Most people know that listening to music when they are feeling down or depressed can encourage their spirits.
However, studies have also shown that music, especially certain tones can reduce stress. Music can change brainwave patterns, deepen breathing, and bring on a totally stress-free and more open mindset (心态). Using music to relax when considering a particular problem may not only raise your mood, but also could help you reach that “a-ha” moment and find a solution.
Music has also been shown not only to make you feel good, but also, to be a great motivator. For example, during exercise, listening to music can keep you going, or get you to exercise more by helping you to ignore negative feelings of tiredness and focus on the pleasurable feelings you get from being absorbed in the music.
Music is mainly used to record emotion. When we listen to a piece of music, we share the artist’s feelings on a visceral (发自内心的) level. That can be sad, and who among us hasn’t put on a painful love song to share in the misery after a bad break-up On the contrary, we can share in the delight of songs of joy and happiness, or any song or piece of music that reminds us of a particular happy time in our past.
So next time you are feeling down, put on Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. I bet you will feel a lot better about whatever it was that was bothering you!

D. we’ll show mercy on the artist’s life

A. What Music Means to a Music Lover

On a Saturday afternoon, you find most kids outside playing games. Kids are made for the outdoors, with their endless energy and the easy way in which they make friends. It’s not different for Kameron, an ordinary, fun-loving 7-year-old girl who loves to draw out the world’s longest hopscotch (跳格子) on the sidewalk.
In between jump-rope games, basketball shootouts and skateboard races, Kameron takes time to do something special for her elderly neighbours. Kameron’s neighbourhood is home to a good mix of young families and elderly neighbours whose children have long since left home. Kameron first started waving to them. Most of them smiled back.
Then Kameron decided that some of them needed a little pleasure. So she ran home, took her violin and made the rounds. “Can I play you a song ” she asked, after knocking on the door.
Gustav smiled wide. He has beautiful white hair and a soft accent (口音). He grew up in Scandinavia and is a wood finisher. His wife Vivian has a smile that fills their tiny home. She stood awkwardly, and had difficulty moving about. It looked terribly uncomfortable. Vivian has had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩) for over 20 years. Gustav is her full-time caregiver. They’ve replaced their daily walks with afternoon drives, but even those are getting too difficult for Vivian.
Gustav let Kameron in, and Vivian took hold of both their arms and pulled to her chair. On the table beside her was a photo of her with Gustav when they were young and energetic, travelling around Europe, Egypt and Iceland. In the photo, Vivian is very beautiful, and Gustav is handsome.
“Want me to play your favourite song ” Kameron asked. “Of course,” Gustav answered. It was the only song Kameron knew.
The small violin rested seriously under Kameron’s chin (下巴). She played as best she could. Vivian beat her leg to keep rhythm (节奏) for Kameron. Gustav held Vivian’s other hand. It was not the performance that was moving, but the memories it brought.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Music is one of the most enjoyable human experiences. Music is an ever-present companion to people’s everyday lives. 26 We listen to music and experience emotions in the absence of any events causing us to feel joy, sadness, or excitement. Over the past several decades, scholars have proposed several purposes that listening to music might fulfill.
The key reason people listen to music lies in the reward centre of the brain. Listening to pleasurable music activates areas of the reward system. Musical pleasure arises when a pattern is interrupted in some way. Listeners experience strong emotions when something unexpected happens. 27 About 2 percent of the general population don’t feel this way. This inability to get pleasure specifically from music has been called tone-deafness.
28 Music distracts our minds from the outside world. The use of music as background entertainment serves to get us into a positive mood or to become more alert. Music can relax the body because brain waves are able to go with the rhythm of a song. People’s moods can reflect what they choose to listen to. Fast or energetic music may make people feel alert and pumped, while slow music calms them down.
Music is also one of the strongest means for arousing feelings of nostalgia (怀旧). Listening to music that was played a lot during a significant life event (e.g., a family celebration) many years ago can trigger a deeply nostalgic emotional experience. 29 Maybe we have just come to hear a particular song as sad because we have learnt to associate it with an experience of loss.
People can use music to express their identity and values to others. Music helps us to show that we belong to a given social group. For example, listening to innovative music can serve to communicate the belief that one is creative and unconventional.
30
A. So music is part of who we are. B. Music provides a means of escape. C. We use music to connect with our inner selves. D. Music can serve as a reminder to show brain waves. E. The feeling is not the music, but in what it reminds us. F. Music can change our mood, emotions, motivation, and movement. G. However, not everyone experiences intense emotional responses to music.

School Music Festival Came to a Successful Close
Aimed to develop students’ interest in music and improve their taste in music, our school held the School Music Festival last Thursday and Friday in the Campus Art Centre.
The whole school took an active part in the musical performances, which featured both Chinese popular and classical music, as well as foreign classical music. Some students sang their favourite songs, and others played traditional musical instruments. What was the most surprising was that two famous musicians also came to the festival.
The performances were quite popular with all the students in our school and turned out a huge success. A joyous atmosphere filled the festival, which was so warmly welcomed by the audience, inspiring the students’ much more enthusiasm for music.
