Passage 1(Unit 1 Wise men in history)
Passage 1文章内容:历史上著名人物
When the famous scientist Albert Einstein was 16 years old, he imagined himself riding alongside a beam (束) of light. He used this picture in mind to help him when working out the “theory of relativity (相对论)”. “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” said Einstein.
Daydreaming, called “thought experiments” by Einstein, can make you have wild imaginings, like flying around in space. It lets your mind walk slowly around ideas, memories and experiences that aren’t happening right now. It means thinking ahead to a holiday or remembering how much you enjoyed a birthday party. According to health organizations, daydreaming for a while each day can improve your emotional (情绪的) health and creativity.
★ . For example, after a long day at work or a disagreement with a friend, let your mind fly away to the picture of a big meal or the friend’s smiling face. Imagining how you’re going to speak in public is like having practiced the scene in your head before for many times, which can make you feel calmer. A couple of minutes to let your minds wander (漫游) and hope for good things to happen lower negative (消极的) thinking. Guo Qiang, a psychologist, suggests we should make time to daydream. “It can be a powerful tool to shape our feelings.” he said.
However, try not to let your mind be absent when you need to focus in class or cross the road. Instead, find a time when you don’t have to focus on anything, like going for a walk or brushing your teeth.
Daydreaming inspires creativity and lets you find new worlds where there are no limits (限制) to what you can do or who you are. To encourage creativity, think about interesting ideas and see where your mind takes you. Research shows that people often come up with more solutions to problems after they’ve “had a dream”. So next time you’re stuck with homework, stop for a moment and see where you go in the new world.

Passage 2(Unit 2 Great minds)
Passage 2文章内容:著名人物
Think of somebody you really admire. You will probably find that their success didn’t come easily. As “Father of Hybrid Rice(杂交水稻)”, Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to reduce world hunger and helping to feed the country with the largest population.
Wu Mengchao, the “Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery(肝胆外科)”, focused on saving people’s lives for nearly eighty years. He performed more than 16,000 operations during his life. Holding the surgeon’s knife for such a long time deformed his fingers. Wu once said, “It would my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day.”
In 1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria(疟疾), Tu Youyou, pharmacologist (药学家) took on the job as head of a research team. She and her teammates performed different kinds of experiments. However, the results were disappointing. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received Nobel Prize.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward.”
Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming said, “When I woke up just after daybreak on 28th September, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize(变革) all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic(抗生素). But I guess that was exactly what I did.”
Some people only became successful after their deaths. Not like Pablo Picasso who became famous and very rich during his lifetime, the artist Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2,000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.
One thing all these people have in common is sticking to their goals no matter what.
1. What do Yuan Longping and Wu Mengchao have in common
A. They succeeded in solving world problems.
B. They spent all their lives serving people.
C. They achieved a lot in the medical field.
D. They are remembered for their happiness.
2. The underlined phrase deformed his fingers could be replaced by ________.
A. changed the shape of his fingers B. made him feel down
C. gave him too much pressure D. got his fingers cut off
3. It is clear that ________.

B. Vincent Van Gogh painted 2,001 artworks in his life
C. it took Tu Youyou’s team about 3 years to reach their goal
D. Thomas Edison tried 10,000 ways before he invented the light bulb
4. When Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, he ________.
A. felt too tired to stay awake B. didn’t plan to study all medicine
C. knew exactly what his success meant D. didn’t fully realize its importance
5. What does the writer mainly want to tell us

C. Great achievements aren’t made naturally. D. Great hopes make great men.
Passage 3(Unit 3 Family life)
Passage 3文章内容:AI科技带来的生活便利以及其潜在的风险
For as long as humans have appeared, we have been the smartest species (物种) on Earth. Monkeys know how to use simple tools. Elephants can be taught how to count. But things like art, literature, the Internet, and space travel have only been made possible by the amazing intelligence (智力) of humans. And yet, there are some who believe that we can create machines that can think and feel just like we do. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is defined (定义) by Merriam-Webster as “the ability of a machine to copy intelligent human behaviour”.
AI is around us every day. From Apple’s voice-activated assistant Siri to the software algorithms (算法) that shipping companies use to deal with deliveries, AI is very much a part of our lives.
But why do we try hard to create machines that can think the way we do AI can make our lives much easier. Imagine being able to be in a car, tell it the place and sit back in comfort as the AI-guided self-driving car takes you there. We’re already getting there——Changsha became the first city in China to roll out self-driving taxis in April 2020. Moreover, AI can control lighting, temperature, and security systems, making homes more comfortable and energy-saving.
However, there are risks (风险) .What if we somehow produced an artificial intelligence that was smarter than us Would they control us Would they take away our jobs These are difficult questions that AI researchers ask themselves all the time.
Apart from the risks, it has been already clear that Al is here to stay. Only time will tell if it will lead us into a new age of prosperity (繁荣), or be our end.

Passage 1(时文阅读)
The Sept 3 military parade marked the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War. It aimed to protect the post-World War II international order and celebrate the shared victory over fascism, especially Japanese fascism.
In 1931, Japan started the September 18 Incident. Through this incident, Japan took control of some parts in Northeast China. Then in 1937, Japan began a full-scale invasion of China. The Chinese people fought against Japanese forces for more than 10 years. During this time, about 35 million Chinese people were killed or injured. This long fight greatly helped with the victory of World War II in 1945. It also played a role in building a political system that has brought peace to the world.
This political system has three main parts. The first part is making fascist countries take responsibility for starting wars—and this includes asking Japan to follow a pacifist Constitution(和平宪法). The second part is creating the United Nations, an organization that helps solve international problems through talking. The third part is setting up the Bretton Woods system, which supports free trade around the world.
But the international order is now under threat. Japan is trying to drop its pacifist Constitution. The US has been pulling back from globalization by leaving some international agreements. Also, the high tariffs the US has put on imports are shaking the postwar economic system.
Because of these facts, China has a duty to protect the postwar order and keep the world stable. This is because China is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. When it comes to economic power, China is the world's largest exporter of goods and the second-largest economy in the world.
The country is also modernizing its military. The Sept 3 parade showed many new weapons, including smart equipment, as well as the combat equipment of the People's Liberation Army Air Force
Unlike what some anti-China forces have said, showing weapons in the parade was not a way to show off force. Instead, it showed that China’s military power is open and transparent(透明的). China has a national defense policy called “active defense,” which makes sure that the Chinese military will never invade another country. In fact, China’s military power is used for three important things: protecting its sovereignty, keeping its national security and protecting its territorial integrity, and maintaining global peace.
1.What is the second part of the political system that has brought peace to the world
A. Asking Japan to follow a pacifist Constitution
B. Making all countries reduce their military forces
C. Setting up the Bretton Woods system to support global free trade
D. Setting up an organization to handle disagreements through dialogue
2. Why does China have a responsibility to protect the post-World War II order
A. Because China has the world's most powerful military force
B. Because China has the longest history of fighting against fascism
C. Because China has signed the most international agreements
D. Due to China’s permanent UN Security Council membership and strong economy.
3. What is the real purpose of China showing weapons in the Sept 3 parade
A. To scare neighboring countries and expand its influence
B. To show off its advanced military technology to the world
C. To prepare for a possible war against anti-China forces
D. To show military openness, transparency and global peace support.
4.What does the article mean by mentioning the US tariff war
A. To show that the US tariff war broke the world economic system
B. To prove the author's view: the international order is now under threat.
C. To push more countries to join the Bretton Woods system
D. To shows that the US is actively leading globalization
5.What’s the main idea of this passage
A. How China won the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression
B. Sept 3 parade’s meaning, post-war order threats, and China’s role in protecting it
C. The introduction of China's new weapons displayed in the Sept 3 military parade
D. The threats to the post-World War II international order from Japan and the US
Passage 2(24-25·广州第七中学·期中)
While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural networks (人工神经网络) modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets (数据集) during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon’s own voice.
When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). The neural networks then produce variations (变化) of that music. “Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn’t,” Holly said. So what does music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot It sounds like music from the future!
But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one exploring AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The godfather of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz developed EMI—Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it.
AI might not take over the job of the “pop star” anytime soon, or will it Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer. And I’m a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question: Can we reproduce creativity using a computer
Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected.
1. What plays an important role in producing PROTO
A. Holly’s special voice. B. The input of existing music.
C. Holly’s rich knowledge. D. The use of an instrument.
2. Why does the writer mention the example of Miquela Sousa
A. To compare human and robotic artists.
B. To show smart robots are very popular.
C. To lead people to think deeply on AI musicians.
D. To explain the tasks of computer-generated artists.
3. What does the writer think of the future of music co-created by AI and humans
A. Bright. B. Hopeless. C. Uncertain. D. Not mentioned.
4. What does the article mainly talk about
A. The increasing practice of AI.
B. The history of computer-generated music.
C. The development of musical composition.
D. The combination of AI and musical composition.
Passage 3(24-25·广州实验中学·期中)
Do you want to improve your physics and chemistry grades Well, maybe you should first learn something about the struggles of great scientists.
The American Psychological Association (美国心理学会) did a study. More than 400 students in New York City took part in it. The students were divided into three groups.
Group 1 read a typical textbook that describes (描述) the achievements of great scientists. Group 2 read about those scientists’ personal struggles. For example, as a Jew, Einstein escaped from Nazi Germany to keep away from being killed. Group 3 read about the scientists’ intellectual (智力的) struggle, such as Marie Curie’s experiments. These stories about struggles also told students how the scientists dealt with these problems.
The students took a science test before the study. After the six-week study, they took another. Scientists found those in Groups 2 and 3 improved their science grades. Students in Group 1 didn’t see a grade increase. Some of them even had lower grades after the study.
The study was led by Xiaodong Lin, a professor. According to Xiaodong, kids who think Einstein was born a genius believe they will never match him. Many of them fail to realize that any success requires a long journey. Along the way, there are many difficulties.
Students who read the struggle stories were more likely to say great scientists were like themselves. The great minds also had to solve problems to make achievements.
Xiaodong says today’s science textbooks fail to bring science to life. As a result, students hardly regard science as part of their everyday lives. Instead, they just see a long list of facts that they have to remember. Xiaodong thinks textbooks should include more stories about how great scientists had to struggle a long way to become successful. And they should pay more attention to how these scientists responded to the problems they met along the way.
1. Who took part in the study held by the American Psychological Association
A. Students who studied in secondary school.
B. Students who went to schools in New York City.
C. Students who were interested in physics and chemistry.
D. Students who were poor at physics and chemistry grades.
2. What is the writer’s purpose of talking about Einstein
A. To encourage students to study harder.
B. To express writer’s respect for his bravery.
C. To show his great intelligence in studying physics.
D. To prove success comes after many life difficulties.
3. According to the passage, how can we improve our physics and chemistry grades
A. By reading the achievements of great scientists more carefully.
B. By listening more carefully to our physics and chemistry teachers.
C. By learning about the difficulties that great scientists once experienced.
D. By spending more time remembering the list of facts in our science textbooks.
4. Where can we probably find this passage
A. A science fiction. B. A fashion magazine.
C. A story book. D. An education website.
Passage 4(24-25·广州荔湾第一中学·期中)
Is rice your favorite staple food (主食) Over 90 percent of the world’s rice is eaten in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. However, eating rice can increase the risk of developing health problems such as diabetes (糖尿病). Now, scientists in the Philippines have created a new variety of rice that may help alleviate the growing burden (重担) of diabetes.
White rice has a high glycemic index (GI, 升糖指数), which can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly. Research has found a connection between eating large amounts of rice, particularly white rice, and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
Currently, around 537 million people around the world have diabetes, with over 60 percent of them living in Asia. This number is expected to reach 783 million by 2045, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
To fight this issue (问题), researchers at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines have teamed up with various global institutions (机构). Based on the IRRI’s large rice gene bank, they examined 380 seed samples over 10 years to identify genes with a lower GI and higher protein content. They then combined (组合) them to develop a new, healthier type of rice.
The new rice has a very low GI and contains twice the amount of protein typically found in regular rice. Rice varieties with higher protein content may contribute to (有助于) slower digestion and absorption rates (消化和吸收速度), meaning they may be able to help control blood sugar levels.
According to the IRRI’s Director General Yvonne Pinto, this new type of rice can help meet important goals for food security (安全). “This could have a big impact (影响) in Asia, as well as in Africa, among the rice-consuming countries (大米消费国),” Nese Sreenivasulu, a scientist at IRRI told The Guardian.
So far, the rice has only been grown in IRRI laboratories. There are plans to start growing in India and the Philippines to help the poor.

Passage 5(24-25·广州荔湾第一中学·期中)
A mindset is the way of thinking. Your mindset can affect almost every part of your daily life. Dr. Carol Dweck, a scientist who studies how the mind works, has discovered that people with a fixed mindset deal with problems in a different way from those with a growth mindset.
Imagine that two students, Anna and Amy, are taking a really hard math test in September. Anna has a fixed mindset, which means she believes that a person’s intelligence is fixed. You’re either smart or stupid, and if you’re smart, everything is easy for you. Amy has a growth mindset, which means she believes that intelligence can grow. Not everyone can become a genius, but they can improve the skills they have and develop new ones.
So, which is right It’s Amy, since, believe it or not, research shows that you really can get smarter by working hard, practising, and challenging yourself.
As you know, your brain is made up of billions of neurons (神经元). They are all connected and send messages to each other. Scientists have found that when we learn, neurons make new connections and old connections grow stronger. But if connections aren’t used, they will break down. So, learning is like exercise for your brain. The more you work it out, the stronger and smarter your network of neurons will become.
According to Dr. Carol Dweck’s studies, people with a fixed mindset worry about grades. They’re afraid of looking stupid when they make mistakes. People with a growth mindset care about learning not grades. They learn from their mistakes and try to find different ways of solving problems. They ask for help when necessary. In only two years, babies learn to walk, talk and feed themselves. They never worry about looking stupid when learning. If they make mistakes, they just try again.
Dweck’s team also discovered that, with some work, kids can choose to have a growth mindset. They can do better in school. The trick is to notice what mindset you have. If you ever think yourself stupid, it’s not true. You just have not learned how to do something yet.
1. Which of the following is true about neurons
A. Learning is not always helpful to them.
B. All of them are connected to each other.
C. They only make new connections when we study.
D. The connections among them will never break down.
2. What might a man with a growth mindset agree about
A. If people are smart enough, they can do everything easily.
B. The mindset plays the most important role in people’s life.
C. People will look foolish when they make mistakes in study.
D. Everyone can get smarter by working hard and practising more.
3. Why does the writer give the example of babies in Paragraph 5
A. To show babies learn new skills from mistakes.
B. To show babies easily make mistakes in daily life.
C. To show babies learn skills faster than older people.
D. To show babies have fewer worries than older people.
4. How did the writer develop his main idea
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling true stories.
C. By comparing the differences. D. By showing reasons and results.
Passage 6(24-25·广州第六中学·期中)
Teens often find themselves hard to talk about their needs or values with others. Even when their guts (直觉) are telling them that someone is crossing a line with them, it’s difficult for them to express that the situation is making them uncomfortable. For this reason, teens need to learn how to set boundaries (界限) with others.
Although boundaries are different for everyone, they help teens set limits with others in order to protect themselves. Setting boundaries allows teens to communicate with other people about what is OK and what is not OK with them, and it is necessary for teen friendships as well.
Explanation of Boundaries
Boundaries are limits that teens set to protect themselves in some way from being hurt or bullied. As an expression of self-esteem, boundaries let people know who they are, what they value, and how they want to be treated. In addition, boundaries help to create space between teens and other people when they need them.
Importance of Boundaries
Learning how to set boundaries is an important part of growing up. It’s also necessary to develop relationships that are respectful, supportive, and healthy. However, many teens have trouble setting boundaries with their friends. When it happens, it puts them at risk for everything from unhealthy friendships to bullying. Setting boundaries with other people not only helps keep teens safe but also helps protect their mental health.
If teens meet bad people in their lives, such as unkind friends or adults that make them feel uncomfortable, they need to set boundaries with those people, too. Being in an unhealthy relationship can cause bad results.
Ways of Setting Boundaries
In fact, teens will run into a number of different situations throughout their lives that challenge their values and beliefs. Knowing how to set boundaries can help them stay safe and be true to who they are. Please have a look at the following ways.
1. Which one is a good example of setting boundaries according to the passage

①A lot of people play sports, but very few people become sports professionals (专家). If sports aren’t going to be your future, then why should you play them Why should you train every day Why should you work hard and feel sore (酸痛的) the next day Wouldn’t it be better to forget sports and only pay attention to your lessons In fact, there are a lot of reasons to play sports.
②First of all, sports are a great way to exercise. Exercising keeps you healthy and strong. It also helps you stay in a good condition. When you exercise, your body makes endorphins (安多芬) which give you more energy and make you feel happier.
③Also, sports teach young people how to communicate and work as a team. They teach young people to respect (尊重) their coaches, teammates and players from the other team. Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sports, he or she may have fewer problems. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed.
④Another good way of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days, a lot of people spend too much time watching television and playing video games. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun. You take in fresh air. All of these things are important.

Passage 8(24-25·广州南武中学·期中)
Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.
Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!
Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.
This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio. This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize (识别) your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.
So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet So far, no one has invented a good way to send images (映像) of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.

Passage 9(24-25·深圳红岭教育集团·期中)
Do you like playing sports Playing team sports can not only help you stay healthy, but also give you a chance to make friends. If you are a member of a sports team, you may feel stressed in a match. That’s because coaches, parents and friends place high expectations upon you. This may make it hard for you to do your best.
Is it a bad thing for others to have high expectations of you Not necessarily! Sometimes it just shows they believe in you. But when expectations are impossible to meet, they have a bad effect. They may hurt your self-esteem (自尊心) or make you lose confidence.
Can expectations influence you in a good way Of course! A researcher (研究员) named Robert Rosenthal first studied this in 1964. He carried out a test at a primary school. First, he chose a group of students at random (随机地).Then, he told teachers at the school that those students were highly likely to succeed. He said those students’ IQs would rise quickly in the coming years.
Then, Rosenthal followed those students for two years. He found that, when teachers expected those students to do well, that’s exactly what happened. He concluded that teachers’ higher expectations influenced those students’ learning.
Rosenthal found that teachers acted differently toward students when they held higher expectations for them. For example, they gave these kids more time to think about questions. They also gave more support and chances to those students.
It’s important to hold high but proper expectations for people. Start by getting to know those around you and understanding their dreams. Then, support them by holding proper expectations.Everyone can benefit (受益) from the expectations of their friends, family members and teachers.

Passage 10(24-25·深圳红岭教育集团·期中)

Passage 11(24-25·深圳南海中学·期中)
Zigong, in Sichuan Province is home to Chinese lanterns. Zigong lantern is known as the best lantern in the world. The Zigong Lantern Festival dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The festival has rapidly developed with traditional culture and modern technologies. In 2008, the Zigong Lantern Festival was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage(国家级非物质文化遗产), becoming a shining name card for Chinese culture to go out into the world.
“Making a huge lantern for exhibition requires 17 steps,” said Wan Songtao, an inheritor (传承人) of Zigong lantern-making. “Each step is finished by a team instead of a single maker.” Wan added. The sundial (日晷), a kind of lantern, made by Wan’s team, for example, took about 80 makers over 50 days to complete the whole process. Unlike the lanterns in other places, Zigong lanterns use modern technologies such as AI, mechanical engineering (机械工程), and holography (全息摄影术). They are perfect combinations (结合) of lights, sounds and movements.
What’s more, the theme of the lantern can be chosen in different ways. “Anything that can be designed on a lantern can make a wonderful show, and everyone is encouraged to turn their ideas into real works,” said Zhang Fanglai, a leading researcher at the Colorful Lantern Museum of China. And the rich themes of Zigong lanterns show the spirit of creativity and warmth from the bottom of the local people’s heart.
The government encourages local people to learn lantern-making widely. Without doubt, at the heart of the Zigong Lantern Festival’s success is the local tradition of pulling together. Passage13(24-25·深圳·期中)
Can a small group of drones (无人机) make sure the railways are safe and reliable and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year That is the very likely future of using today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure (基础设施) worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to check railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be checked, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend nearly 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to check and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews’ efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don’t need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones of the future—They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run automatically. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
1. What makes the use of drones to rail lines possible
A. The use of drones in checking on power lines.
B. Drones’ ability to work at high altitudes.
C. The reduction of cost in designing drones.
D. Drones’ reliable performance in remote areas.
2. What does the “maintenance” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Personnel safety. B. Assistance from drones.
C. Check and repair. D. Construction of infrastructure.
3. What function (功能) is expected of the rail drones
A. To provide early warning. B. To make trains run automatically
C. To earn profits for the crews. D. To speed up transportation.
4. Which is the best title for the text
A. What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B. How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C. What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face
D. How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways
Passage14(24-25·深圳·期中)
Have you heard of mental toughness Often talked about in relation to sports, mental toughness is characterized by the ability to always perform well under stress. Research has shown that it is also a useful quality (品质) for students, with benefits for school achievement, classroom behavior, and relationships with others.
However, mental toughness is often misunderstood. It is sometimes related to hiding your feelings, or not acknowledging (承认) your weaknesses, which can harm student well-being, as well as school performance and socializing.
So, what actually is mental toughness, and how can it be developed in schools
Students who show mental toughness are aware of and able to control their emotions. This helps them to think clearly under stress, on the day of exams for example. One way to help with this is to encourage students to talk to themselves in a positive and helpful way. Students may be upset if they don’t do as well on a task as they hoped. By asking themselves questions, such as “What would I do differently next time ”, they can stop focusing on the negatives and direct their attention towards improving in the future.
Mental toughness means asking for help. Many students are too ashamed to do it, for fear they would show weakness by acknowledging they don’t understand something. However, others actually consider it a positive quality. Recognizing when they are experiencing difficulties takes courage for students, but it also shows a willingness to learn and get better.
Mental toughness is also about being open to learning, not being a know-it-all. Over time, the students who grow the most are those who like to explore things, looking for answers in books, online, or by paying attention to what’s happening around them. They also work together, helping each other with challenges.
What’s more, mental toughness involves having a strong sense of self-belief and confidence in one’s abilities. Mentally tough students have a clear idea of their goals, and their wills to achieve them are unwavering. They are not easily influenced by others’ opinions and are willing to step outside of their comfort zone to reach their goals.
To create mentally tough students and classrooms, it is important for teachers themselves to be role models. Teachers can develop their mental toughness in much the same way as students. In order to develop mental toughness, both students and teachers should recognize that it is about having positive behaviors and attitudes that help them learn and improve.
1. You were most probably being mentally tough when ________ .
A. you kept your sadness inside without telling others
B. you acted as if you were doing well with everything
C. you received praise for answering a difficult question

A. Experiencing difficulties makes students fess willing to learn.
B. Mentally tough students doubt their abilities when facing failure.
C. Mentally tough students have curiosity about the world around them.
D. High-performing students are more likely to have a good attitude to learning.
4. According to the passage, what is important for teachers to do in order to develop mental toughness in their students
A. Maintain a strict and authoritative classroom environment.
B. Avoid making mistakes in front of students.
C. Focus only on academic performance and achievement.

【答案】1. B 2. D 3. A 4. C

1. Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1
A. To start a story. B. To explain an idea.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To discuss a problem.
2. What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about
A. When smart glasses might be made.
B. Where smart glasses could be used.
C. How smart glasses would give directions.
D. Why smart glasses should be changed.
3. Which of the following technologies needs to be improved to invent smart glasses
A. Making spatial audio. B. Recognizing voices.
C. Creating digital 3D objects. D. Sending images onto glasses.

Passage 10(24-25·深圳红岭教育集团·期中)
