As a mother of three young girls, Alison Cowan worried about her daughters growing up too fast. From asking for the latest toy to wanting to wear make-up, it seemed to Alison and her husband, Alan, that their children were never satisfied with what they had.
The girls would ask for a toy, but would lose interest in it as soon as their friends had something new. Birthday parties were no longer just a few party games and blowing up balloons. All the parents seemed to invite professional performers and compete over who could give the most expensive party bag. At just seven years old, Amy and her friends were paying more and more attention to their appearance. It was a feeling that many parents would have.
However, few would dream of leaving a comfortable family life and a comfortable house to move their family 3,000 miles away to Africa in search of a simpler life. But, last June, Alison and her husband, Alan, moved with their daughters to Kampala in Uganda, to show them a different lifestyle.
For almost a year, the girls play in the red, dusty streets with local children and visit markets to buy fresh fish and vegetables for dinner. They have been able to play and use their imagination away from the distractions (分心) of the consumer-driven society. Now, instead of competing over who has won a computer game, the girls think about things like the frequent water shortages and electricity cuts in certain areas. “At times, we’ve been without water for five days. The girls always accept it, though. Their world before had been so small, but now they understand what simple life is like.”

White Fang slowly got better and during this time, he did not let anyone near him. Scott wanted to kill him, because his teeth hurt Matt’s hand. But Matt said, “Let's give him more time.” Scott agreed.
A few days later, Scott tried to touch White Fang. He, too, got badly bitten. Instead of getting angry with the dog, however, he walked slowly toward White Fang, holding another piece of meat. China now has more than 30,000 kilometers of high speed track, and this is expected to increase to 38,000 kilometers by 2025. Fully two thirds of the world’s high speed rail (by length) is in China. Here, we track the exciting technological developments in high speed rail and consider their cultural influence.
While the main advantage of the high speed rail lines is convenience (方便) for people to get from one city to another as quickly as possible, some of these high speed lines have become popular tourist attractions (places that many tourists visit). A good example of this is the Hefei-Fuzhou high speed line. This was one of the most challenging high speed rail routes ever built; nearly 90% of the track was laid either on bridges or in tunnels. However, the amazing views are worth it, as the train goes through some of China’s most beautiful mountainous areas, including the Huangshan and the Wuyi Mountain Ranges (山脉).
As China has had skills and knowledge in high speed rail, it is trying to extend its technology to other countries. Its first project on the international market was the line connecting Istanbul with Turkey’s capital, Ankara, 530 kilometers away. This was followed by projects among other countries. Perhaps its most challenging project is a Trans Asian network (横贯亚洲铁路网) connecting China with Europe. Although it is difficult, China will make every effort to take on this plan. It is hoped to be completed by 2030 as a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路的倡议).
Thanks to high speed rail, the travel time between main cities in China has already been reduced to only a few hours. So this convenience should improve the development within and out of China. No doubt, it will also bring the people of the country closer together, and in time bring about deep social changes.
11. How many kilometers of high speed track does China have now
A. Over 38,000. B. Over 30,000 C. Over 45,000. D. Over 57,000.
12. Why does the writer talk about the Hefei-Fuzhou line in Paragraph 2
A. To prove how fast the high speed lines can be.
B. To stress how convenient the high speed lines are.
C. To explain high speed lines can be popular tourist attractions.
D. To show the technical development of the high speed lines.
13. What does the underlined word “extend” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. sell. B. return. C. hide. D. spread.
14. What is the most challenging project that China plans to take on
A. Inventing faster trains. B. Connecting China with Europe.
C. Designing and building its own trains. D. Connecting the whole country in 2030.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Racing to the Future B. Great Changes in China
C Rising China in the World D. High Speed Rail in the World

Scheduling (行程安排) attracts many people.
Scheduling means setting a detailed, fixed time for an activity. It is one of the most familiar and powerful methods of forming a habit and it’s one of my favorites. Scheduling makes us far more likely to turn an activity into a habit. I schedule even more small habit such as “Kiss my daughter every morning and every night.”
Habits grow strongest and farthest when they are repeated in the easiest ways. And for most of us, putting an activity on the schedule means locking us into doing it. So In college and law school, I never asked myself, “Should I go to class ” or “Do I need to do this reading tonight ” If class was scheduled, I went. If reading was on the schedule, I read it.
A friend with a daily schedule gets up at 4:30 am, takes a 40-minute walk, eats breakfast with her two sons, showers, dresses and is on the train to work at 7:30. For someone else, any of these activities might be a challenge, but not for her; she’s already decided what to do.
Scheduling can help us fill our timetable of the day, and it will turn the timetable into habits. Scheduling one activity makes that time unavailable (不能利用) for anything else. Which is good—especially for people who have trouble saying no. Every week, Elisa and I go on a “Wednesday afternoon adventure (探险)” (though we are not that kind of adventurous, and usually end up at the museum). Especially now that Elisa is in her special teenage years, I want to make sure we have some pleasant time together every week. So I put our adventure on the schedule and if I am asked to do anything else, I say automatically (自动的), “I have a plan at that time.” Scheduling makes activities automatic, which builds habits.

假如你是张华,曾经在你校交流学习的May给你写了一封电子邮件。请你根据邮件内容,用英语给May回一封100词左右的电子邮件。
Dear Zhang Hua, It’s a long time since I wrote my last email. I’m writing for your help. You know my dream is to be a doctor, but some of my classmates laugh at me. They say I’m too careless to be a doctor. My parents don’t think I work hard enough to be a student in a famous medical university. I’m losing confidence in myself. Do I have to give up What should I do I look forward to your valuable advice. Best wishes
Dear May,
I’m glad to hear from you. I hope I can help you.
You said that your classmates laughed at you because your dream is to be a doctor and you are careless. If you are careless sometimes, you need to try to be more careful. The more careful you are, the fewer mistakes you will make. What’s more, you can talk to your parents and tell them that you will work harder than before. With their support, you will be more likely to put your heart into what you do. I think everyone may have trouble, but we should face it bravely.
If we keep trying, we can make our dreams come true. I hope what I said can help you.
All the best.
