It all began on Jan 3rd,when the injured whale was seen stranded on the shores of Haitang Bay in Sanya, Hainan Province. In early May, experts believed that Haitang was ready to return to Mother Nature. When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜).I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon (煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself my boys, my husband or, my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast. Each moment that you don't live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.

( )19.What does the underlined word “feast” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Sweet dream. B.Large meal. C.Happy story. D.Beautiful picture.

B.Eat to live, but not live to eat.
C.Neither food nor life should be wasted.
D.There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Have you ever seen pandas that aren't black-and-white Scientists have found that there are brown-and-white pandas living in China.
Scientists studied the genes(基因)of different pandas in the wild and they have found that pandas with brown-and-white coats are the result of changes in the natural environment. To understand what lies behind the special colour, the scientists studied Qizai,a brown panda in Qinling Giant Panda Research Centre. He is now the only brown panda in captivity(圈养).
When compared with hair from three black-and-white pandas, Qizai's brownish coat had fewer and smaller melanosomes(黑素体).What’s more, the study team found that the melanosomes were likely to be differently shaped.
The scientists collected genetic information about Qizai and his family tree(家谱).They studied the genetic information from Qizai's family members and compared it with the genetic information of 12 black-and-white pandas from the Qinling Mountains.
Though none of Qizai's family members had brown coats, the scientists found that his parents and son all had one copy of the recessive trait(隐性特质)on a certain gene, while Qizai had two copies. The scientists then studied another 192 black-and-white pandas. The gene change causing the brown coats was only found in two pandas from the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi.
Although it's not clear what caused the genetic change, scientists said it must be because of the environment of the Qinling Mountains, which is different from that of Sichuan.“For those who care about pandas, this is a great development,"said Wang, who worked in the mountains for 10 years.Wang said he was glad to see the scientists’ efforts in trying to work out this scientific question.

1. C. clocks
A. times(时间,抽象概念),B. daylights(日光),D. courses(课程;进程)均不符合习惯搭配。
2. D. late
3. A. noisily
如果选C. quietly(安静地),则与转折逻辑不符。
4. B. heard
A. seen(看见),C. felt(感觉),D. touched(触摸)均不适用。
5. D. passed away
A. flown away(飞走),B. moved away(搬走),C. ran away(跑掉)都不符合语境。
6. A. worse
B. better(更好),C. stronger(更强壮),D. harder(更艰难,常指事情或程度)均不符合常识。
7. B. pleasing
A. annoying(烦人的)与文意相反;C. sad(悲伤的)和D. strange(奇怪的)不符合上下文的情感变化。
8. D. comfort
A. support(支持),B. leave(离开),C. push(推)均不如`comfort`(安慰,抚慰)贴切。
9. C. remembered
A. imagined(想象),B. forgot(忘记),D. expected(期望)均不合逻辑。
10. C. love
A. influence(影响),B. argue(争论),D. enjoy(享受)都不符合“无条件的礼物”这一语境。
11. C. It was seriously hurt and lay on the shore.
第二段提到“the injured whale was seen stranded on the shores”,即受伤的鲸鱼搁浅在岸边。
12. D. It was rescued in the place.
第二段最后明确说明“They named it Haitang, after the Haitang Bay where it was found.”(它以被发现的海棠湾命名)。
13. B. The risk of the whale getting drowned.
“this”指代的就是前面提到的“the risk of turning over and drowning”。
14. B. Over 5 months
15. D. In a newspaper.
16. A. mix with noodles
第二段提到,奶奶会把剩下的土豆拿出来,“boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together.”
17. D. Because she poured the bacon oil into potatoes.
18. D. By planning the next week's food ahead of time.
第三段写道“I always planned the week's meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list”。
19. B. Large meal.
作者将生活比作一场“feast”(盛宴),与后文“Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning.”
20. C. Neither food nor life should be wasted.
A(活到老学到老)、B(吃饭是为了活着,但活着不是为了吃饭)、D(天下没有免费的午餐)均未准确概括核心思想。
21. D. He has two copies of the recessive trait.
第五段明确指出“Qizai had two copies(of the recessive trait)”。A(住在四川)错误,它在秦岭;B(是黑白熊猫)错误;C(有12个家庭成员)是对原文“compared it with...12 black-and-white pandas”的误解。
22. A. The results of the study.
23. B. Pandas' genetic information.
24. B. Supportive.
最后一段中,Wang说“For those who care about pandas, this is a great development.”
25. C. To offer knowledge of brown-and-white pandas.
A(保护建议)、B(环境保护重要性)、D(游览经历)均非主要目的。
26. D. Luckily, you are often able to turn things around.
27. B. Anything helps, even if it is taking a walk.
28. E. Sometimes it is better to respond rather than react.
29. F. They can bring you little bits of joy during an awful day.
30. A. Set up an emotional tool kit for next time.
31. E. Pingtan Impression
32. F. Awakening Lion
33. A. A Song to the Nature
34. B. Wing Chun
35. D. The Land of Lingnan
36. festivals
37. the

39. and
40. be found

41. happily
42. luckier
43. first

Dear David,
I was sorry to hear that you're feeling confused about balancing study and entertainment. Please don't worry too much; it's a common challenge that many students, including myself, face.
I went through a similar period last year. I found myself either buried in books for hours without a break or, conversely, spending too much time on video games and feeling guilty afterwards. I felt exhausted and my grades weren't improving.
To tackle this, I decided to create a strict but flexible schedule. I use a timer to divide my day into focused 50-minute study blocks, followed by a 10-minute short break to stretch or listen to music. For longer entertainment, like watching a movie or hanging out with friends, I schedule it for the weekend as a reward for completing my weekly goals. This method, known as time-blocking, has helped me immensely. The key is to be disciplined during study time and to truly enjoy your leisure time without guilt.
As a result, I not only managed to improve my efficiency in studying but also felt more relaxed and enjoyed my free time more. I believe you can find a balance that works for you. Maybe you could start by planning your next day the night before.
Hope my experience can be of some help. Looking forward to your good news!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
