Free Community Swap Contact:
Catherine Crawford, (718)809-1603 ccrawford@grownyc.org
Jon Klar, (646)530-0381 jklar@grownyc.org
New Yorkers looking to reduce, reuse, and save money this year are invited to participate in Stop ‘N’ Swap, a free community event organized by local nonprofit GrowNYC.
The average NYC household throws away about 2,000 pounds of waste a year. By reusing through events like Stop ‘N’ Swap, NYC residents can take part in saving over 40 million pounds of material from landfill every year. Take a break from shopping, support a cleaner future, and join the ever-growing reuse community!
WHAT: Free Stop ‘N’ Swap Community Reuse Event
WHEN: February 19th, 12pm-3pm
WHERE: Bronx Works Classic Community Center, 286 East 156th Street, Bronx, NY 10451
The public is invited to bring clean and reusable items. No one is required to bring something to take something — you can simply show up with a bag and see what’s free for the taking. Books, toys, clothing, and electronics are just some of the offerings. Furniture and other large items are not accepted at the swap. Anything leftover at the end of the day is donated or recycled.
Stop ‘N’ Swaps have developed a regular following among environmentally conscious New Yorkers. After almost two years without swaps, GrowNYC has set a goal of hosting one swap in each of the city’s 59 community districts each year, providing opportunities to make NYC truly livable — a place where every person can enjoy a healthier life.

Fooled by Randomness is a famous book in Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s landmark Incerto series, an investigation of luck, uncertainty, probability, human error, risk, and decision-making in a world we don’t understand.
Now in a striking new hardcover edition, Fooled by Randomness will change the way you think about business and the world. Nassim Nicholas Taleb has written a modern classic that turns on its head what we believe about luck and skill.
This book is about luck — or more precisely, about how we perceive and deal with luck in life and business. Set against the background of the most notable forum in which luck is mistaken for skill — the world of trading — Fooled by Randomness provides captivating insight into one of the least understood factors in all our lives. Writing in an entertaining narrative style, the author tackles major intellectual issues related to the underestimation of the influence of happenstance on our lives.
The book is populated with a number of characters, some of whom have grasped, in their own way, the significance of chance: the baseball legend Yogi Berra; the philosopher of knowledge KarlPopper; the modern financier George Soros; and the Greek voyager Odysseus. We also meet the fictional Nero, who seems to understand the role of randomness in his professional life but falls victim to his own irrational foolishness.
However, the most recognizable character of all remains unnamed — the lucky fool who happens to be in the right place at the right time — he embodies the “survival of the least fit.”
Such individuals attract devoted followers who believe in their mentor’s (导师) insights and methods. But no one can copy what is obtained by chance.
Are we capable of distinguishing the fortunate charlatan (冒充内行的人) from the genuine innovator Must we always try to uncover nonexistent messages in random events It may be impossible to guard ourselves against the unpredictability of the goddess. More than 80 percent of China’s public transport buses are new energy vehicles, the Ministry of Transport said on Tuesday.
There were 682,500 public buses on the country’s roads by the end of last year, with554,400 of them — 81.2 percent — eschewing (避开) fossil- fuel engines. The country’s public bus network has expanded to 79,800 routes, with over 20,000 kilometers of dedicated bus lanes. Last year, China’s buses provided 41.6 billion passenger trips, according to Geng Jinjun, an official from the ministry. He said the ministry and related departments have accelerated improvements to regulations, policies and standards in recent years to further the development of urban public transportation.
“Urban public transport is experiencing a new stage of policy opportunities,” Geng said, adding that the ministry is drafting policies to promote its development, as well as detailed rules for the renewal of buses and their batteries.
He said it is important to improve transportation network plans, enhance the integration (整合) of various urban transportation modes, and innovate services tailored to local needs, such as public transport to work, schools and hospitals. The ministry also aims to improve barrier — free services for the elderly.
In Cangzhou, Hebei province, the quality of public transportation, especially public bus services, has improved in recent years, according to Wang Tianyong, deputy director of the transportation bureau. “The province has continuously updated the facilities and equipment, and improved the quality of travel,” he said.
Cangzhou launched a free“medical express bus” to help patients travel to hospital in June last year. The service runs every 30 minutes. Staff are available on board to help passengers complete medical registration through their mobile phones to save time at the hospital. To benefit patients living outside Cangzhou, a large parking lot has been set up at the entrance of a freeway in the city. Patients can park their cars there and ride the free bus to the hospital.

We all pursue an ideal weight number for health and confidence, often using childhood memories, online calculators or BMI charts. However, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff warns these methods fail to consider individual differences. Our bodies change dramatically with age due to metabolism (新陈代谢) and lifestyle.
For decades, Body Mass Index (BMI) dominated weight assessments. This simple height-weight calculation sorts people from underweight to overweight. Yet Dr. Melanie Jay from NYU points out its problems: BMI gives the same ranges for 20-year-old athletes and 70-year-old grandparents. It ignores muscle mass, bone density, and health conditions, sometimes regarding fit individuals as overweight. Recent studies show that nearly 30% of people classified as overweight by BMI actually have healthy body fat percentages and normal metabolic profiles.
Newer metrics like the Body Roundness Index (BRI) focus on waist size instead of weight. “Belly fat is more dangerous than overall weight,” says Dr. Jay. Research indicates fat around organs produces harmful chemicals linked to diabetes and heart disease. However, even BRI has limitations — it can’t distinguish between fat types or account for medical conditions affecting belly size, such as digestive disorders.
Doctors increasingly emphasize overall health markers over specific weights. “Instead of focusing on a’magic number,’ we examine blood pressure, cholesterol (胆固醇), sleep quality and energy levels,” notes Dr. Jay. For those with weight-related conditions, even 5-10% weight loss can significantly improve health. A 2023 study found patients who achieved modest weight reduction showed better health markers than those pursuing extreme weight loss.
The healthiest weight, experts agree, isn’t found on charts but through sustainable habits. “When you eat nutritiously and stay active, your body finds its natural healthy weight,” advises Dr. Freedhoff. For some, medications or surgery may help, but the real goal is lifestyle change — not to achieve an ideal number on your scale. True health, after all, is measured not by a momentary reading on a scale, but by the daily choices that nourish both body and life.
12.Why does the author mention 20-year-old athletes and 70-year-old grandparents
A.To show BMI’s limitations. B.To prove BMI’s popularity.
C.To describe BMI’s main users. D.To introduce BMI’s target group.
13.What is the main advantage of BRI
A.It clarifies different kinds of fat. B.It evaluates all types of body fat.
C.It measures highly risky body fat. D.It identifies harmful chemicals in fat.
14.What is Dr. Jay’s suggestion for weight assessment
A.Stopping using BMI. B.Focusing on specific weights.
C.Considering multiple health signs. D.Adopting rapid weight loss approaches.
15.What does the author think of people’s pursuing an ideal weight number
A.Reasonable. B.Unhelpful. C.Dangerous. D.Practical.
Community sports teams provide great ways for players of all ages to have fun and socialize while they keep their skills sharp and get some exercise. If you can’t find one in your area, you can start one yourself. 16
Do your research.
17 If you find that you are the first in your community to recognize such a need, ensure that you can find enough local interest in your sport. You can invite one or two to join you in forming a preliminary leadership team.
Establish a budget.
To figure out what expenses (支出) you’ll need to cover, think about everything you’ll need to set up for your first game: Do you need to pay for using the facilities 18 Once you’ve laid out all of your costs, try to find out what revenues (收入) you’ll need to cover your expenses.
Create a league of your own.
It might seem like overkill to draft some legal documents if all you want to do is meet up with some friends for a game on Sunday mornings. 19 Playtime goes much more smoothly if everyone agrees to the same rules before the game begins.
Plan for the future.
Consider getting and training new volunteers and keep young players coming in to replace those lost to busy careers or family responsibilities. 20 There might be a possibility of you deciding to quit.
A.Do you need to buy sports equipment
B.What social benefits might your club bring to the region
C.Read on to find tips for starting your own sports club team.
D.And don’t forget to pass your knowledge and enthusiasm on to the next generation.
E.But having written guidelines in place will help to keep everyone on the same page.

“This Saturday, we’ll be visiting cats at the animal shelter. If you’d like to join us, here’s an application form”, said Ms. Delgado, the school librarian who had held the reading engagement event for students.
Ben loved cats and he had always wanted one, so he hurried to take an application form. Then Ms. Delgado added, “We’ll be reading to the cats and award readers who make most progress.” Ben stopped. Reading al oud can be a challenging task. Ben might feel his heart racing, his palms sweating, and his voice shaking as he read. He might stumble over words or lose his place in the text. He might feel like everyone was watching him and judging him. Still, he really wanted to visit the cats, so he took an application form anyway.
On Saturday, Ben arrived at the shelter with some of his classmates. “This is Max,” the shelter worker told Ben as she handed him a gray cat. Ben carried Max to a beanbag chair and sat down. Max settled onto his lap. He took a book he’d been working on and started reading. Max, very different from other cats walking around the room while the kids read, purred (发出呼噜声) on his lap as if he had understood what Ben read.
“I’m glad Max is staying and listening to my reading and he is the best cat ever,” Ben told Dad excitedly. “I’m glad you two are friends,” Dad said. All week, Ben’s heart was filled with anxiety as he waited for Saturday to arrive. He was eager to read to Max and the anticipation of spending time with his feline (猫咪的) friend made him restless and nervous. When it arrived, Ben got to read to Max again.
“What if someone adopts Max ” Ben asked Dad later. “I guess you’d read to a different cat,” Dad said. “But I don’t want a different cat. I wish we could adopt Max,” Ben said to Dad. He knew they couldn’t because Mom had allergies (过敏). Ben loved the cat so much that he even told his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Patel, about Max. “Max sounds like a special cat,” said Mrs. Patel.

38.考查非谓语动词。句意:这款游戏由位于深圳的初创公司Game Science开发,它吸引了玩家,并获得了评论家的赞誉,标志着许多人认为的中国游戏产业的一个“里程碑”。已有谓语动词“has fascinated”,“locate”与“a startup”之间是被动关系,即“公司位于……”,所以用过去分词located作后置定语,修饰“a startup”。故填located。

Week by week, Ben realized that reading seemed easier with Max’s company. The presence of the gray cat made him feel more relaxed and comfortable. He noticed that Max’s purring had a calming effect on him, allowing him to focus better on the words in front of him. Ben was amazed by how much he enjoyed reading aloud to Max. Still, he was surprised when Ms. Delgado gave him the Most Improved Reader award. Ben felt a sense of pride and accomplishment as he held the certificate in his hands. He couldn’t wait to show it to Max.
But on Saturday, Ben couldn’t find Max at the shelter. He looked around the room, hoping to catch a glimpse of his feline friend. However, Max was nowhere to be found. Ben’s heart sank as he realized that someone might have adopted Max. Just then, Mrs. Patel walked into the visitors’ room, carrying Max. “I’m adopting him,” Mrs. Patel said. “You can come over every day to read to him.” Hearing what Mrs. Patel said, Ben jumped with excitement and threw his arms around Mrs. Patel. Of course, he didn’t forget to hug Max tightly who gave a contented purr.
