When John graduated from high school, he got a job delivering pizzas. But soon he realized that it wasn’t what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a night class at a local tech school to see if welding(焊接), which joins two metals together with heat, was a skill that “was going to stick”.
It did. John wanted to learn everything about welding and decided he’d make welding his career. But one night class wouldn’t be enough. John went to Hobart Welding School in Ohio for real, technical training. Besides welding courses, John also took classes in subjects like metallurgy — the study of metal — and reading blueprints. He became more certain that he would stick to the job.
For the past 18 years, John has been a welder. He now works for the EEW Group. The company has a big project to carry out. It’s in the process of opening a factory that will produce monopiles for offshore wind turbines(涡轮机). Wind turbines produce eco-friendly electricity.
A typical day for John includes a number of tasks and skills. One minute, he’s driving a forklift. The next, he’s reading blueprints, or cutting materials. “There are a lot to deal with,” he told Time for Kids. “It’s not just welding.”
John’s favorite part of being a welder is “making an honest living”. He also takes pride in helping the environment. “I’m glad to stick to what I really want to do,” he says. “I am working for a company that is helping the country to go green, and it’s satisfying to be a part of the process.”
24. What did John use to be
A. A deliveryman. B. A welder. C. A driver. D. A cook.
25. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2
A. What John decided to do. B. How John improved himself.
C. When John learned welding. D. Why John accepted training.
26. What is John’s daily life like
A. Easy and satisfying. B. Tiring but educational.
C. Busy but meaningful. D. Interesting and relaxing.
27. Which can describe John’s experience?
A. Pride goes before a fall. B. One is never too young to learn.
C. Action speaks louder than words. D. One should set goals and work for it.

When put to the test, bees have proved over and over again that they’ve got a lot more to offer than making honey and now some scientists say there’s proof(证据) that they also like to play. A study recently published in Animal Behavior suggests that bumblebees, when given the chance, like to fool around with toys.
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London conducted an experiment in which they set up a container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the bees could choose to pass through a separate section with several small wooden balls. Over 18 days, the scientists watched as the bees “went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, though there seems to be no apparent cause(原因) to drive them to do so.”
The finding suggests that like humans, insects also interact (互动)with inanimate (无生命的) objects as a form of play. Also similar to people, younger bees seemed to be more playful than adult bees. “Previous research has shown that there are lots of animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds. This study provides a strong indication(暗示) that insect minds are far more advanced than we might imagine,” Lars Chittka, who led the study, said.
The study’s first author, Samadi Galpayage, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University, added that it is the evidence(证据) that insects may be able to experience feelings. “They can actually experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger fluffy (覆有绒毛的) animals do. This sort of finding has led to our understanding of insects and will, hopefully, encourage us to respect and protect life on earth ever more,” she said in the statement.
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The conclusion of the research.
B. The assumption (假设猜想)about the bees.
C. The description (描写)of the experiment.
D. The reasons for conducting the experiment.
29. What does the underlined word “apparent” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Clear. B. Preventable. C. Horrible. D. Different.
30. What can we learn from the study
A. Birds like to fool around with toys.
B. Toys are more enjoyable to adult bees.
C. Humans seldom interact with lifeless objects for fun.
D. Insect minds are better developed than we thought.
31. Which statement will Samadi Galpayage agree to
A. Insects experience the same emotions as humans do.
B. Fluffy animals fail to show positive emotional states.
C. More work is needed to protect endangered life on earth.
D. The finding improves our understanding of living things.

Dear Li Hua,
I’m sorry to hear about your struggles you have met after entering the high school. As an editor, I’d like to offer some advice.
Firstly, create a study plan to manage time efficiently, which can help you to reduce stress. Secondly, talk openly with your parents about your feelings and they’ll understand if you explain calmly. Finally, join school clubs to make friends and you can gain support from them. High school challenges are normal, and things will improve, so don’t worry too much.
Wish you confidence and happiness!
Yours,
Cynthia
