La Tomatina 2024 — Information, Accommodation & Tickets
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bu ol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this “World’s Biggest Food Fight”.
What Happens at La Tomatina
At around 12 noon a number of trucks haul tomatoes into the centre of the town. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself.
After an hour the fighting ends. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors; so some people find water at the Bu ol River to wash themselves. Once flushed (冲洗), the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.
The Rules of La Tomatina
Do not rip other people’s Tshirts.
You must crush the tomatoes before throwing them as this reduces the impact.
As soon as you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
Wear closed shoes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. If you wear flipflops, you may get hurt.
Ensure that you always have something clean to wipe your eyes with. A good tip is to tuck your Tshirt into your shorts to keep the bottom part of your Tshirt clean and dry.
If you are planning to take pictures, bring a waterproof camera!
Do not miss the Palojabón — a greased pole with a Spanish ham at the top. Whoever can climb the pole and get the ham can keep it!

AIGenerated Art Wins Prize
Judges awarded him first place, which came with a $300 prize. Allen’s victory took a turn when he revealed online that he’d created his prizewinning art using Midjourney, an artificial intelligence (AI) program that can turn text descriptions into images. He says he also made that clear to state fair officials when he dropped off his submission called Thé tre D’opéra Spatial.
Colorado’s 150yearold state fair is held each summer in Pueblo, a town about 185 kilometers south of Denver. The fair’s submission guidelines do not directly mention AIgenerated art, but they define digital arts as “artistic practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process.”
The competition’s two judges say they were unaware that Allen had used AI to create his piece. But even if they had known, they still would’ve given him first place. They said they awarded the top prize based on the story Allen’s work told.
Allen created Thé tre D’opéra Spatial by entering various words and phrases into Midjourney, which then produced more than 900 versions for him to choose from. He selected his three favorites, then continued adjusting them in Photoshop until he was satisfied. He boosted their resolution using a tool called Gigapixel and printed the works on canvas. He entered all three pieces into the competition, and one of them won.
Allen said he believes the criticism of his work originates from artists’ fear that technology will one day become so advanced that they’ll be out of jobs.
In the meantime, as state fair spokesperson Olga Robak says, it’s bringing out “a broader conversation about how we decide what art is, and how we judge it appropriately.”

D. He followed guidelines for AIgenerated art.
26. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. How Allen created his works.
B. What AI technologies Allen used.
C. Why Allen chose to employ Midjourney.

How Parents Talk About Math Matters
A new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time.
Parents who make comments linking their children’s performance to personal characteristics like intelligence are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast, parents who link their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.
For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to their children’s math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were assessed in two waves across a year to measure their math motivation and achievement.
The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give process responses rather than person responses. In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can’t be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations for children give a combination of both responses.
Though more person responses—in particular, related to failure—are more likely to make children avoid harder math problems, exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and achieve less over time.
Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of response at home. Another recommendation for parents is to think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them to respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to enhance motivation.
28. Which of the following is an example of process response
A. You are a lucky dog.
B. Running is in your blood.
C. What works well for your study
D. Why are you such a math genius
29. What can be inferred from the study results
A. Parents prefer to give more process responses.
B. Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety.
C. Process responses help with children's math achievement.
D. Person responses can discourage children from learning math.
30. What do researchers advise parents to do
A. Stand up for their own beliefs.
B. Place limits on person responses.
C. Pay much attention to children's performance.
D. Pay little attention to children's math problems.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Strategy Children Adopt to Learn Math Helps

Engineering Mosquitoes to Fight Malaria
Mosquitoes carry malaria, which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering to make them into partners in the fight against the disease.
For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. “But that approach is shortterm,” says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, “because mosquitoes are very tough little insects, and their populations can quickly increase.”
Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach—making mosquitoes themselves into malariafighting fighters, which is completely different from traditional ways of controlling malaria.
To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen is a parasite that grows inside humans. It’s passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. “If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease,” he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a Herculean task.
To solve the problem, the team used a geneediting technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes.
It turned out the geneedited mosquitoes worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host.
James’ team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be done on an island or in another isolated location.
But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the nonprofit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that natural ways to reduce malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and use mosquitoes that can’t be controlled once sent into the wild ” she asks.
32. What can we know from the second and third paragraphs
A. Mosquitoes can reproduce quickly.
B. Mosquitoes can be easily controlled.
C. Mosquitoes have killed thousands of people.
D. Mosquitoes have been used to fight against malaria.
33. What does the underlined phrase “a Herculean task” in Para 4 mean
A. A hard job.
B. A great comfort.
C. A narrow escape.
D. A key factor.
34. What is environmentalists' attitude towards this new approach
A. Unconcerned.
B. Supportive.
C. Negative.
D. Positive.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Preventing Malaria with a New Vaccine
B. Curing Malaria with Geneedited Mosquitoes
C. Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations
D. Controlling Malaria by Engineering Mosquitoes' Genes
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Saying no can be difficult for many people. 36
However, learning how to say no and feel good about it is an important skill. Here are some strategies for actually doing it in a way that leaves us feeling good about our decision.
One of the most important aspects of saying no is being honest and direct in your communication. 37
Being honest and direct in your communication helps to avoid misunderstandings and ultimately leads to better relationships.
Using “I” statements can help to take the focus off the other person’s request. For example, rather than saying “I can’t help you move this weekend,” you might say, “I need to take some time for myself this weekend and won’t be able to help you move.” 38
39 For example, if a colleague asks you to take on an extra project, you might say, “I’m not able to take on this project right now, but I can provide support later.” Doing so helps to soften the blow of your no. Besides, it shows you’re still willing to help.
Setting clear boundaries for yourself can make saying no much easier. 40
Additionally, it prevents overcommitting and helps maintain a healthy balance in your life.
In conclusion, learning how to say no and feel good about it helps us protect our time and energy, prioritizes our own needs and desires, and maintains healthy boundaries.
选项:
A. It can feel uncomfortable and even guilty.
B. We can say no with confidence and peace of mind.
C. It helps maintain our physical and emotional balance.
D. If you want to help, you can offer an alternative to the request.
E. Instead of staying away from the issue, simply state your reasons.
F. In this way, you can shift your focus on your wishes and disires.
G. Knowing your top things to do and limits helps you refuse irrelevant requests with confidence.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分 15 分)
Dear Ms Evans.
I am Li Hua, the president of the Students' Union of our school. I am writing to suggest our school (should) start a skateboarding club for the students.
With a growing number of students skateboarding in our school, I think it is a good idea to start a skateboarding club. Firstly, skateboarding brings adventure and achievement, making school life more colorful and lively. Secondly, as a good place to exercise and relax, a skateboarding club can benefit students and help them stay healthy and reduce stress. Lastly, this club can invite professional skateboarders to teach the students some skills, which will help them avoid injuries while they're skateboarding.
I sincerely hope that you will take my advice into consideration. I'd appreciate it if you could reply soon.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
