The 97-year-old botanist, Margaret Bradshaw, is the chief caretaker of Teesdale’s rarest flowers. “Everything about Teesdale is unique,” says Bradshaw with pride — and the authority of someone who has just written a 288-page book on the subject. Bradshaw has been recording rare plants here since the early 1950s and has witnessed great decreases. Her data was the first to prove that — and the need to do something about it.
The main reason for the decrease of these plants is an unusual one. The number of sheep in Teesdale had been reduced by half by 2000, as the uplands were generally believed there were too many sheep. Bradshaw says while sheep are hunted in some upland areas, reducing herding in Teesdale has been destructive. Longer grass overshadows the delicate (娇嫩) flowers, taking away the light they need to grow. As a result of her findings and her work with farmers who herd the land — as well as Natural England, which manages it — sheep numbers are increasing and the timing of herding is being carefully managed. This has led to the partial recovery of some plants.
At 93, she set up Teesdale Special Flora Research and Conservation Trust to record rare plants. A keen horse rider, at 95, she did a 55-mile horse journey across Teesdale, raising almost $ 10,000 for the Trust. When asked about the secret to longevity, “Just keep going,” she says.
“Keep at it. Don’t sit down and just watch TV.”
“I recognise I’m getting older and I’ve been trying to get more people to take over and do the records. They don’t believe I won’t be here forever,” Bradshaw says. Despite Bradshaw’s guardianship of this land, and the love and energy she has put into saving it, the future here is unknown. The last words of her book speak to this endless loss. “This is our heritage, this unique plant species, mine and yours,” she writes. “In spite of trying, I have failed to prevent its decrease, now it is up to you.”
4. What is Margaret Bradshaw’s main work with the rare plants?
A. Writing a book. B. Preventing their decrease.
C. Collecting their data. D. Directing farmers to grow plants.
5. What contributed to the reduction of rare plants in Teesdale?
A. Not enough sheep. B. Lack of fund.
C. Poor management. D. Too many sheep.
6. What can we learn from Bradshaw’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Unity brings strength. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Youthful at heart, regardless of age. D. Advance what the forerunners began.
7. Which might be a suitable title for the text?
A. Teesdale: Home to Rare Plants B. Battling for Teesdale’s Wildflowers
C. Bradshaw: A 97-Year-Old Gardener D. Exploring Teesdale’s Unique Plants
C

In the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!
Not all past predictions have been proven wrong. A few of them have been surprisingly accurate. Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the Internet — years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn't consider how people would want to use the technology or whether people really needed these high-tech things in their lives or not. Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past.
Robot helpers
Where's the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere, of course. And he's probably not coming anytime soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other working environments.
Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes.
So why hasn’t it happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy. And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.
Telephones of tomorrow
In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet.
Why? The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious: people desire for privacy. Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just stepped out of the shower? Probably not — it could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? It’s not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination. Keep watching the news or perhaps the sky outside your window to see what the future will bring.
8. Robot helpers haven't been used in most people’s homes because .
A. using this kind of robot at home is simply a waste of time and money
B. this kind of robot hasn’t been developed yet
C. people find it difficult to control this kind of robot
D. this kind of robot won’t bring people practical use
9. The underlined phrase “caught on” in Paragraph 6 probably means .
A. become popular B. become enjoyable
C. come into sight D. come to life
10. What does the author think of the flying car?
A. It is too difficult to imagine.
B. It is too crazy to realize.
C. It is likely to appear in the future.
D. It has been the focus of the news.
11. The passage mainly deals with______.
A. predictions that catch our imagination
B. predictions that haven’t come true
C. new technology that can benefit our life
D. new technology that is in wide use
D
The era of intelligent home is on the way... A smart pet-flap based on lift door technology that lets pets in — but keeps foxes out —has been made public at the world’s largest tech conference. The MyQ Pet Portal is the latest tool to promise to revolutionise petkeeping.
For $2,999 owners get a new door featuring sliding doors that are unnoticeable when closed. The family pet is equipped with a Bluetooth collar that sends a signal to the sensor hidden in the door which then informs the owner.
A smart phone app allows the owner to choose whether to open the door, with a video and audio stream (音频流) enabling the owner to see and talk to their pet. “ It is a solution for homeowners who want to keep the security and the appearance of their home in good condition while providing their pets with the freedom to play on demand,” the company claims. MyQ is owned by Chamberlain Group, a US company specialising in garage doors.
The door comes with an “auto-close and lock system” that triggers after the dog goes through to ensure that no other pets or foxes can use it. There is also the option to let a dog open the door automatically when it approaches, without the need for the owners’ approval.
Samsung revealed a robot called Bot Handy that can, it is claimed, pick up laundry, load the dishwasher, set the table, pour wine, and fetch drinks. There was also an app or voice-controlled bathtub from Kohler, a US maker of bathroom products, which attempts to make the spa experience at home possible. The tub, costing up to $8,700, can connect to voice assistants such as Alexa that will tell it to run the water, adjust the temperature or release scents.
12. What is the MyQ Pet Portal based on?
A. The bluetooth technology.
B. The lift door technology.
C. The latest robot technology.
D. The voice-controlled technology.
13. How does the pet dog go through the door?
A. By pushing the door itself.
B With a sensor in the collar.
C. By sending a signal to its owner.
D. With the auto-close and lock system.
14. How is the passage developed?
A. By comparing data.
B. By analyzing the reasons.
C. By giving typical examples.
D. By presenting various ideas.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The revolution of keeping pets.
B. The advertisement for sliding doors.
C. The application and promotion of a smart app.
D. The introduction to home intelligent products.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I am a high school student, and I’ve always been shy and quiet. Speaking up, especially in front of my classmates, has always been difficult for me. In class, I tend to avoid the teacher’s look and rarely volunteer answers. I find myself more comfortable observing from the sidelines, quietly taking notes and participating only when absolutely necessary.
So, when our teacher assigned a group project to create a mind map (思维导图) for a travel journal, I felt completely lost. It seemed like a huge task, and I had no idea where to begin. The thought of working with a group and contributing my ideas was difficult.
We were supposed to work in groups of four, and I wasn’t sure if I could contribute enough to make it a success. I was stressed by the idea of cooperating with others, especially since I wasn’t sure whether I had the creative skills they would expect for something like a mind map.
My friend Alice noticed my hesitation and immediately invited me to join her group. She said, “You should join Chris, Ryan, and me. You’re so creative, and I know that you’ll bring something great to the table.” She even mentioned how I had helped her before by creating small stories to memorize words, and how my creativity always surprised her.
I was touched by her faith in me, but despite her encouragement, I was still unsure. I didn’t feel confident about my ability to contribute to the group, especially when it came to something as creative as a mind map. I feared that my ideas might not be good enough or that I would let the team down. The thought of standing out in front of everyone with my contributions felt challenging. But Alice insisted, gently encouraging me to give it a try, promising me that we could work together and that my creativity would be valuable.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After a bit of hesitation, I finally agreed to join.

“I recognise I’m getting older and I’ve been trying to get more people to take over and do the records. They don’t believe I won’t be here forever,” Bradshaw says. Despite Bradshaw’s guardianship of this land, and the love and energy she has put into saving it, the future here is unknown.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】
After a bit of hesitation, I finally agreed to join. Alice, Chris, and Ryan were welcoming, and we dove into the project. As we brainstormed, I felt more confident. Initially, I was hesitant to speak up, but Alice’s encouragement helped me push through. I suggested ideas for the mind map, including how to organize the sections. The others liked my suggestions, and I realized I had more to contribute. By the end, we had a solid plan, and I felt proud. When our teacher announced we would present, Alice turned to me and said, “You should present with me. You’ve done great work.” Despite my nervousness, I agreed, knowing with Alice by my side, I could manage the presentation.
The next class, Alice and I presented our group’s mind map to the class. As she confidently explained how we had organized our ideas, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. When it was my turn, I took a deep breath and began explaining the sections I had worked on, focusing on using a timeline to connect the events in the travel journal. Alice highlighted my contributions, emphasizing that the creative idea was mine. The class nodded in approval, and our teacher smiled, offering positive feedback. Hearing the praise, I felt a rush of pride and relief. It wasn’t just about the project — it was about stepping out of my comfort zone and realizing I had something valuable to offer, something I had never fully recognized before.
