A
Is early childhood education really necessary? Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning through playing to develop the children’s physical, sensory, communicational and social development. Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally trained before they are old enough for kindergarten. 21*cnjy*com
There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education. Studies have shown that orphaned children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed causing failure in school, and even in life. Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public help or go to jail.
There are also negative parts to put a child in formal education programs too early. Time Magazine online explains that“the younger the child, the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work”. I have personally witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs become frustrated and bored with school before they finished high school. Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the better off he or she is, so they push to start children earlier.
Actually, while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary years, studies also show that this head start is really a“false start”, as the gains are lost in middle and high school years. It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life’s success than early education. Head Start programs have not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school children. Perhaps it is time to find other ways to close that gap.
56. The purpose of the government valuing the early childhood education is .

D. to train the children formally and regularly

“A child in the street is a child that has been exposed(暴露)to a lot of bad things. And this child has no love at all. This child has no respect(尊重)for himself. He sees everybody as an enemy, and he can’t trust anyone. ”
Who is Moses Zulu talking about? Are there even people who live like that? Sadly, in truth, there are. They happen to be the Zambian children that Moses Zulu helps to improve their lives. Zulu does his best to give many children hope to live even though they might have AIDS. Without his continuous work through his organization called Children’s Town, many Zambian children would have been forced to survive(生存)in an African city by getting a job as a street vendor(街头小贩), or helping other people.
In 1990, Moses Zulu founded Children’s Town in Zambia, where one million children have no parents, largely because of AIDS. Children’s Town teaches children basic life skills needed for their future. Each child goes through a five-year training program where they’re taught responsibility(责任), values, and self-care. Zulu’s Children’s Town provides hope for less fortunate children.
As we all know, a hero is any person who is respected for his qualities and achievements. There are not many people who are willing to help others in need. Zulu’s contribution to today’s modern society teaches us to lend a helping hand to others who are not as lucky as we are. He teaches us to make a difference in the world by helping others.
And from now on, if ever you throw away your banana just because it looks bad, well, remember that a group of people, suffering from AIDS, homelessness, or other causes, would fight each other just to get their hands on a single bad banana.

A. plant more bananas
B. make use of bad food
C. invent medicine for AIDS
D. help poor people
65. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Children’s Town has been founded for 30 years.
B. Children in Children’s Town will receive five years’training.
C. In Zambia, one million children lose their parents because of AIDS.
D. Children’s Town helps children in Zambia by giving money directly to them.

American cities are similar to other cities around the world: in every country, cities reflect the values of the culture. American cities are changing, just as American society is changing.
After World WarⅡ, the population of most large American cities decreased; however, the population in many Sun Belt cities increased. Los Angeles and Houston are cities where population shifts(转移)to and from the city reflect the changing values of American society. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, city residents(居民)became wealthier. They had more children so they needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs.
Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in the 1950s are now adults. Many, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. They continue to move to Sun Belt cities and older ones of the Northeast and Midwest. Many young professionals are moving back into the city. They prefer the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there; or they just enjoy the excitement and possibilities that the city offers.
This population shift is bringing problems as well as benefits. Countless poor people must leave their apartments in the city because the ownerswant to sell the buildings or make apartments for sale instead of for rent. In the 1950s, many poor people did not have enough money to move to the suburbs; now many of these same people do not have enough money to stay in the cities.
Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents now see a bright, new future. Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: many dying cities are alive again.
66. What does the author think of cities all over the world?
A. They are alive.
B. They are hopeless.
C. They are similar.
D. They are different.
67. Why did American city residents want to live in the suburbs after World WarⅡ?
A. Because older American cities were dying.
B. Because they were richer and needed more space.
C. Because cities contained the worst parts of society.
D. Because they could hardly afford to live in the city.
68. According to the 4th paragraph, a great many poor people in American cities .
A. are faced with housing problems
B. are forced to move to the suburbs
C. want to sell their buildings
D. need more money for daily expenses
69. We can conclude from the text that .
A. American cities are changing for the worse
B. people have different views on American cities
C. many people are now moving from American cities
D. the population is decreasing in older American cities
70. The underlined word“suburbs”in the second paragraph probably means in Chinese.
A. 市区 B. 郊区 C. 市中心 D. 农村
D
The ancient city is in Pingyao County, Shanxi Province. The city wall was first built during the Zhou Dynasty and was rebuilt in 1370. Since 1997, it has been listed as a World Heritage Site. Now Pingyao city is the only one in China completely protected as it was hundreds of years ago, no modern buildings, only narrow stone-plate streets with many Chinese-style shops on both sides.
The perimeter(周长)of this square city is 6. 4 km long and the city wall is one of the oldest city walls in China. It is 12m high with an average width of 5m. The wall was built with earth and covered with bricks. Outside the city wall there is a river, 4m wide and 4m deep.
There are several gates of the city, two each on the east and the west and one each on the south and the north. Each gate has two doors. This has given the city the name“Turtle City”with the two gates on the south and the north standing for the head and the tail of the turtle and four gates on the east and west standing for the four legs. The doors on the south and the north stand opposite each other, like the head of the turtle extending out and two wells just beyond the southern gate are like the turtle’s two eyes.
Located on the trade route between Beijing and Xi’an, Pingyao developed into a financial(金融的)center where the local people set up the nation’s earliest banks. These banks were the first in China to use checks. Several old courtyards have been turned into museums; most of them are homes and offices of Pingyao’s old banks. One of the most remarkable aspects of visiting here is realizing that this place was very important in China’s financial history.
