If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right But 1 do other people think about your generation (同辈人)
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the 2 in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (自拍照) to become successful in 3 life or “IRL” as you would say
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (宠坏的) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many people born in the 1990s and 2000s were 4 by “helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extra-curricula activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers 5 when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a 6 Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are used to working with powerful digital (数码的) tools that allow them to work on their own as well as team up with others. 7 , because they could learn about people and cultures around the globe from an early age, they developed a greater understanding of diversity (多样性) and the importance of finding their own identities (身份). When facing difficulties, they are the first to step forward and seem to be more 8 to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their 9 , taking part in activities like elderly care, neighbourhood cleanup, first aid and safety training. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s reason to be 10 about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud).

Unlike parents who may get angry sometimes, AI can help with homework and always stay calm. Do you think AI is a better teacher than parents
I believe parents are better teachers than AI. First, our parents are closer to us. When we feel worried, they can give us emotional support. Also, our parents have more real-life experience than AI. With their help, we can deal with stress better and develop a more positive attitude (积极的态度) toward life. Although AI provides perfect answers, I would still choose my parents as my teachers. They not only help with my studies but also offer love and support in difficult times. AI is a great tool, but it can never replace parents. Song Zexi, 14
I think AI is a better teacher than parents. Unlike parents, AI always stays calm and patient. This helps families avoid arguments, which not only improves the parent-child relationship but also makes learning more efficient (高效的). AI is also a smart tool that can quickly collect a lot of information and offer more accurate (准确的) and diverse (多样的) ways to solve study problems. Besides, AI is available anytime and never gets tired, making learning easier and more convenient. Miao Mucheng, 14
When I have trouble with math, AI gives me step-by-step help without losing patience. That makes me feel good. However, parents have something special. They love and care for us in ways that go beyond studying. My mother sometimes gets angry, but after she yells (吼叫), she also makes me feel better with hugs and kind words. She understands my strengths and weaknesses from everyday life and always thinks about my feelings. In the end, although AI is stable (稳定的) and helpful for studying, it can never take the place of my parents, who play an important role in every part of my life. Li Yufan, 15

Although research shows how good it is for children to play outside, they still spend more time staying indoors. In fact, outdoor play has a positive (积极的) influence on children’s development.
Over the last fifteen years, schools have started to realize the importance of outdoor time. It leads to the development of many programmes that take learning outside the classroom. One of these programmes is Forest School which has increased in popularity over recent years.
Forest School is an outdoor learning programme and pays much attention to outdoor play in wooded spaces. In the early 1990s, a group of English educators went on a trip to Denmark. Using filters (滤镜) is common among young people on social media. Filters can make people look more beautiful and even add funny effects (效果). However, TikTok is making some changes.
In November 2024, TikTok said that users under 18 won’t be able to use beauty filters that change their features ways makeup can’t. But don’t worry funny filters like animal ears will still be allowed.
Beauty filters can hurt people’s mental health, according to the BBC. A UK-based group called 5Rights found that 34 percent of girls aged 11 to 21 won’t post a photo unless they edit (编辑) how they look. Another report from Dove, a beauty brand, found that 48 percent of girls who often edit their photos feel worse about their bodies.
Seeing these edited looks all the time can make it hard for young people to tell what’s real. They might start to think that perfect, edited images are normal, which can change how they see the world.
The ban (禁令) only works if users have accounts (账号) with their real ages. However, not everyone under 18 has given TikTok their real age. To help with this, TikTok is testing smart technology to look at things like “happy birthday” messages to guess ages.
Other steps taken to protect youths online:
Australia: The country has decided that kids under 16 shouldn’t use social media. They want young people to spend more time outdoors and enjoy the real world.
Meta: The social media company has introduced “teen accounts” on Instagram. These accounts allow parents to control their children’s online activities. For example, parents can set limits (限制) on app usage during nighttime hours.
China: In 2019, China made new rules for tech companies to create a “youth mode (青少年模式)” for online games and media. It limits how much time kids can spend online and only shows things that are right for their age.

Nowadays, teenagers’ consumption concepts (消费观) and lifestyles are changing quietly. With the development of society, teenagers no longer buy expensive things blindly. Instead, they are paying more attention to the value for money of products. This new way of consumption is called reverse (反向的) consumption, which actually encourages people not to waste money.
While traditional consumption always makes people buy the new expensive products, reverse consumption leads people to think about the quality of products. This has become popular among teenagers and influenced their buying decisions in all areas. After all, teenagers don’t make money by themselves, and they have to ask their parents for money. So they should think twice about what they are going to buy.
More and more teenagers have begun to care about the harm of blind consumption to the environment. They have realized that blind consumption not only causes waste, but also causes environmental pollution. So, they are trying to reduce its influence on the environment through this new way of consumption. They’re choosing products that are environmentally friendly.
What’s more, reverse consumption is influencing people’s understanding of a better life. Young people value their own satisfaction more than the price of products, and they believe that a meaningful life can be achieved through reverse consumption. For example, they may choose to spend money on experience such as traveling or cultural activities rather than spending much time watching TV. In a word, reverse consumption -is quite different from the traditional consumption of buying things.

This is a tale of a lonely old woman. She lived in the white North. There, the night is long in winter and the day is long in summer.
The old woman lived alone in a small village. The villagers took good care of her, but she was still unhappy. She wanted a child of her own.
One winter day, she walked out and saw a small white animal on the ice. It was a baby bear. The bear looked small and felt very cold. The old woman spoke softly to the bear, “Poor little e with me.” Then she carried him home.
Inside her house, the old woman held the bear close until he was warm. She touched him gently and sang to him softly. He felt comfortable in her arms. From that day, when the old woman ate, she fed the little bear from her hand. When she slept, the bear slept beside her. They were a family now. The village children loved the bear too. They played together.
Time passed quickly and the bear grew big and strong. One day, some villagers said to him, “Little Bear, go hunting with us. We’ll teach you how to hunt.” The bear followed them. Soon the bear became a better hunter than the villagers.
When the weather was bad, everyone stayed indoors. Then the bear went out into the snow and brought home enough food for the whole village. The old woman felt proud of him.
One day, some villagers said to the old woman, “The bear has grown big and strong enough. He is a good hunter now. You’d better let him go back to the wild.”
In the following days, the old woman was quiet, thinking. She thought aloud, “The bear belongs to the wild. I should let him go.”
Finally, she said to the bear, “It’s time for you to leave. Be safe. Be free.” She put her arms around his neck. Her tears ran into his fur. She was heartbroken.
The bear walked slowly away from her and looked back again and again. Then he disappeared. When darkness fell, the old woman still stood there. Once more, she was alone.
A long time passed. The winter came again. One day, the old woman stood at the same place for a long time. The wind blew snow around her face. Suddenly, the white bear appeared and ran to her.

Puberty is the stage of life when young people leave childhood and head into adulthood. It is a difficult process for teenagers because it has an effect on both their minds and bodies. They need to understand what is going on with their bodies, how to deal with those changes and how to start taking responsibility for themselves.
A young person may begin puberty at 8, while another may not start puberty until 14 or 15. In general, girls start puberty two years before boys do. For both girls and boys, it is usually complete by the age of 18.

Primary and middle schools across Chinese cities 71 (increase) the time of class breaks from 10 to 15 minutes since the start of the autumn term to encourage outdoor activities among both students 72 teachers.
Traditionally, schools in China have had 10-minute breaks between 73 (class), which provided limited time for students, especially those in multistory (多层) buildings, to join in outdoor activities. Schools also prevented students from 74 (leave) classrooms during breaks due to their safety.
However, students are now encouraged 75 (walk) out of the classroom and breathe the fresh air. Students can use this time to play games with friends or take 76 short walk around the school.
At the same time, some schools have already extended break times to help students 77 (relax). For example, some schools have set up sports equipment areas where students can play basketball, badminton, and other games. Some schools have set up art corners. Students can draw 78 (free) there. Others have organized reading corners where students can read books and magazines.

In recent years, we have learned a lot about Yingge dance from social media. Its exciting performance at the 2025 Spring Festival Gala also 81 (impress) many people.
This winter vacation, I went back to my hometown, Shantou, a place known for its rich culture and traditions. Luckily, I had the chance to watch Yingge dance up close. I stood on the street with many locals and visitors, 82 (wait) for the performers to arrive. Soon, a red flag with the words “Shengqian Yingge Team” led the way, followed by a big group of 83 (energy) dancers. The performers wore bright, colorful clothes and carried wooden sticks. I heard the sound of gongs (锣) and sticks. They moved their sticks skillfully, making them seem like part of their bodies. Sometimes, they shouted, making the performance even 84 (excited). The mix of music, movement, and sound brought joy to everyone.
The biggest surprise was seeing my uncle dance! After the show, he told me that Yingge Dance came from old stories about heroes. We made the dance faster and the clothes more colorful to interest young people. I realized they weren’t just keeping the tradition, but also changing it for today. That’s why Shantou now has over 50 Yingge teams, many with 85 (teenage) members. By mixing old and new ideas, Yingge dance helps people love their culture and feel connected. Traditions can stay alive if we pass them on in creative ways.
