The summer vacation season is an especially good time for a family farm stay in the U.S. because the weather is nice and farms around the country are filled with activities. Here are four of the best farm vacations where you can connect with nature and learn about farm life.
Stone and Thistle Farm
East Meredith, New York
Farm stay activities on Stone and Thistle Farm include grooming (刷洗) horses, milking goats, collecting eggs and holding baby chicks. Additional hands-on field and kitchen workshops are educational and family-friendly experiences focused on farming or cooking experiences (these are separate from the farm vacation and must be booked in groups of five or more).
BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch
Cat Spring, Texas
Situated in a 350-acre area, BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch is a working farm. Horseback riding, ranch games, fishing and feeding tours with farm animals are all part of the guest experiences. Another highlight is the safari experience, a guided tour where you can get close to wildlife animals.
Tabula Rasa Farms
Carlton, Oregon
Set among the rolling hills of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Tabula Rasa Farms lets families spread out and enjoy life on a farm. The two-bedroom, three-bathroom farmhouse comes with a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer. In summer, there’s a swimming hole behind the house along with many hiking trails. A short walk away is the working farm, with animals such as cows, pigs and ducks.
Homecoming Ranch
Nelsonville, Ohio
Farm stays at Homecoming Ranch honor both the livestock (家畜) and the land by sharing the working ranch’s sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices with guests. The 98-acre farm is home to Scottish Highland goats and chickens. Farm tours and interesting activities such as milking goats and collecting eggs and strawberries are a fun way to facilitate learning for kids.

As the first Chinese tennis player to win Olympic gold in singles, Qinwen Zheng said she could relax at last. The 21-year-old said with a smile, “Because I just made history.”
Zheng defeated Croatia’s Donna Vekic in the Paris women’s final on Saturday. Zheng said both her father and Chinese fans treated the Olympics as more important than Grand Slams (大满贯). “Me, too. You could see the strength and the hunger in my eyes were different from other tournaments that I played,” Zheng said.
After Zheng’s final point, she slid onto her back and laid on Roland Garros’ famous clay court looking up to the sky. The crowd in Paris on Saturday was filled with dozens of large and small waving Chinese flags and a ton of support for Zheng. After shaking Vekic’s hand, Zheng blew kisses to the crowd, then took one of the Chinese flags in the stands and draped (披) it over her shoulders. “All the Chinese fans were cheering for me,” she said, using it as motivation rather than disturbance in her head.
Zheng mentioned Li Na, the only Chinese player to win Grand Slam singles titles. “Since I was a child, Li Na has been an inspiration to me,” Zheng said. “I always want to become one that can inspire young kids to love tennis.”
In a tournament of upsets, world No. 7 Zheng was the final Top 10 player remaining. She defeated No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals, putting an end to Swiatek’s 25-match win streak at Roland Garros. “Beating Swiatek in Paris means a lot for me because I lost against her six times,” Zheng said.
Zheng has emerged as one of the next big names in tennis after a breakout year which included an appearance in her first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open in January. Zheng dominated Saturday’s match from the start, winning 10 of the first 12 points before building a 3-0 lead after an early break.
4. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Zheng’s fans brought much pressure to Zheng.
B. Zheng’s father has been very strict with Zheng.
C. Zheng has lost against Donna Vekic many times.
D. Zheng was eager for victory at the Paris Olympics.
5. How did Zheng react on the spot after winning the gold medal
A. She gave a hug to her opponent. B. She kissed the famous clay court.
C. She shook hands with the crowd. D. She celebrated with a Chinese flag.
6. What does Zheng expect to do according to the text
A. Beat Li Na in a match. B. Fuel kids’ passion for tennis.
C. Teach young kids to play tennis. D. Find a new coach for tournaments.
7 Why is Iga Swiatek mentioned in paragraph 5
A. To highlight Zheng’s surprising performance.
B. To indicate the tennis sport is less competitive.
C. To show Zheng’s continuous dominance in tennis.
D. To tell the reason why Zheng fell in love with tennis.
In AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the city of Pompeii and nearby areas in thick volcanic ash. Among them was Herculaneum, a small seaside resort (度假胜地) on the west coast of central Italy. Nearly 2,000 years later, the ancient city’s beach has been excavated (挖掘) and restored. It was opened to the public on June 19, 2024. “The restoration of the beach allows people to see the site from the same position as the ancient Roman people,” said Francesco Sirano, the director of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park.
The original beach featured black sand. However, to ensure wheelchair accessibility, local authorities replaced the sand with a dark-colored material that closely matches the original hue. Visitors can not only enjoy the restored beach but also explore the ancient city’s other impressive attractions, including remarkably well-preserved baths, an underground theater and luxurious homes.
Named after the Greek god Hercules, Herculaneum was once a popular holiday destination for Rome’s upper-class families due to its mild weather. The city lay hidden under more than 150 feet of ash until its accidental discovery in 1709. Excavations throughout the 18th and 19th centuries revealed buildings, art and other ancient artifacts. But very few human remains were discovered at first. This led researchers to believe that the residents had managed to escape before the volcanic ash covered the city completely.
However, subsequent digs in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s revealed over 300 skeletons (骨架). The remains of women, children and babies were found sheltered inside the boat houses. Those of men, both young and old, were discovered on the beach. Researchers believe the locals had escaped there in the hope of being rescued by boats.
Though it has been over 2,000 years since the eruption, excavations in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and surrounding areas continue to uncover new secrets. Recent digs have revealed a fantastic shrine (神殿) with blue walls and a gathering room with vivid paintings describing an ancient war, giving the viewers a feeling of being present on the scene.
8. What does the underlined word “hue” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Material. B. Architecture. C. Color. D. Size.
9. Why were the residents initially believed to have escaped the eruption
A. Escape routes were revealed. B. Historical accounts were restored.
C. Survived families were surveyed. D. Few human remains were found.
10. What did the researchers conclude from over 300 skeletons
A. Men and women were equally treated. B. The residents were trying to seek rescue.
C. There were many survivors of the eruption. D. Survival skills were remarkable at that time.
11. What does the text focus on
A. Unavoidable volcanic eruptions. B. Unique ancient Roman culture.
C. The excavation of an ancient city. D. The popularity of a holiday destination.
Atlantic spawning salmon (产卵鲑鱼) are making their way back to the spawning grounds in the waters of the Derwent River in Derbyshire, UK. This is the first time that salmon have returned to the waters of the upper river in 100 years.
While Atlantic salmon usually swim in the ocean, they first live in freshwater rivers — as upstream as they can go. They begin their life in an egg that typically hatches in January or February. The hatchlings typically spend a year or two at their birthplace before they swim downstream. Atlantic salmon go away for two years or more before returning to spawn.
But due to industrialization and intensive river management, the fish were driven out. The poor health of many of the UK’s rivers due to pollution, the increased extraction (提取) of water to be used for drinking and the removal of the bends in water that are necessary for the salmon to have places to feed and spawn have made it difficult for the fish to get back to their home rivers. Most importantly, the routes that the salmon historically swam have been blocked by many dams and weirs (大坝和堰), making it impossible for the salmon to return to spawn.
Luckily, in the summer of 2022, a project led by the Wild Trout Trust — a river conservation charity — began removing concrete weirs that blocked several rivers in Derbyshire.
Dr Tim Jacklin, a conservation officer for the Wild Trout Trust, said, “We have opened up a good ten kilometers of spawning habitat upstream, so that translates into hundreds of young salmon that will make their way downstream and to come back and spawn.” As expected, the removal of the weir at the Snake River now allows salmon to travel up the Derwent River.
It is hoped that within a few years, the rivers that have been essentially rewilded will continue to develop habitats with a large variety of species that are good for the salmon and for people as well. There is still a long way to go, but the return of the salmon to the Derwent River after 100 years is a sign that this conservation effort is already a success.
12. Where did Atlantic salmon use to start their life
A. In the deep ocean. B. In the upper freshwater rivers.
C. Along the downstream bends. D. Near downstream dams and weirs.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The barriers to spawning salmon. B. The causes of salmon’s extinction.
C. The difficulty of removing weirs. D. The necessity of monitoring salmon.
14. How does Dr Tim Jacklin sound
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Critical. D. Uninterested.
15 What does the author imply about conservation efforts
A. They should be research-based. B. They produce temporary results.
C. They are actually far from effective. D. They require long-term commitment.

Lucy touched the tiny gray whiskers (胡须) on a plastic mouse and her fingers were trembling with excitement. “Ms. Thompson will think it’s real!” she whispered to Mia recalling how their art teacher had nearly dropped her coffee last month when a mouse ran across the schoolyard.
Mia adjusted a mouse’s tail, saying, “But, what if she gets too scared ”
“Relax!” said Lucy. “It’s for April Fools’ Day! She laughed when we drew cat ears on her hat last week. This is just funnier!”
On April Fools’ Day, Lucy and Mia carefully placed some plastic mice under Ms. Thompson’ s sketchbook (素描册) in the art room before Ms. Thompson entered for a class. The girls were looking forward to witnessing the funny moment when Ms. Thompson saw the surprise. Soon Ms. Thompson stepped into the art room and greeted the students cheerfully. The two girls got excited and their eyes kept track of Ms. Thompson until she reached out for her sketchbook. The two girls looked at each other, waiting to together shout out “April Fools!”.
The scream filled the art room the moment Ms. Thompson spotted the plastic mice. Before the girls shouted, they saw Ms. Thompson standing frozen with a pale face. Other students burst into laughter but soon kept silent when they noticed their teacher’s shaking hands. A boy student rushed to pick up the plastic mice and throw them away.
Lucy’s stomach dropped. That wasn’t the playful reaction they’d expected. Ms. Thompson kept cleaning her glasses nervously and her cheerful voice was reduced to whispers. When Ms. Thompson dismissed the class early, leaving her sketchbook open, Lucy and Mia exchanged guilty glances (瞥).
During lunch break, Mia and Lucy had a talk. “We went too far,” Mia said. Lucy nodded with guilt. “We have to do something!” Mia said firmly. Lucy agreed, but she didn’t know what to do.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

I’m writing to tell you an exciting event I attended last Friday — the annual English Singing Competition held at our school. About 20 contestants from different grades participated, each showcasing their unique voices. The crowd cheered wildly, and the judges provided encouraging feedback, highlighting both vocal skills and emotional expression.
What impressed me most was Lily’s performance of You Raise Me Up, a well-known English song. Her soft yet powerful voice with emotions filled the competition hall and reminded me of my parents’ love for me.
How I wish you’d been there! Let me know about your school events!

【答案】
An idea struck Lucy as she saw cat drawings in Ms. Thompson’s sketchbook. The two girls decided to turn those plastic mice into a lovely cat. They found the abandoned plastic mice and worked immediately. After finishing their artwork, they wrote a note reading, “We’re sorry for what we have done. Those mice have been eaten by the cat. That’s a punishment for them. Punish us if you’re still angry. From Lucy and Mia.” After school, the two girls put the lovely plastic cat and the note beside Ms. Thompson’s sketchbook.
In the next art class, Ms. Thompson noticed the plastic cat and the note beside her sketchbook. Lucy and Mia held their breath as Ms. Thompson examined the plastic cat and read the note. Suddenly, Ms. Thompson chuckled — a warm sound like wind chimes. Holding up the plastic cat and displaying it to the whole class, Ms. Thompson announced, “Brilliant recycling!” Applause exploded in the art room. Lucy felt Mia squeeze her hand as Ms. Thompson winked at them. The earlier fear in Ms. Thompson’s eyes was replaced by twinkling pride.
