The Most Popular National Parks in USA
Famously called “America’s best idea” by the novelist and historian Wallace Stegner, the National Park System of the USA offers families a wonderfully affordable way to visit America’s most popular and beautiful landscapes.
Hot Springs National Park
This national park is unique because it’s more of an urban park than a distant wilderness. Located right next to the city of Hot Springs, this is also the country’s smallest national park, covering 5,550 acres. The main attractions here are the historic bathhouses and hot springs that the park was established to protect.
Acadia National Park
This park on the Maine Coast is home to various plants and animals and the tallest mountain on the Atlantic Coast. Today visitors come to Acadia to hike rock peaks, bike historic carriage roads, or relax and enjoy the coastal scenery.
Shenandoah National Park
Occupied by settlers for at least 100 years, it covers 200,000 acres of Virginia wilderness. The 105-mile Skyline Drive traces the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers many jumping-off points to see the beauty of this park. Beyond the scenic drive, you can explore the park’s many offerings through hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
Indiana Dunes National Park
Stretching along 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and covering more than 15,000 acres, this Midwestern park is ideal for relaxing on a beach, hiking the 50 miles of trails, and exploring the diverse ecosystem. The sands are the main attraction with rare plants, and various birds. The national park is free to visit.

National parks in the USA aren’t dog-friendly; while we knew this was the case for some parks, we had heard it varied from park to park. My husband, Mitchell, and I are always on the lookout for dog-friendly options at each national park. We have been to quite a few national parks now and in general, the rule is that dogs must always be on a leash (用狗绳拴住) and stay on paved (铺好的) path areas, no hiking trails (小径).
Yosemite was probably one of the more dog-friendly national parks we’ve been to as there was a longer paved bike trail in addition to a few shorter paved pathways that were dog-friendly. However, the hiking trails were still a no-go. For this reason, we haven’t spent as much time in Yosemite National Park and instead have enjoyed the state parks and national forest that surrounds them.
Dog-friendliness aside, we have not for a second regretted visiting a national park and Yosemite was no exception. You must visit Yosemite if you ever get the chance. There were truly beautiful mountains and even though Mitchell and I grew up in the shadow of (在……附近) the Rockies we were completely impressed by this new landscape. We were fortunate to visit in the fall which had the added benefit of the beautiful colours and fewer people! The landscape easily looked like it could be a painting.
After Yosemite, we had originally planned to make our way to Death Valley. After some discussion, we decided to take a little detour (绕道) and visit Lake Tahoe. The lake was beautiful and there seemed to be signs everywhere for ski hills and endless outdoor activities. We ended up staying for two days at the Zephyr Cove RV Park and Resort. We were able to wash clothes on site, shower and even use their Wi-Fi to catch up on work. We had ended up travelling farther than we planned each day and it was nice to recharge and stay in one place a little longer. We’ve come to the conclusion we’re still working on slowing down.
( ) 4. What is the rule for dogs in national parks in the USA
A. They are allowed on all trails in dog-friendly parks.
B. They are allowed on hiking areas in certain parks.
C. They are permitted to be off-leash.
D. They are limited to paved areas.
( ) 5. Why did the couple stay in Yosemite National Park for a short time
A. They preferred state parks.
B. They had been there many times.
C. They wanted to hike with their dog.
D. They needed to travel farther than planned.
( ) 6. Why does the author mention the Rockies
A. To stress the beauty of Yosemite.
B. To express her desire to visit the Rockies.
C. To describe the breathtaking landscape of her hometown.
D. To show the differences between the Rockies and Yosemite.
( ) 7. What can be inferred about the couple from the last paragraph
A. They felt relaxed after slowing down.
B. They didn’t reach their intended destination.
C. They visited Lake Tahoe simply out of convenience.
D. They didn’t enjoy travelling because of their work stress.
C
Set in the rosy sandstone desert of northeastern Arizona, Canyon de Chelly National Monument is filled with paradox (悖论), because although the ruins are vast, they give us more questions than answers. Home of a large population, the settlement at Canyon de Chelly seems to have been abandoned almost overnight, for no apparent reason.
Archaeologists (考古学家) have found that people lived in Canyon de Chelly for longer than they lived in almost any other place in early America. Filled with beauty, the national monument covers 131 square miles, including the canyons of the de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument River. With steep canyon walls and rushing rivers, this is an excellent place to explore cool spots on the canyon floors.
Most park guests arrive by car and begin their visit on South Rim Drive or North Rim Drive. The changes of altitude in the monument are truly dramatic with thousands of feet drops. For example, the highest park lookout is at 7,000 feet while the visitor’s center is at 5,500 feet. On the South Rim Drive, you’ll find the White House Ruin is located in a long and low cave in a rocky face. While hiking the White House Ruin Trail, be on the lookout for wildflowers and rock art. For a fun side trip, head to the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, which is home to 700 different plant species, including many gorgeous wildflowers.
In nearby Chinle, Arizona, you can arrange for special park guides. The weather can be unpredictable here, so always carry a raincoat with you and prepare for sudden afternoon showers. Generally, the spring and fall are the best time to visit. Summer is hot and dry, and winter is cold, and snowy. In the fall, be particularly aware of thunderstorms that can blow in quickly.
( ) 8. How do people feel when seeing Canyon de Chelly National Monument
A. Thrilled. B. Regretful. C. Puzzled. D. Disappointed.
( ) 9. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Ways to get to Canyon de Chelly.
B. Plant species of Canyon de Chelly.
C. Different visitors between two parks.
D. The scenery of Canyon de Chelly National Monument.
( ) 10. What should visitors pay special attention to in Chinle
A. The company of special guides.
B. The sudden drop of temperature.
C. The unexpected arrival of rain.
D. The arrangement of visiting process.
( ) 11. From which is the text probably taken
A. A biology textbook. B. A travel brochure.
C. A health magazine. D. A research paper.

Recently, China has announced the list of the first five national parks. Each of them is divided into two parts — the core protection area and the general control area. In the core protection area, only research and surveillance (监视) in science are allowed. And the general control area is open to the public, allowing travel activities such as camping and hiking. In the future, national parks are expected to be natural classrooms. People can learn about different kinds of animals and plants through eco-friendly travel activities.
Three River-Source National Park on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is the largest national park in China. Because it is home to the sources of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers, people call it “China’s water tower”.
Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park is in Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces. It covers an area of 14,100 square kilometers. It is our country’s biggest and only place for wild Siberian tigers and Amur leopards to live in.
Wuyi Mountain National Park in Fujian Province is a UNESCO natural and cultural heritage site. The forest makes up over 96 percent of the park. The park is the paradise of birds, kingdom of snakes and world of insects. You can also see the Danxia landform there.
Giant Panda National Park connects panda habitats in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Inside the park are more than 1,600 wild giant pandas. They make up over 70 percent of the pandas in China.
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is the largest tropical forest in China. There are more than 400 kinds of plants that can only be found in Hainan.

In recent years, environmental experts have learned about the damage to the Everglades. They say the balance of nature there has been destroyed. 20 However, efforts to protect the area are continuing so people from all over the world may continue visiting this biological treasure.

In a quiet little town, there was a small park where children would laugh and play. In the center of this park stood a wooden swing set. Among the children, a nine-year-old girl named Lily had a special bond with this swing. Every day after school, she would rush to the park, her backpack bouncing against her back, and spend hours soaring through the air, her laughter mingling with the wind.
Lily’s best friend, Ethan, was a boy who lived next door. They were inseparable, sharing secrets, dreams, and endless adventures. Often, you would find them on those swings, their feet barely touching the ground, their imaginations taking them far beyond the confines of the playground. They dreamed of becoming astronauts, travelling to outer space, and discovering new worlds together.
One sunny afternoon, Lily tested the limits of the swing. With a determined push, Ethan soared high, feeling the thrill as the swing reached its top. “Look, Lily! I’m flying!” Ethan shouted, his laughter ringing through the air. But not far from the park, his parents watched them with great concerns. There was an uneasy tension growing. When Ethan came down from the swing, his parents rushed to the swing and took him home immediately.
Later that evening, Lily cried on the couch, her tears staining the fabric. “Mom, Ethan said he would not play with me anymore. Why ” she asked, worry pooling in her blue eyes. Her mother took a deep breath, but the words seemed to be trapped in her throat. “I’m not sure, sweetie. He… He might be leaving for a while.”
Days turned into weeks, and the park felt emptier without Ethan’s laughter. Each swing back and forth felt like a reminder of their vanished adventures. With every passing day, Lily’s heart sank deeper into confusion and sorrow. She hoped that he would return, refusing to accept that he might not come back again.

Dear Eric,
Welcome to China in the coming winter holiday. Glad to know you’re planning to visit China, I’d like to offer you some suggestions.
First of all, you’d better make a reservation for the trip including airline tickets and a comfortable hotel because of the busiest tour season. In China, you can take high-speed railway to the tourist cities you’re interested in. As for famous scenic sites, I extremely recommend you should visit places of interest like the Summer Place, the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and so on, which are all unique sights. Finally, it is a good idea to have a guide. It’s with his or her help that you will find your tour arrangements more enjoyable and learn about local civilization more easily.
I’m looking forward to your arrival. If you need further information, don’t hesitate to contact me.
Yours,
Li Hua

【One possible version】
Eventually, Lily decided to write a letter to him. She sat at her desk by the window, picked up her favourite pink stationery and the pencil decorated with little flowers. Recalling the happy times on the swing with Ethan, Lily’s eyes became a little moist, but she held back her tears and wrote carefully. In the letter, she poured out her longing during these days. She told him that the swing in the park was still there, but without his presence. Every time she swung on the swing, she missed the dreams they had once shared, the little secrets they had whispered to each other, and the laughter that had echoed in the air. She folded the letter carefully and put it into a light blue envelope. She wrote Ethan’s name neatly on the envelope and then went to Ethan’s house. She gently slipped the letter into his mailbox, her heart full of anticipation, hoping that this letter would bring Ethan back to her side.
The next day, Ethan showed up in the park as expected. Lily rushed to the park as usual after school. When she saw the familiar figure standing by the swing from a distance, her eyes lit up immediately and she ran over excitedly. Seeing Lily, Ethan showed a bright smile on his face. He told Lily that after receiving her letter, he had a deep conversation with his parents. He told them how much he missed Lily and how reluctant he was to leave the park and the swing. Touched by their pure friendship, his parents agreed that he could come back to play with Lily. Lily happily took Ethan’s hand and they ran to the swing together. They sat on the swing again and the laughter rang out once more over the park, as if the previous parting had been just a short dream, and their friendship had become even deeper and more precious after this setback.
