silently and then answer the following questions. 1.How do we treat overweight people differently 2.Why does the news report cite the expert’s words Possible answer: 1.It is normal for teenagers to be slightly overweight. If a teenager is dangerously overweight, he should lose weight properly. 2.Its function is to enhance authority, simplify complex information and use an objective viewpoint. Step 6: Skim paragraph 7 and then answer the following question. What are the experts’ suggestions Possible answer: Students should have a healthy balanced diet , keep regular hours and get plenty of exercise. These are the safest and most effective ways to get into shape. Stage IV: Post-reading Step 1: Think and summarize What are the writing features of a news report Possible answer: The structure of a news report is called the “Inverted Pyramid” structure and the important information comes first. Its language is clear and concise. Its devices employ different perspectives from different people, listing figures and an expert’s opinion.
