I don’t recall exactly when air travel became depressing. From frequently canceled flights and endless fees, to narrow seating and absent food service, I find the experience upsetting.
On one such recent flight, I had a short stay at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. Like most airports, it housed a mad rush of travelers. But there was an inviting shine: Around the crowded hall the airport had placed a long row of rocking chairs. With two hours until my connecting flight, I immediately claimed one, seated myself, and began to gently rock as I observed the passing scene. I appreciated that I had been gifted an oasis (乐土) of calm among the chaos
And then, as if the rockers weren’t enough, the second act: There was a grand piano on the other side of the hall. An older man appeared, sat down, and began to play. His touch was so loving, so invested with feeling, that I no longer felt that I was in an airport. Rather, the pianist and I were now in the oasis together. I no longer heard the noise of the crowd, but only the beautiful pieces of music.
But the benefit of the man’s music went beyond the lifting of my spirits. There was something larger and more magical at work. As soon as the music began, the entire tone of the airport changed. People began to walk more slowly. Many paused to regard the pianist. A man put down his bags, placed his hands on his hips, and began to dance to the music. Now, at last, we were all in this together. I rocked, the man danced, the pianist played, and the rapid pace of the crowd slowed to something like a walk in a familiar neighborhood.
My two-hour stay passed all too quickly, but the pianist played on. For a moment I dithered, wondering whether I should choose between my flight and more music, more rocking. But I had family waiting for me back in Maine. This flight was a pleasure or an adventure.
24. Why did the author have to stay at Charlotte Douglas International Airport
A. To change planes. B. To enjoy rocking chairs.
C. To experience the oasis of calm. D. To watch floods of travelers.
25. What can we infer about the author from paragraph 3
A. He played several pieces of music. B. He was absorbed in the piano music.
C. He shared his pleasure with the man D. He narrowly missed his flight.
26. What is the main idea of paragraph 4
A. Music kept the author’s spirits up. B. Many passengers put off their flights.
C. Many passengers danced to the music. D. Music changed the atmosphere of the airport.
27. What does the underlined word “dithered” probably mean in the last paragraph
A. Hesitated. B. Concluded. C. Insisted. D. Appreciated.

In the UK, there are 12 million people suffering with hearing loss, and about 6.7 million could benefit from hearing aids. However, only about 2 million people use them.
People with hearing loss and requiring hearing aids may feel as though hearing aids are meant only for older people. They can feel a sense of embarrassment, aging and lack of confidence when wearing them. Besides, some people have a lack of confidence with hearing aids and believe they will not help, or will even make their hearing worse. Individuals sometimes believe they will be dependent on their hearing aids, thus choosing not to use them out of desire for independence. Therefore, people with hearing loss may turn to approaches such as excessively (过度地) turning the volume up on their TVs.
In the UK, patients with hearing loss can obtain hearing aids free of charge through the NHS (英国国家医疗服务体系). However, the choice of style and level of technology may be limited and can also involve lengthy waiting lists. There are a greater number of hearing aid options available in the private sector but these can sometimes be expensive, which can be a prohibitive factor for individuals.
There are many different types of hearing aids such as invisible-in-canals. The hearing aid selection is discussed with each individual at their hearing assessment, and the correct hearing aids are selected according to their level of hearing loss.
There have been other advancements in technology such as rechargeable hearing aids. There is now wireless connectivity in many hearing aids, which enables hearing aids to be connected to mobile devices, tablets and television, allowing direct audio streaming into hearing aids.
Undoubtedly, wearing hearing aids is very beneficial for wellbeing, allowing individuals to interact with others and hear better. All of the advancements in technology mean the functionality and comfort of hearing aids has greatly increased, considerably improving quality of life for more people with hearing loss.
28. What does the author want to convey in paragraph 2
A. What people with hearing loss should do. B. How individuals respond to hearing aids.
C. Why some people avoid using hearing aids. D. Whether hearing aids will affect independence.
29. Which is a big barrier when getting hearing aids from NHS
A. The cost may be higher. B. Patients must wait for distribution.
C. Individuals have no choice of their own. D. The competition from private sectors is fierce.
30. What is mainly considered during the hearing aid selection process
A. The individual's specific hearing loss. B. The individual's personal preferences.
C. The types of the hearing aids. D. The appearance of the hearing aids.
31 What can we expect of the hearing aids in the future
A. They will be connected to mobile devices.
B. They will be made smaller and more visible.
C. They will cure hearing loss permanently.
D. They will provide better functionality and comfort for users.

As Earth’s climate continues to change, a plant’s ability to adapt to its shifting environment is critical to its survival. Often, to stay alive a plant must move locations by releasing its seeds, but plants are rooted in the ground and cannot move themselves. Instead, they are dependent on animals or the wind to carry their seeds to a new location.
To better understand how plants can survive in the face of challenges like climate change, a team of researchers at the University of-Missouri (MU) and Michigan State University recently cooperated to develop an innovative mathematical model that can provide fast and reliable predictions of how far wind can carry a plant's seeds.
"Once seeds are released from a plant, we wanted to know how far they can go because as wind conditions vary the seeds will be moved around differently as a result of various weights, sizes and shapes," said Binbin Wang, an assistant professor at the MU College of Engineering. One advantage of the model is its ability to predict the probability of where seeds might eventually land on the ground when winds are wild. “This model gives us an insight into the probability of where a seed will land on the ground in different conditions depending on the seed type, the plant type and the wind speed,” adds Wang.
“Understanding how plants move as seeds year-round is critical for us to analyze how they’ll be able to handle climate change. Besides, this movement is also important for how we can increase diversity in the ecosystem.” Lauren Sullivan, a biologist and professor at Michigan State University, explained.
Instead of only making assumptions about how plants move, biologists are now able to partner with researchers who can factor in aspects like aerodynamics and micro-meteorology (微观气象学). This innovative approach will help them develop accurate models that are simple enough to make good predictions in just a short amount of time in the future.
32. What’s the function of paragraph 1
A. To attract readers’ interest. B. To bring up the topic of the text.
C. To introduce plants’ survival conditions. D. To tell the author's views about climate changes.
33. What is the mathematical model aimed for
A. Monitoring plants’ growing process. B. Predicting how wind conditions change.
C. Solving the survival crisis of plants. D. Calculating how far wind can carry seeds.
34. What does Lauren Sullivan think of the movement
A. It mainly depends on the wind speed. B. It contributes to the protection of ecosystem.
C. It plays a vital role in dealing with climate change. D. It helps researchers evaluate the wind condition.
35. What can we infer about the models in the future from the last paragraph
A. They will be used in weather forecast. B. They will be applied to analyzing plant types.
C. They will be simplified and work more efficiently. D. They will speed up the plants' movement.

A Memorable April Fool’s Day
I really like to trick people, especially my friends, Cherry and Harry. But after one particular day, when a st range incident happened, it changed. I learned a lot on that day.
What is the awful incident Well, it all started when Miss Beth introduced us to a new exchange student, Pei. “She is very tall,” I said to Cherry. “Speaking of heights, wouldn’t she be perfect in the cheerleading team ” Cherry asked. “Maybe... Well, we’d better keep quiet. Miss Beth is looking at us,” I said.
Surprisingly, I was assigned to guide the new girl around. During the break, I wanted to start a conversation with Pei, so I quickly approached her. “Hey, Pei,” I said. “Hello,” she replied politely. I had a short chat with her and she seemed to be a nice person. Before going home, I showed Pei around.
The next day, I was very excited because it was April Fool’s Day. I planned to trick my friends with Pei since she was new. I really hoped that she would cooperate with me. So, I quickly ran to her before our English period started.
Unfortunately, Matt, a naughty schoolboy came to our classroom, realising that there wasn’t any teacher in. “Go away!” I shouted. As usual, he ignored that. I took Pei’s notebook and hit Matt until it fell on the floor. Well... it wasn’t actually a notebook. It was Pei’s diary. “Ooh, it’s a diary!” shouted Matt. Then, he started to read out Pei’s diary loudly. “I really think Mal is bossy and…” Matt kept reading all of Pei’s inner thoughts.
I could see that Pei was embarrassed. She grabbed her diary from Matt and ran outside the classroom. I was quite upset, and had a bad feeling about the whole thing. After a while, I jumped out of seat to follow her just to say sorry. However, I couldn’t find her anywhere before the school bell rang, I had to walk back to the classroom.

W: Hello, there! How are you
M: A little bit upset.
W: Oh! Really What happened
M: I recharged my mobile phone this morning, and without any reason, the battery just blew up. Luckily, no one got hurt.
W: Really That’s scary!
M: Yes! I’ll go to the shop for an explanation.
W: Just be careful with the battery when recharging
You’ve got to handle it with caution. See my new solal watch! It has no such recharging problems.
M: Is it solar-powered
W: Yes, and it’s automatic and it doesn’t require any battery. It is safe to wear.
M: Does it stop keeping time in the dark

【答案】17. B 18. C 19. A 20. C
【原文】Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to talk about Maslow university. The university was not originally a university at all. John Maslow came to Melbourne from Scotland in 1822 at the age of 33. He had worked as a math teacher before, and when he went to Melbourne he found that there were lots of people wanting education but not nearly enough people to teach them. So he set up a teacher’s college in 1825. The students of the college spent an average of two years here before they went out to find work in primary schools and high schools being set up around the state. Around 3200 students graduated from maslow teachers college in its first 10 years of operation. Even though John maslow died in 1848 the teachers college continued to run in much the same way until 1868. Around that time, the state government had plans to establish two new universities. In 1866. Riverdale university was established on site about 11 kilometres northwest of the city centre. The government wanted the second university to be a bit closer to the city centre, so they chose to change Maslow teachers’ college into Maslow university. That happened two years after they opened riverdale university. As you know, maslow is in the southeast of the city centre, but it’s only 1~5 kilometres away. Okay, that’s all. Thank you.

【答案】Then Miss Beth walked into our classroom for our English period. She noticed that Pei was missing. “Where’s Pei ” Miss Beth asked. “We don’t know,” answered the whole class. Suddenly, our class monitor stood up and told Miss Beth about the incident that happened earlier. I could see that Miss Beth was upset. She asked me to meet her at the staffroom before going home. “I am in boiling water,” I said to Cherry. “Don’t worry. Everything will be fine”, Cherry told me.
After school, I went to the staffroom to meet Miss Beth. “Miss Beth, did you want to meet me ” I asked politely. “Yes, but can we go out ” she replied. “Sure,” I said. After we went out, I saw Cherry, Harry, and most surprisingly Pei. I was too shocked to speak. Then, Cherry explained and told me that this was an April fool trick. I was relieved after finding out that Pei wasn’t actually missing. Well, my own trick blew up in my face. But this experience made me feel closer to my friends as well as my teacher.
