Where Europe and Asia meet, magical Georgia sits on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus (高加索) mountain range. For the past decade, it has slowly been making a reputation for its unique combination of ancient and modern attractions. Besides, Georgia also offers a huge variety of scenery and activities.
There are several things to know before tourists visit.
1. Give yourself plenty of time
Georgia appears small on a map, leading some first-time visitors to assume it can be seen in just a few days. But due to a combination of mountainous situation and infrastructural (基础设施) shortcomings, that’s not the case — travel times between regions are significant.

Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo is one of the most popular ones in China, and now due to its daily live streaming programs, the number of its followers has risen significantly.
At the same time, more young people are joining the zoo as keepers, said Shen Zhijun, head of the zoo. Of the 140 keepers at the zoo, 40 percent of them were born after 1995, and 20 percent of the keepers were born after 2000.
Jia Tianci, 28, takes care of about 20 wolves at the zoo, where he started work in 2020 after graduating from Nanjing Agricultural University with a bachelor’ s degree in veterinary (兽医的) medicine. Born and raised in Nanjing, Jia dreamed of becoming a vet. His parents didn’t understand his decision to become a keeper until they saw him take care of the wolves.
“I feel content when the wolves are mentally and physically healthy. Although they obviously cannot speak like humans, I can tell from changes in their waste, such as its color and smell, whether they are healthy,” Jia said. In addition to acting as a keeper, Jia accompanies and chats with visitors to the zoo. “I remember my visit to a zoo during my childhood. I loved watching the monkeys and feeding them cookies. However, after becoming a keeper, I realized that this type of behavior was totally wrong,” Jia said. “People love interacting with animals, but the first thing we tell visitors is not to disturb them. Behaviors such as banging (猛敲) things, shouting at the animals and feeding them, are harmful.”
In 2013, Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo started to employ young keepers who have master’s degrees. Shen said that certain people considered the employment of graduates with such degrees to be a total waste of talent.
“Taking care of wildlife, especially endangered species, is a highly demanding job that requires continuous study,” Shen said. “Working at a zoo also calls for a broad knowledge of subjects such as biology, zoology and environmentalism.”
4. What has contributed to the popularity of Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo?
A. Many animal lovers. B. Selling goods online.
C. Daily live broadcast. D. Animal performances.
5. Why did Jia Tianci’s parents disagree with his career choice at the beginning?
A. They thought the job would be too boring.
B. They were unaware of the job’s significance.
C. They thought their son wouldn’t make ends meet.
D. They expected their son would work in a cleaner environment.
6. What kind of job is an animal keeper in Jia Tianci’s opinion?
A. It is smelly but highly-paid. B. It is vital and risky.
C. It is demanding but fulfilling. D. It is eye-catching and satisfying.
7. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Whoever likes animals is fit for the job.
B. Taking care of wildlife calls for cooperation.
C. Few young people are joining the zoo as keepers.
D Visitors should behave themselves when visiting zoos.

How we learn accents before we learn words
“No!” That’s the only word we hear in the latest cute baby video to go viral. But it’s not the words that baby Orla says that has made this video so popular. It’s the fact that she clearly imitates (模仿) the distinctive Scouse accent (口音) from Liverpool.
This now-famous baby may only have been born in 2022, but the different accents of babbling (咿哑声) babies have been studied for many years. A study from 2009 found that French babies tend to cry with a rising intonation, while German babies’ cries often have a falling intonation. Other studies have shown American and French babies reflecting syllables (音节) from English and French respectively, and that babies with parents who speak a tonal (声调的) language, like Mandarin, had a greater range of tones in their crying.
So why does this happen? As children develop, they practise making the sounds of the language that they hear around them. It’s natural that they pick up the sounds around them. In fact, babies start to learn language from their mother from three months before birth. However, it’s not just the language of immediate family and caregivers that has an impact. Professor Caroline Floccia highlights studies suggesting that children are more likely to learn the accent of their environment than that of a parent who has an accent that is foreign to that location.
Why is this important to know? Well, what it shows us is that babies are learning language through practice, and that the more time that parents spend interacting with their children, the greater opportunity for this. While babbling babies may not be able to say many words, studies estimate that they can understand many times the number of words than those that they can actually say. Giving babies exposure to a greater number of words allows them to better build their vocabulary.
8. What makes the video of baby Orla so popular?
A. Her cute appearance. B. Her ability to say “No”.
C. Her clear pronunciation. D. Her Scouse accent imitation.
9. What does the underlined word “respectively” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Individually. B. Apparently.
C. Abnormally. D. Identically.
10. What does Professor Caroline Floccia stress?
A. Babysitters have no effect on children’s accent.
B. Children will always learn the accent of their parents.
C. Environment has more impacts on babies’ language learning.
D. Children are more likely to learn the accent of the foreigners.
11. What does the passage imply about babies’ language learning abilities?
A. Babies can only understand a limited number of words.
B. More interactions can develop babies’ language learning.
C. Babies’ babbling is not an indication of their language learning.
D. Babies’ language learning is not affected by parental interaction.
D
A new study predicts nearly 75% of us will face extreme weather in 20 years. “In the best case, we predict that rapid changes will affect 1.5 billion people,” says physicist Bjorn Samset from Norway. This lower estimate would only be reached by reducing greenhouse gas emissions(排放)in a large degree — something that is yet to occur.
Otherwise, climate scientist Carley Iles and her colleagues’ modeling finds that if we continue on our current course, these dangerous changes will hit 70 percent of the Earth’s population. Their modeling also suggests that much of what’s to come is already locked in. Samset advises preparing for unexpected extreme events in the next 1-2 decades.
We’ve already lived through examples of these extremes. Data from Europe’s climate service Copernicus shows Earth just had its hottest Northern Hemisphere summer on record. The Southern Hemisphere has been experiencing a record-breaking warm winter too. This global temperature increase has brought with it fatal fires, floods, storms, and droughts that are destroying crops and leading to increasingly widespread hunger, creating favorable conditions for the spread of more diseases as well. “Like people living in a war zone with the constant sounds of bombs and guns, we are becoming deaf to what should be alarm bells,” says climate scientist Jennifer Francis.
With extreme emissions cuts we can reduce some of these impacts, but this will cause some regions more immediate issues too. “While cleaning the air is critical for health reasons, air pollution has also masked some of the effects of global warming,” explains professor Laura Wilcox from England. “But not acting means these worsening weather extremes will likely impact most of us within the very near future.”
“These conclusions emphasize the need for both continued mitigation(缓解)and adaptation to potentially unexpected changes over the next 20 years even under a low-emissions condition,” writes Iles.
12. What can help to reduce the impact of extreme weather changes?
A. Building more disaster prevention projects.
B. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to a great extent.
C. Increasing the use of renewable energy sources.
D. Improving early warning systems for extreme weather.
13. Why are people getting deaf to extreme weather?
A. As a result of social and economic pressures.
B. Because of the media’s over-reporting of extreme weather.
C. Because people have experienced so many weather extremes.
D. Due to improved technology that can better predict extreme weather.
14. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. The side effects of emission cuts.
B. The benefits of global cooperation.
C. The serious situation of the future climate changes.
D. Other measures to slow down climate change.
15. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. What to do with disasters.
B. Preparing for extreme weather.
C. Measures to reduce emissions.
D. How to fight against extreme events.

All the specialists told us what would happen during my five-year-old sister’s treatment. The doctors talked about the potential side effects of the drugs that might occur over the next two years of treatment.
When our parents told our sister she had cancer, her biggest concern was losing her hair. “Will all my hair really fall out? Will people make fun of me?” she asked, her voice filled with worry.
“Don’t worry,” I later told her in secret. “When you lose your hair, I’ll shave mine with a razor (剃刀) and we’ll both be bald (秃头的). We’ ll walk down the street proudly with our bald heads held high. We’ll swim, go to parks and play at the beach with our bald heads.” “Promise?” she asked. “Promise,” I replied, thinking it was a small sacrifice (牺牲) as long as it could cheer her and help her recover.
The days and weeks of treatment began to affect her little body. As the doctors had warned, she began to lose her hair. At first, I found some on her clothes and towels. A short time later, I found her hair on the backs of the sofas and chairs she’d been on. Before long, there were masses of hair on her pillow every morning as she awoke from her restless sleep. A few days later, she was finally completely bald.
Her head was very smooth and soft as I held her. It reminded me of that wonderful time when I held her in my arms and was amazed at how lucky I was to have such a beautiful and healthy baby sister. Her bald head was beautiful, but it also showed the signs of her battle with cancer. One afternoon at home, I thought it was time to shave my head.
However, it was then that I began seriously worrying about something. How ugly would I become when I was bald? Would my parents — who always encouraged us to maintain a certain image — scold (责备) me for having my head shaved? Would people, especially my classmates, make fun of me?
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached.

【答案】I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached. Her big, innocent eyes searched my face, filled with both curiosity and a hint of admiration. “Are you really going to do it?” she asked softly, her voice breaking the silence. I took a deep breath, feeling a mix of fear and determination. “Yes, I am,” I replied, forcing a smile. “She clapped her hands and squealed, “We’ll be twins!” The first few strokes felt strange, but with each pass of the razor, I felt lighter, as if I were shedding not just my hair, but also my fears and insecurities.
“It’s beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled. Their approval warmed my heart, and I could see the love in their eyes as they watched this moment unfold. As we stood in front of the mirror, I realized that our bald heads symbolized more than just a physical change; they represented our unity and strength in facing her battle against cancer. We were not just a family; we were warriors, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead, side by side.
