My affair with sugar began innocently enough in my childhood when I indulged (沉迷) in sweet treats as rewards for good behavior by overworked but loving parents, or as a means to celebrate special occasions. As I grew older, my craving (渴望) intensified, leading me to seek the sweet comfort of chocolate, Coke, and Cheese Cheetos. These sugary delights became my escape from the stress and worries in my life.
It wasn’t until my reflection in the mirror no longer matched the lively, intelligent person I felt inside that I realized the severity of my situation. Clothes that once fit me perfectly are now uncomfortably light, and climbing a flght of stairs leaves me breathless. Not to mention that, in the past two to three years, my weight gain has influenced my self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being.
In my search for a healthier lifestyle, I decided to turn to zero-calorie drinks, believing they would be a healthier alternative to my beloved sugary drinks. However, my research led me to an alarming discovery of the dangers of aspartame, a commonly used artificial sweetener found in many zero-calorie drinks. Despite its lack of calories, aspartame has been linked to many health concerns including headaches, dizziness, and even more severe conditions. More studies are needed to learn about artificial sweeteners’ long-term effects on our health. Still, knowing this put me off zero-calorie drinks for a while!
With newfound knowledge and determination, I began my journey, to break free from sugar addiction. The journey was challenging, with persistent cravings and constant temptations (诱惑). However, armed with healthier snack alternatives, such as fruit and nuts, and the support of loved ones, I gradually weaned myself off the sugar roller coaster. I am rediscovering some of the joys of a more balanced lifestyle. Regular exercise became my companion, boosting my energy levels and reducing stress.

A Sugary delights. B. Childhood rewards.
C. Stressful situations. D. Personal achievements.

A. They are free of artificial sweeteners.
B. They can contribute to weight loss.
C. They are highly favored by the market.
D. They pose a potential threat to health.
6. What does the underlined part mean in the last paragraph
A. Stopped consuming sugar. B. Switched to sugar replacements.
C. Monitored my sugar levels. D. Learned the tricks of sugar control.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Self-aware and reflective. B. Inquiring but careless.
C. Determined but impatient. D. Self-disciplined and ambitious.

Extremely authentic-looking prosthetic (假体的) eyes can now be 3D-printed in a small part of the time it would normally take to produce the eyes by hand, scientists demonstrate in a new study.
The new technology can create a prosthetic eye in just 90 minutes, compared with the eight hours it would normally take a skilled technician, or ocularist (假眼制造商), to produce one by hand. The 3D-printed eyes require five times less labor to make than traditional methods, the scientists behind the technology wrote in a new paper published in the journal Nature Communications.
The 3D-printed eyes also look more natural than traditional prostheses; this could help improve a patient’s self-confidence in using the devices. “Patients are very conscious about wearing a prosthesis, and they don’t want others to notice,” Johan Reinhard, lead study author and a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in Germany, told us. “With these more realistic eyes, it might help them to participate more in society,” he said.
The new printing approach involves taking a specialized image of a patient’s empty eye socket and of their healthy eye. These images are then processed and used to draft blueprints that can be sent to be 3D-printed in the lab. These 3D-printed eyes closely copy the color, size and structure of the patient’s healthy eye and are particularly good at capturing the colored part of the eye, known as the iris (虹膜), and the white part of the eye, called the sclera (巩膜). Once finished, the eyes take 15 to 30 minutes to be installed (安装) by an ocularist, Reinhard said.
“About 80% of adults in need of prosthetic eyes could theoretically have one made this way, either due to a birth defect that causes an eye to be small or missing or because they’ve lost an eye,” the team said. “However, this wouldn’t be possible for all patients, such as those who have a very complex eye socket, as the software wouldn’t be able to find a matching shape for the prosthetic eye,” Reinhard said.
“More data are needed to see if this technique could also be used to make prosthetic eyes for children, which would require more regulation,” Reinhard said.
8. Which of the following words can be best used to describe the 3D-printed eyes
A. Eco-friendly. B. Fit-for-all.
C. Realistic-looking. D. Time-consuming.
9. How does the author develop his idea mainly in Paragraph 2
A. By identifying a purpose. B. By giving examples.
C. By providing evidence. D. By making a comparison.
10. Which statement is true about a 3D-printed eye
A. It wouldn’t be possible for every adult in need of a prosthetic eye to have one.
B. The installment of one is 5 times faster than a traditional prosthetic eye.
C. It normally takes a skilled technician, or ocularist, to produce one.
D. The patients prefer to show off their prosthetic eyes.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. Prosthetic Eyes — the Hope for all Blind People
B. 3D-printed Eyes — a Better Choice
C. 3D-printed Eyes — a Source of Confidence
D. 3D-Printing — a Promising Technology
D
When it comes to being fit and healthy, we’re often reminded to aim to walk 10,000 steps per day. This can annoy many, especially when we’re busy with work and other commitments — and yet where did this number actually come from
The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer sold in1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called “Manpo-kei”, which translates to “10,000 steps meter”. This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. It’s even included in daily activity targets by popular smartwatches, such as Fitbit.
Research has since investigated the 10,000 steps a day target. But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, around 4.400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. Although it’s uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it’s one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death.
Recent research at the University of Texas has also demonstrated that if you’re walking fewer than 5,000 steps a day, your body is less able to metabolize (新陈代谢) fat the following day. A buildup of fat in the body can also increase a person’s likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is further supported by previous research which shows people who walked less than 4,000 steps a day could not change this decreased fat metabolism.
If you want to increase how many steps you get daily, or simply want to move more, one easy way includes walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. Meeting with friends for a walk — rather than in a cafe or pub — can also be useful.
12. What does the author think of the 10,000 steps per day
A. It is an upsetting target to achieve. B. It is likely to go out of style quickly.
C. It is a rising tendency of mental health D. It is effective in reducing pressure on work.
13. What does research from the Harvard Medical School suggest about the target
A. It matters as much as 7500 steps a day. B. The more steps, the lower risk of death.
C. A bit more than the target can improve health. D. About half that target appears to be beneficial.
14. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us
A. Absence of previous research. B. Recent findings of fat buildup.
C. Problems of less daily walking. D. Possible causes of physical challenges.
15. Which of the following is one of the suggested ways according to the passage
A. Working at home. B. Treating friends in a cafe or pub.
C. Driving lo work. D. Signing up for online exercise programs.

I deeply admire Mo Yan, the Nobel Prize in Literature winner from an ordinary farmer’s family.
Mo Yan, whose real name is Guan Moye, was born in Shandong Province in 1955. Although he dropped out of school and worked on the farm after the fifth grade of primary school, he has always been passionate about reading Chinese classic works.
His famous works include Red Sorghum and Frog. In 2011, he won the Mao Dun Literature Prize for Frog, and in 2012, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Mo Yan’s story inspires me a lot. He shows that even from a humble background, one can achieve great things through hard work and love for literature.
