Just what is about roller coasters? It seems we just can’t get enough of them. This week we take a look at some of the top amusement parks and the roller coasters that have helped make them famous.
Holiday World
It is a family park in the sense that resists the exciting atmosphere of its competitors and instead offers a more relaxing and friendly experience. Rare in that it is privately owned and it has many features that other parks often can’t match. There is lots of entertainment for youngsters, so parents appreciate the park’s family-friendly policy of free entry to the water park, reasonable food prices and unlimited soft drinks free of charge.
Lake Compounce
Lake Compounce, being one of America’s more traditional parks, is a rare find indeed. As the oldest continuously operating amusement park in the US, it has been a popular family spot since 1846. Like many old-time parks, it fell on hard times and was in danger of being closed. Luckily, in 1977, a well-known company came to its rescue with huge infusions (注入) of cash. The transformed park with its new rides is attracting many new fans.
Knott’s Berry Farm
As one of America’s favourite theme parks, Knott’s has something for everyone. For those seeking a breathtaking rush, try the roller coaster, Ghost Rider or the Xcelerator. Ghost Rider is the single largest attraction in amusement park history and one of the longest and tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. If you are after something a little less exciting, go to Camp Snoopy or visit the heart of Knott’s, Ghost Town, for a glance (一瞥) of life in the Wild West of the 1880s. With its cowboys, carriages, steam trains and historic buildings — many transported from mining towns — Ghost Town will let you relive a piece of the past.
Islands of Adventure
In the style of Walt Disney World, Islands of Adventure (IOA) is divided into themed “lands”. Unlike the sugar-coated Magic Kingdom, however, IOA features attractions guaranteed (保证) to set the heart racing. Its roller coasters are state-of-the-art fun. While the Spiderman is fantastic, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve experienced The Incredible Hulk’s wild and unique uphill launch. The effect is like being trapped inside an airplane that’s flying out of control.

December 13, 2022, was a normal day in the cafeteria (食堂) for students at West Alexander Middle School. The cafeteria is typically a social place with students having some free talk time and teachers watching from the stage.
On this particular day, sixth-grader Jaxen Hubbard, was eating his lunch, including a bag of goldfish crackers. He had the crackers in one hand and in his other hand, he was holding the cap of his water bottle. When Jaxen related the events of this incident, he said he must have put the water bottle lid (盖子) in his mouth with a handful of goldfish.
His breathing and speech were affected, but he showed no fear. He was able to communicate his need for help with his body language to teachers. The camera in the cafeteria caught all this on video.
Officer Shawtae Watts heard a call on her walkie-talkie (对讲机) that there was an immediate need for help in the cafeteria and she was the first on the scene. She said the teacher on the walkie-talkie said, “We need help in the cafeteria NOW!” She said that when she entered the cafeteria, she could see Jaxen from across the room. She ran to him and could see that he was choking (窒息). She didn’t ask questions and began immediately administering the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) in an effort to clear his airway.
Watts said it wasn’t long before the water bottle lid was out of Jaxen’s throat. It was a messy procedure, but a successful one.
Officer Watts has been the School Resource Officer at West for a little over a year, and she had served in law enforcement since 2008. She said this was the first time in her career that she had to perform the Heimlich maneuver.
When asked about Officer Watts, Assistant Principal Miss Jessica Mundy said, “Watts is always first on the scene. She is obviously a valuable resource to the staff and students at West Alexander Middle School.”
4. What happened to Jaxen?
A. He got food poisoning.
B. He suffered from a stuck lid.
C. He was in conflict with other students.
D. He began choking after drinking water.
5. How did Jaxen respond to his trouble?
A. He tried to take the cap out. B. He was too frightened to move.
C. He signaled the teachers to come. D. He turned to the camera for help.
6. How was the rescue?
A. Simple. B. Effective. C. Well-planned. D. Time-consuming.
7. What did Jessica say about Watts?
A. She is creative. B. She is energetic.
C. She is outgoing. D. She is committed.
C
As the world’s population keeps expanding, the demand for food increases, and many farmers look to certain practices to increase their output so as to meet demand. This has led to a widespread use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Even though these may increase yield and better protect crops, they can have harmful effects on people and the environment. That is why organic produce is becoming more and more popular — people want to be sure that the food they are taking in is not harmful to them and has no damaging effect on the environment.
Some farmers are shying away from their overreliance (过度依赖) on chemicals in farming and instead turning to an old farming method: integrated rice-duck farming, where farmers would allow ducks into rice fields to help in the farming process.
In a study published in 2013, the researchers studied the effects of integrated rice-duck farming and came to the conclusion that “compared with conventional rice cultivation (耕作), rice-duck cultivation shows great benefits to ecological (生态的) cost and economic income”. Besides, they found that the ducks play various roles. They remove unwanted plants, eat harmful insects, and flatten the field to prepare it for planting the crop, and their droppings act as natural fertilizer. The ducks themselves are also provided with natural food, which increases the quality of their meat.
All an all, rice-duck cultivation seems like a winning method. It can boost the growth of rice, improve soil properties, and prevent plant diseases and harmful insects. Originating in China, this method is being used across Asia and is getting increasingly popular. The use of ducks in farming is also being applied in South Africa, France, and Iran.
8. What makes farmers turn to organic farming?
A. Strong desire for more profits. B. The reality of increasing population.
C. Health and environmental awareness. D. The increasing cost of chemical fertilizers.
9 What does the underlined phrase “shying away from” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Avoiding. B. Placing. C. Increasing. D. Ignoring.
10. What can ducks do in the farming process?
A. Drive off harmful insects. B. Speed up crop planting.
C. Stop the growth of grass. D. Generate natural fertilizer.
11. What can we infer about rice-duck cultivation from the last paragraph?
A. It has a promising future. B. Its benefits remain to be seen.
C. It may lose popularity over time. D. Its application needs in-depth study.
D
The quote “Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” by English author David Mitchell may seem cryptic (含义隐晦的) and silly to many. But if you reflect on the meaning of this statement, there’s actually something very deep about it.
There are a few different ways we can interpret a phrase like travelling far enough. If you think about it literally, there is probably some amount of distance that we need to go. In doing so, when we get to our destination, we will see everything with new eyes.
We may be surprised by what we see and change our outlook on life. This interpretation could apply to how people interact in their everyday lives.
People have prejudices (偏见), stereotypes (刻板印象) and judgements towards other people based on where they live or grew up. When we travel outside those communities or countries, we learn to appreciate those differences rather than hold them against others.
Another interpretation is one that focuses on feeling confident and comfortable with ourselves while being far away from where we normally hang out and spend time, at home or work. It’s easy to get on a track where we see our habits and routine as comforting. But it’s important that we push our boundaries if we are ever going to make any kind of progress in life.
So take a leap into unknown territory. Explore places that you haven’t been to before. You can change your viewpoint and gain some perspective on who you are as a person.
12. What does the author think of “Travel far enough, you meet yourself.”?
A. Stupid. B. Confusing. C. Accessible. D. Insightful.
13. What can be concluded from the literal sense of the quote?
A. Travelling can make us more open. B. We can discover our true selves in travelling.
C. Travelling far enough changes who we are. D. We should avoid judging others while travelling.
14. According to paragraph 5, to make progress in life, we should ___________.
A. travel to far places B. expand our comfort zone
C. focus on positive feelings D. quit old habits and routines
15. What might be the best title for the text?
A. How Can We Walk Out of Our Comfort Zone?
B. How Do We Change Our Mindset and Feel Comfortable?
C. What Does Travelling Alone Teach Us About Ourselves?
D. What Does “Travel Far Enough, You Meet Yourself.” Mean?

About a half-mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming.
In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(起泡的浮渣). Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayed away.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.”
The ice looked solid. No water showed through it, but I hesitated. “Go ahead.” Harry urged. “Try it. You’re lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.
In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)! I stretched out(伸展) my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.
I tried to climb out of the hole but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice.
I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot. “I can’t get out!” I screamed when I caught some breath.

6. How was the rescue?
A. Simple. B. Effective. C. Well-planned. D. Time-consuming.

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】He turned and ran from the pond. Staring at his familiar figure out of sight, I wondered:“Is he running for help, or is he running away and leaving me sliding to the bottom? ” After what seemed to be centuries of waiting, I was on the edge of collapse. Suddenly, Harry came back with a branch, which was large, black, and v-shaped. He pushed the branch toward me. I grabbed it immediately and was eventually dragged out of the icy water by Harry. What a narrow escape! We stumbled home, with my clothes dripping water.
The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. She helped me take off my coat, and gave me a quick bath, then passed me a cup of milk to warm me up.I tearfully complained to her about all that had happened and Harry was blamed for getting me involved into such a trouble. His head drooping, Harry made an apology to me. I was comforted and relieved, but in fact, the pond was still attractive to young Harry and me, especially when winter came again.
