Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice increased quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
8. Animals are important to us mainly because ________.
A. they give us a source of food B. they are beautiful and lovely
C. they keep the balance of nature D. they give us a lot of pleasure
9. What has happened to the animals on the earth?
A. Only a few animals have disappeared.
B. Many kinds of animals have died out.
C. About 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.
D. All kinds of animals are in danger.
10. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. People care much about animals because they need them.
B. Once a certain kind of animals is gone forever, there will never be any more.
C. Killing all rats and mice may cause some problems.
D People must not kill any animals.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals.
B. Animals in danger will not be killed any more.
C. The number of some animals in danger will increase.
D. Animals in danger will be kept away from people.
D
Thanks to this new hands-free suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage may soon become a thing of the past. Designed by an Israeli company NUA Robotics, this “smart” suitcase will follow you everywhere you go.
The carry-on suitcase, currently a prototype (雏形), connects to a smart phone app via Bluetooth. It has a built-in camera sensor that can “see” you and follow you around on flat surfaces like airport floors. It comes with an anti-theft alarm to prevent someone carrying it away when you’re not looking and it has a backup battery that you can use to charge all your devices.
“It can follow and carry things for people around while communicating with their smart phone, and avoiding obstacles,” explained Alex Libman, founder of NUA Robotics. “We’re combining sensor network, computer vision, and robotics. So if you download our app, press the follow-me button, the luggage recognizes the specific user and knows to follow and communicate.”
NUA is still testing the device and trying to improve features like speed and customization (定制), but they hope to make the suitcase available to customers in a year’s time. If it proves successful, they want to use the Bluetooth pairing technology to automate lots of other devices, like shopping carts at the supermarket. These devices are especially meant to be useful to the physically disabled and elderly. “Any object can be smart and robotic,” Libman said, “We want to bring robots into everyday life.”
The Israeli tech company made it clear that the finished product will look just like a regular suitcase. They’re planning to partner with a carry-on luggage maker, since the device that makes it “smart” weighs just 2.5 pounds and can be fitted on old-fashion luggage.
With NUA’s smart suitcase, carrying round heavy luggage isn’t a burden. But how their invention will handle tough obstacles like stairs? It will be interesting to wait.
12. Why can this carry-on suitcase follow you?
A. Because there is a camera sensor inside.
B. Because there exists an anti-theft alarm.
C. Because it can recognize your smell.
D. Because a battery plays a key part.
13. According to the passage, the “smart” suitcase _______.
A. can go everywhere
B. is on sale now
C. can make our hands free during traveling
D. was designed by Alex Libman
14. What can we learn about NUA?
A. It is an Israeli tech company producing mobile phones.
B. It has improved the features of the device.
C. It will make the suitcase available to customers in a month.
D. It wants to bring more smart and robotic devices into everyday life.
15. Where does the article probably come from?
A. A text-book. B. A website.
C. A biography. D. A poster.

任务型阅读
War broke out in our house in late July with less than a month to go before my first day of college. It was a battle of wills, my mom’s and my own, over which school I was to attend. She wanted me to attend the well-known nursing school to which I was originally accepted, but I wanted to go to a small, private writing college with a student body of fewer than 300 students. Every night for two weeks, we argued, yelled and gave silent treatments until both parties went to bed with regrets and frustrations.
It was mostly my fault. Since my junior year of high school, I had aimed at being a nurse. I took all the required courses, applied for nursing scholarships, and even worked as a volunteer in my town’s local hospital. My goal, or so I told everyone, was to treat the sick and heal the hurt.
Yet, as graduation and college neared, I gradually found it was not what I was meant to do for the rest of my life. I could picture myself in providing wound care, making rounds and taking temperatures, but I couldn’t picture myself happy. It wasn’t the future I wanted.
Then, it dawned on me. I had been creating and writing stories for as long as I could remember. Even at four years old, I had my dad write as I told him the stories I had created. I had written for my high school’s newspaper and attended a writing camp over the previous summer. I loved it, and writing was what I had always pictured myself doing as a hobby. Now, it had become much more than a hobby. It was going to be my career even if the future was uncertain. It had to be.

B. Once a certain kind of animals is gone forever, there will never be any more.

11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

D. Animals in danger will be kept away from people.

【答案】Dear Miss Liu,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am writing to update you on my progress in high school. I have been attending classes for over a month now, and I am enjoying my high school life. My classmates are so knowledgeable that they seem to know everything. Despite the pressure, I am motivated to do my best.
I would also like to mention that learning English in high school is different from what I was used to. There are many new words to remember, and we are required to do speaking and listening exercises on an app during weekends. Though it seems more challenging, English is still my favourite subject.
Thank you for your time, Miss Liu. I wish you all the best.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
