On a gap year programme abroad after high school, the experience can be designed to benefit your exact interests and goals. You can explore a career you’re interested in, like medicine or law, and add relevant work experience to your resume (简历). We have options for students who’ve put off their university acceptance, and for those who don’t feel they’re ready for further education just yet.
There’s a lot you can get involved in by volunteering abroad on your gap year. You can protect endangered ecosystems and wild animals on a Conservation Project. Or, give children the educational support they desperately need on a Childcare Project. If you’re eager to be more independent, we recommend joining Flexi Trips to personalize your gap year programme.

Deb Alma has opened a new branch of the Poetry Pharmacy (诗歌药房) on London’s famous Oxford Street, offering literary aid for problems with emotions (情绪) like broken hearts, sorrow, or anxiety. The shop provides comfort and encouragement through poetry, and other books, reflecting poetry’s historical role in dealing with deep emotions during events like weddings and breakups.
Though uncommon in UK education, poetry’s popularity has grown recently due to “instapoetry” (网络诗歌), with writers like Rupi Kaur and Kae Tempest attracting young readers. Poetic interest further increased with a new translation of Homer and contributions from artists like Lana Del Rey.
The London Poetry Pharmacy, located above a Lush store, features a collection of colorful books and a fun arrangement of “prescriptions” (处方) for feelings like depression and anxiety. This unique idea has become a big hit on social media, bringing in many different people who usually wouldn’t read poetry.
Alma, who rediscovered her passion for poetry during her 40s while studying for a creative writing MA, started by touring as the “Emergency Poet” in a 1950s ambulance, giving out poems throughout the UK. She avoided offering advice, instead gifting carefully chosen words.
Even though people were worried at first, the Poetry Pharmacy’s special ideas and charm have gotten a lot of attention. The shop is very popular on Instagram, starting discussions about whether easy-to-read instapoetry is better than traditional poems.
Dr. J T Welsch from York University was doubtful about instapoetry at first. However, he now uses it in his classes because he sees it helps make poetry easier to understand and broadens what poetry can be. Alma’ s aim is to get poetry closer to those seeking meaning in a busy world.
Both Poetry Pharmacy locations try to create a sense of community through poetry, where visitors connect with poems in a comfortable and personal setting. Right now, the lively Poetry Pharmacy shows her big dream, representing a cultural center in the middle of the city.
4. What is special about “Poetry Pharmacy”?
A. It uses books and poems to lift people’s spirits.
B. It only sells academic and classic poetry books.
C. It explores the history of poetry and literary works.
D. It offers medical treatments for emotional problems.
5. Which leads to the rising popularity of poetry?
A. Government’s support for literature. B. The increased sales of digital books.
C. The help of social media and artists. D. The comeback of ancient traditions.
6. What kind of person is Alma?
A. Creative and thoughtful. B. Responsible and honest.
C. Hardworking and brave. D. Determined and outgoing.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. One is never too old to learn. B. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Think out of the box for solutions.

In 1985, lionfish were seen in Florida for the first time. It was really a surprise because Florida is half a world away from their native place in the Pacific Ocean. 15 years later, the lionfish had spread uncontrollably and become a danger for reefs (珊瑚礁) and their neighbors. Scientists aren’t 100% sure, but most probably lionfish found their way to the waters because of their beauty and some thoughtless aquarium (水族馆) owners who most probably released the fish into the ocean in Florida.
They are deadly to their surroundings because of their hunger. Lionfish can eat an impressive 90% of their body weight every day. And the lionfish isn’t picky. More than 100 species are on its menu. With such a large need, lionfish take food away from commercially profitable fishes, affecting local communities that depend on this kind of fishing. Besides, there are more females than males, and they lay more than 2 million eggs every year. This has knock-on effects on the local underwater wildlife. As, for example, when lionfish eat too many cleanerfish. Cleanerfish eat parasites (寄生虫) off a lot of species, and parasites can cause diseases that lead to less diversity (多样性) in the ocean, so the cleanerfish’s work is especially important for the health of a reef’s population.
Scientists are trying to control the damage by calling on people to put them on their dinner table. Lionfish may be the perfect invaders, but they have one weakness— the way they taste. In addition, several ocean protection groups are running removal projects in which divers and fishermen are encouraged to hunt lionfish. But still, there’s a chance that all these activities are just tackling the tip of the iceberg. We can only see the effects of them in shallow water. But lionfish have been found as deep as 300 meters. Nobody knows how big the populations are down there.
8. What likely brought lionfish to Florida?
A. Climate change B. Human activity.
C. Ocean movement. D. Wildlife protection.
9. What is an effect that lionfish have on the ocean?
A. Causing the reefs to disappear.
B. Eating all the fish in the ocean.
C. Taking food away from people.
D. Breaking the ocean living system.
10. Which best explains the phrase “tackling the tip of the iceberg” in the last paragraph?
A. Getting straight to the point.
B. Solving the problem completely.
C. Touching the surface of the problem.
D. Being totally useless to solve the problem.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Hungry fish are increasing fast
B. Act now to protect ocean wildlife
C. Ocean wildlife are in great danger
D. Lionfish take over the ocean in Florida
D
Whether it’s biting your nails, or going to bed at 2 a. m., we all have those annoying habits we just can’t seem to kick. But have you ever wondered why these bad habits keep winning the battle against your best efforts and intentions?
Humans are creatures of habit, and our brains love doing things the same way. That’s why bad habits grow easily in the repeated actions like absentmindedly reaching for a cigarette. Another reason why your bad habits keep winning is that they often provide a quick dopamine (多巴胺) fix, creating a desire that keeps you coming back for more. Think of the immediate relaxation from a cigarette or mindless snacking. The payoff for doing these things is quick and easy, which is exactly what makes them so hard to resist (抵抗).
So what can you do? There are two main problems with breaking bad habits. First, it’s not as enjoyable as giving in to them. When we try to resist, there’s no pleasure, no dopamine and therefore no encouragement to keep doing so. Rather than trying to remove them entirely, try to replace them with something healthier instead, or create a reward system for yourself to introduce the positive behaviour.
Second, a habit is often an unconscious (无意识的) action, so making it conscious changes it into a choice. You’d better start with an intentional action. Accepting your actions without judgement helps you stay apart from the emotions that keep you tied to those habits, like guilt, shame and dissatisfaction. This increased awareness will lead you to make more intentional choices and break the automatic cycle of bad habits.
Knowing the psychology behind why your bad habits keep winning hopefully gets you to make more conscious, positive choices, and change, and build the foundation for lasting behavioural change.
12. How does the writer introduce the topic?
A. By listing numbers. B. By raising a question.
C. By voicing an opinion. D. By explaining a reason.
13. What makes bad habits hard to break?
A. People’s desire to keep fit. B. Quick and easy satisfaction.
C. Little knowledge of their effects. D. People’s unwillingness to change.
14. What is a problem with breaking bad habits?
A. It is painful. B. It is fearful.
C. It takes much time. D. It calls for wisdom.
15. What can help kick a bad habit according to the passage?
A. Control feelings. B. Judge your actions.
C. Make active efforts. D. Turn to others for help.

Each Role Matters
The annual English play was an eagerly awaited event at the senior school. This year, the drama club decided to put on A Midsummer Night’ s Dream and among the actors was a freshman named Alex, who had always dreamed of being the star of the show.
From the very beginning, Alex struggled with the mind of being a supporting actor. He was given the role of Puck, a character he viewed as less exciting than the leads. “Why can’t I be one of the main characters?” Alex sadly told his friend, Jamie, who was the drama club president. “I have talent, and I want to shine!” Jamie tried to comfort Alex, explaining the importance of every role in a play. “Each character serves a purpose, Alex. Puck is charming and playful. He adds depth to the story. Without him, the play wouldn’t be the same.”
Despite Jamie’s words, Alex remained unpleasant during the early rehearsals. He played without any excitement, which caught the attention of the director, Ms. Parker. She decided to talk to him and called him aside. “Alex, you’re talented, but you’re not giving your best.” she said. “You’re part of a team, and every member is important. Value your role and make the most of it.”
This conversation gave rise to a change in Alex. He began to look at the script differently, studying Puck’s character more closely. He noticed the importance of Puck’s interactions with the other characters. Slowly, Alex’s attitude changed. He started to take his role more seriously, attending every rehearsal full-heartedly.
On the night of the big day, Alex stood backstage , in eagerness.

An Autumn Hike to Nanshan Park
Last Saturday, our class organized an autumn hike to the picturesque Nanshan Park.
We started at 8 a.m. and followed a scenic 10-kilometer route. Along the route, we admired the breathtaking view of the city beyond. Laughter and songs lifted our spirits when we felt tired. After the long challenging trip, we camped at the park, where we had a picnic together.
The hike refreshed my mind and soul, and I felt a deeper connection with both nature and my classmates. This unforgettable bonding experience left us longing for more outdoor adventures.
47. 参考范文:
On the night of the big day, Alex stood backstage, in eagerness. He looked at his reflection in the mirror and whispered, “You can do this, Puck.” As he took the stage, his movements were confident, his voice clear and playful, embodying the role of Puck. In no time, he became the character, engaging smoothly with his fellow actors. The audience roared with laughter at his funny motions. Alex felt a rush of pride at the response of the audience. He was no longer the actor who hated his role; he was Puck, the heart of the play’s magic.
When the play ended, Ms. Parker gave Alex a bear hug. “You were brilliant, Alex. You brought Puck to life.” Alex’s smile was brighter than ever with the director’s praise. The play was a huge success, and the cast was celebrated with thunderous applause. Alex learned a valuable lesson about teamwork and the value of every role. Apart from a success for the drama club, it was also a personal victory for Alex, who had discovered that acceptance and hard work could lead to the most rewarding performances.
