About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college in New York, I was working as a practice student at my university’s Museum of Natural History. One day while I was working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in wheelchair.
As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was seated on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and the trunk of the human body. She was wearing a little white dress with the patterns of red roses and yellow dots.
As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink(眨眼示意). As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the most beautiful, largest smile I have ever seen.
All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. I immediately felt full of hope and confidence. She took me, a poor, unhappy college student, into her world, a world of smiles, love and warmth.
That was ten years ago, but I still remember it clearly as if it happened just yesterday. I’m a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she gave me.

Last Friday a storm swept through two villages in the New Territories, destroying fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or broken roofs. One person was killed, several were badly hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller hurt. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless after the storm.
A farmer, Mr. Tan, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour.
“I was eating with my wife and children, ”he said, “When we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We tried our best to climb out but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but very frightened. ”
Mrs. Woo Mei Fong said that her husband had just left for work when she felt that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children.

A simple flower made headlines(头条新闻)in the British press last week. How could that be?
British Prime Minister David Cameron and his ministers were attending a reception hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They insisted on wearing poppies(罂粟花)in their buttonholes.
What’s wrong with that?
According to the Global Times, Chinese officials had clearly asked the UK delegation(代表团)not to wear poppies. The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.
So what’s the importance of the poppy? It’s a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people.
From the Chinese point of view, the poppy is a symbol of China’s humiliation at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars of the 19th century. Britain forced China to open the borders to trade - including in the opium - which was made from poppies grown in India.
Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World WarⅠ. Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried. Since then, Poppy Day(November 11)has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.
So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons. And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other’s standpoint(立场).
Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny. And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guest from overseas. US President Barack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain’s Queen - a dull person with no interest in music. Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies. But they were in US format(模式)and impossible to play on British DVD players.
Many countries have diplomats(外交官)stationed overseas. Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home. However, sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook(忽视)the cultural importance of a small flower.
67. British Prime Minister David Cameron probably attended a reception in Beijing on .
A. October 1 B. November 11
C. December 31 D. January 1
68. The poppy reminds the Chinese of .
A. the shame caused by European countries in the 19th century
B. the British soldiers who were killed and buried during World WarⅠ
C. the Chinese soldiers killed during World WarⅡ
D. the suffering caused by Britain during World WarⅠ
69. The diplomatic(外交的)problem in Beijing is mainly caused by .
A. the translation mistake
B. the language difference
C. the cultural difference
D. the different lifestyle
70. We can infer that .
A. Britain’s Queen is not interested in art
B. Gordon Brown was fond of American movies US President Barack Obama sent himwww-2-1-cnjy-com
C. US President Barack Obama received a gift for music
D. Britain’s Queen may not like the iPod US President Barack Obama presented her

Text 10
I’m honored to be a judge for the English Speech Competition.?As a judge and college teacher, ?I’d like to share with you some tips on how to be successful in the competition, which I hope will help in preparing for the competition.
First, it’s better to use familiar words. ?Many competitors hold the belief that complicated words sound impressive. In fact they usually destroy understanding. Also, learning when and how to pause is not only a major challenge, but also important as one gains more confidence during these moments of silence. One thing I want to mention is that during these pauses, do not fill the silence with“uh”“er”or“um”. They are annoying. Next, remember to strike the right balance between good pronunciation and fluency. Pronunciation is more important. Remember, personal appearance plays an important role in making a speech. Judges always see the competitors before they begin to speak. My main advice is simple: Be yourself. My last advice to you is that practice makes perfect.
In conclusion, I wish every one of you success in the competition.

Flood
Flood is one of the worst natural disasters, which can cause great damage to property and people’s lives.
What are the causes of floods? The heavy rain for weeks can cause floods, and typhoons, hurricanes and tsunamis can also bring floods. Scientists are worried that the global warming can make the polar icecaps melt and will result in the whole world’s flooding.
Before floods come, you can see the river is rising higher and higher. As they are coming, you will first hear a loud noise, which grows to a terrible roar. You will see a wall of water quickly advancing towards you. Before you realize something, the water is swallowing the houses and streets and bridges.
Usually after the flood, it seems that nearly everything is destroyed. Thousands of people are made homeless. Many of them are injured and some even die during the flood. 21*cnjy*com
All in all, we should do everything we can to protect ourselves from flood.
