Mobile phone use among children has become a problem for the school this year. Several children have got mobile phones as Christmas gifts, and more students will want them.
Mary Bluett, an official, said mobile phone use is a distraction (分心的事) to students during school hours and it also gives teachers so much trouble in their classrooms. Teachers were also saying that sometimes students might use phone messages to deceive during exams.
She said some schools had tried to ban mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn’t get in touch with their children.
Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at school office. They also said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school: they were easy to lose and were a distraction from studies.

Small talk like “What do you have there Ice-cream ” or “The weather today is beautiful, isn’t it ” is not meaningful to some people. But in fact, scientists believe that it is more useful than it may appear to be.
A study by the University of Chicago found that people who talked to strangers enjoyed a better ride than those who sat in silence or kept playing with their phones.
In the study, scientists asked people at Chicago train stations to start to talk with other travelers. Most of them refused to do so at first, because they didn’t think they could get a friendly answer. But the result was opposite (相反的). Most strangers were happy to talk with others.
“People are social animals,” Nicholas Epley, one of the scientists said. “It turned out (证明) that they also wanted to know others.”
Besides making you happy, chatting with strangers can also help you feel connected with your environment. Some studies found that when people often smiled at, made eye contact (交流) with and talked with other people at public places, there was a better chance that they would have a sense of belonging (归属感) instead of feeling lonely.

Teenagers are full of imagination and creativity. Thomas Edison was a teenager when he invented a telegraphic instrument. Tharon Trujillo, 13, of California, is now famous for his new invention in the US.
Trujillo invented a safety device called “the Lock N Block Sliding Door Safety Gate”. It can help keep children and pets from falling through sliding-glass doors.
Trujillo has earned a lot of awards for his invention. Last November, he won the Thomas Edison Innovation Award. He was one of six young inventors introduced into the Student Inventor Hall of Fame in Ohio.
Trujillo was inspired to create the safety gate because of his younger sister. He was watching television one day when his baby sister fell through their open sliding-glass door.
His sister was fine, but “I told my dad there needs to be a safety gate for the sliding-glass door,” said Trujillo. He searched the Internet to see if there was such a device. No other safety gates on the market could fit in a sliding-glass door. So the boy decided to invent one himself.
The 13-year-old did something most children wouldn’t have the patience to do: He read a book on patenting and attended a patenting class at a college near his home. After three years of studies and hundreds of experiments, he finally made it. “It can actually save lives and help someone’s family,” Trujillo said.
Trujillo has his own advice for young people. “If you have an idea, follow it through because you never know where it’s going to take you in the future,” he said.

Three years ago, my husband and I started the “Farm Camp” program, We wanted city kids 46 (experience) what we had enjoyed and learned on our family farm. We host one or two families 47 a time. Most of them stay for a week. Every morning, I take the kids through a two-hour hands-on farm class.
There is a lot to learn. For example, I don’t expect a child to know how long it 48 (take) for a chick to hatch (孵化). But I’m often surprised when they don’t know 49 to pull a cart around a corner or climb over a gate.
Don’t get me wrong. I love educating kids and then cheering 50 (they) on when they manage to do these simple tasks 51 (independent). It’s just that, two generations ago, these skills were common knowledge. City kids today hardly get to touch real tools or take on difficult 52 (chore). These experiences can be unpleasant and even 53 (pain), so it’s understandable that parents want to shield (庇护) their children from them. The problem is, when parents do so, something necessary is lost.
The same is true when it comes to 54 more serious topic. In the beginning, death is never a topic to 55 (talk) about with the visitors. But my own kids, now 20 and 25, had faced the death of their beloved farm animals and survived, So I concluded that the “Farm Camp” kids can do the same. Now I just tell them that the young pigs will end up as a dish on the table.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters: eleven-year-old Amy and Lily who is two years younger. Recently, the Mark family became the focus (焦点) of the whole country after they completed 100 different outdoor activities in one year.
The Mark couple didn’t want their children to spend all their free time in front of the TV and become “couch tomatoes”. So about one year ago, the Marks decided that watching TV and playing computer games were not allowed. Instead, they made 100 tasks for the two girls to do outside. Although Mr. and Mrs. Mark are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all the activities to encourage their daughters. It turns out that the two sisters really had a good time joining activities.
Every holiday and weekend, whether it’s sunny, rainy or snowy, the Marks would set off to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing, climbing, skiing, and so on. The two little girls not only had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of skills from the activities.

1.D
2.B
【解析】句意:——“Would you please…”
第一句话指出“Would you please…”
3.A
too; to太……而不能……;so; that如此…… 去做……;such; that如此…… 根据“shy”和“speak in front of the class”之间的逻辑关系可知,太害羞导致不敢说话。故选A。
4.C
That’s bad太糟糕了;You’re welcome不客气;I’m afraid not恐怕不行;Sure当然可以。根据答句“They are so lovely.”
neither...nor... 根据“...my mom nor I...”

9.A
for对于,为了;of…… 此处是固定句型It’s+形容词+for/of sb.+to do sth.,表示“做某事对某人来说是……” 的”,其中It是形式主语,动词不定式to do sth. 故选A。
10.C

How to be a better teenager
Every student wants to be a better teenager. But what can we do to be better Here are my suggestions.
At school, we should listen to our teachers carefully in class and finish our homework on time. Besides, we are not allowed to get our ears pierced or bring mobile phones to school.
At home, we are supposed to help our parents with housework. Moreover, we are not supposed to talk back to our parents. It’s impolite. We are expected to communicate with them more often. Through communication, we can understand each other better.
In public places, we should offer our seats to the old. We can’t throw rubbish everywhere. What’s more, we’d better not listen to music that’s loud.
By following these suggestions, we can not only improve ourselves but also make the world a better place!
