The Library Lesson
Rules sometimes feel restrictive, but last month I learned their true value through an experience in our school library.
Our librarian, Ms. Reed, announced new rules to keep the study area peaceful. The key requirement was to avoid loud discussions after school. Many students ignored this, including my friend Tom and me. One Wednesday, we chatted loudly while working on a history project. Ms. Reed reminded us twice to lower our voices, but we continued.
The consequence came quickly: We got banned from the library for a week. To complete our research, we had to use the noisy cafeteria instead. Distractions everywhere made concentrating impossible. Our work quality suffered terribly.
That week taught me why rules matter. They aren’t meant to control us but to protect everyone’s rights. Now I understand to follow reasonable rules actually saves time and reduces stress. Tom and I even volunteered to help monitor the library area—our way of making amends.

Ron Clark is the writer of The Essential 55, a book about teaching students the rules for life. He was named Disney’s American Teacher of the Year for 2000. He helped many disadvantaged (弱势的) students and made a difference in their lives.
Clark’s story started at a primary school in North Carolina, the US. The first time he walked into his fifth-grade class, he met lots of problems. The children had little interest in learning and they often played or slept in class. To make a change, Clark wrote down 55 rules for them. Soon the students made progress in both their studies and lives. They learned to respect others and to be the best of themselves.
Some rules from The Essential 55Rule 1: Make eye contact (交流). Rule 2: Do your homework every night. Rule 3: If someone asks you a question, you should ask a question in return (作为回报). Rule 4: Learn the names of other teachers in the school and greet them. Rule 5: Do not save seats in the lunchroom. Rule 6: Always say thank you when you get something.
Clark doesn’t think it’s so hard to teach his students these rules. “I explain each rule, and then we role-play so that the students know how it works. The first week is just for practice. I will help them remember the rules they broke. After this week, each time they break a rule, they need to go over it.” Clark hopes that when his students leave his classroom, they can have skills that will help them for the rest of their lives.

Family rules help children learn what is and isn’t OK in the family. Good family rules are easy for children to understand.
Mum gives us some rules at home: Clean your rooms every other day. Be ready for dinner at 7:00 p.m. That means sitting at the table with clean hands. If Mum is having a meeting in the house, be very quiet. That means turning down the music. Be ready for bed at 9:30 p.m. and get up at 7:30 a.m. Take out the rubbish (垃圾) on Mondays before school. Clean the bathroom on Fridays.
Following these rules sometimes can be difficult. For example, if your room is really dirty and you can’t finish cleaning it on that day, you have to finish it the next day, along with something else you have to do. That isn’t easy. So never put off today’s work until tomorrow.

Singapore is one of the cleanest countries in the world and attracts a large number of people around the world every year. People in the country have many strict rules in public. These rules make sure that streets are clean and parks look nice. Now, we’ve listed the “Dos and Don’ts” in Singapore.
There are many things you must do in Singapore. When using the escalator (自动扶梯) in Singapore, you must stand on the left and walk on the right. This allows those people who want to walk up to go around you easily. Singapore also provides bike-riding roads and walking roads, so you must make sure you walk on the right roads. Also, you must bring a bottle if you want to drink water, because you can get tap water (自来水) easily in Singapore. The water is carefully tested, so it’s safe to drink straight from the tap. Bottled water is widely available but it’s quite expensive, while tap water is gratis.
However, there are some things that you can’t do. In Singapore, for example, the sale of chewing gum (口香糖) is not allowed. You cannot even bring gum with you. When I first visited Hong Kong, I learned that some rules and customs are not the same as in mainland China. Here’s what I noticed:
66 . They keep space around themselves in public places. If someone accidentally touches the other person, both people usually say sorry and move away quickly.
People try not to speak loudly in busy areas. For example, shouting to friends across the street is not common there. People walk closer to talk softly instead. 67
Another difference is politeness. 68 . There, locals always say “thank you” to workers. People think it is quite rude to get angry and shout at them.
69 . You may have to pay HK$1,500 for throwing litter on the ground in public. Eating or drinking on the subway might cost you HK$2,000. Smoking is not allowed in most parks.
Lastly, waiting in line is a must. 70 . If you push ahead, people will stare (瞪着) at you because they don’t like it .
All in all, Hong Kong’s mix of East and West creates special social rules. By following these rules, visitors can have a better time in this busy city.
A.Always join the line, even for buses.
B.This politeness can be seen in restaurants.
C.Hong Kong has strict rules for public actions.
D.Hong Kong has more policemen on the street.
E.This good habit keeps public places quiet and peaceful.
F.People in Hong Kong want more space between them.

Do you like playing on the computer Do you often chat with others online If yes, you should have good iquette stands for internet etiquette (礼仪).
Through the internet, you can communicate with people all around the world. Of course, you’re sitting in front of a screen and no one can really know who you are. But to make everyone have a friendly internet environment, there are a few online rules for you to follow.
First of all, there is always a golden rule: treat others as you wish to be treated. You’re communicating with real people, so try not to hurt their feelings. However, if others treat you impolitely and you don’t know what to do with it, ask your teachers or parents for help.
Next, act in the same way as you usually do in real life. If you don’t do something in real life, don’t do it online, either! For example, never ask others about their personal information. Also don’t share yours with strangers. It’s important to keep yourself and others safe on the internet.
Finally, use your writing skills properly (恰当地). You may often see abbreviations like “lol” (laugh out loud) or “brb” (be right back) online. Well, it’s OK to abbreviate these words when talking with friends. But if you write an email or a blog post, you’d better not use them. Otherwise, you may fail to express yourself clearly. Also, you should be careful about how you use emojis (表情符号). Make sure you know what an emoji exactly means before using it.
