Here on the side of Mount Everest, Kaji Bista has spent a decade keeping a lonely watch over a largely abandoned scientific laboratory. He expects the world’s highest research station to once again come to life.
The laboratory opened in 1990 and for more than 2 decades, it served as a special spot for scientists seeking to keep an eye on changing conditions on Earth’s tallest mountain. In 2015, shifting scientific priorities (优先考虑的事) cost the lab most of its funding, and its 15-person staff were reduced to just Bista. Now, the tall, soft-spoken man spends 10 months a year working to keep the aging racility functioning. “My emotional attachment to the lab … keeps me going,” he said.
Bista began working at the station in 2006. He states that it was originally established to settle a disagreement between Italian and U. S. mountaineers over whether Everest or K2 was the world’s tallest. Researchers used GPS measurements to prove Everest was taller, as the Italian climbers insisted. That work finally evolved into a plan, supported by the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), to develop a facility that could do much more.
Climate scientist Sudeep Thakuri says that he is grateful the lab has played an important role in not only his own studies of the region’s gl ciers (冰川), but also in studies of regional biodiversity, the long-range transport of pollutants, etc. In response to the appeal of scientists, Suresh Kumar Dhungel a senior scientist at NAST, reports discussions with CNR officials have recently resulted in moves to resume laboratory operations. And Agostino Da Polenza, president of Ev-K2-CNR, says he is working to regenerate lab programs. And his group plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign later to raise more money.
Bista does his best to repair those aging instruments. “When I face any problem, I turn to experts in Italy and then act accordingly,” he said. But sometimes it can take months for spare parts to arrive. “I am helpless in this case,” he said. Yet, Bista hasn’t lost hope. “This laboratory will soon be renovated (整修),” he said. “This is my belief.”
41. What can we infer about the research station
A. It has set off a disagreement. B. It has been lightly regarded for years.
C. It involves high repair costs. D. It has been fully functioning for years.
42. What was the station originally intended for
A. Studying the effect of human activities on Everest.
B. Providing accommodation for mountain climbers.
C. Conducting a geographic survey.
D. Establishing a harmon ous relationship between Italy and America.
43. What does the underlined word “resume” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Restore. B. Prevent. C. Stop. D. Abandon.
44. What challenge is Bista facing in his work
A. Lack of timely guidance from professionals. B. Delays in transporting the repair parts.
C. Conflicts between research team members. D. Pressure from administrative management.
45. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Mountaineers fuel debate over Everest B. Scientists make the most of a lab on Everest
C. Scientific research on Everest matters a lot D. A lone caretaker struggles to keep a lab alive
C
Lego, the world’s largest toy company, has built a reputation not only for the durability (耐用性) of its bricks, but also for its large investment in sustainability (可持续性). So it was surprising when the Financial Times reported that Lego had pulled out of its well-known “Bottles to Bricks” project.
This ambitious project aimed to replace traditional Lego plastic with a new material made from recycled plastic bottles. However, when Lego assessed the project’s environmental impact throughout its supply chain, it found that producing bricks with recycled plastic would require extra materials and energy to make them durable enough, which would result in higher carbon emissions. Therefore, the company decided to stick with its current fossil fuel-based materials while continuing to search for more sustainable alternatives.
Pursuing sustainability requires attention to the entire life cycle of a product, which involves three types of emissions: Scope 1 emissions are generated directly by a company’s internal operations. Scope 2 emissions are caused by generating the electricity, steam, heat or cooling a company consumes. And scope 3 emissions are generated by a company’s supply chain. From 2022 to 2023, Lego’s total emissions increased by 30 percent — even though the company’s scope 2 emissions related to purchased energy decreased by 40 percent. The increase was almost entirely in its scope 3 emissions.
Currently, fewer than 30 percent of companies report meaningful scope 3 emissions, in part because these emissions are difficult to track. But as more companies follow in Lego’s footsteps and begin reporting scope 3 emissions, they will likely find themselves in the same position, realizing that efforts to reduce carbon emissions often boil down to supply chain and consumer-use emissions. And the results may force them to make some tough choices.
The Lego example serves as a cautionary (警世的) tale in a complex environment for which most companies are not well prepared. As more companies come under examination for their entire carbon footprint, we may see more situations where well-intentioned sustainability efforts come across uncomfortable truths. This calls for a careful understanding of sustainability, not as a list of good deeds, but as a complex, ongoing process that requires carefulness, openness and, above all, a devotion to the benefit of future generations.
46. What made Lego discontinue its “Bottles to Bricks” project
A. High production costs with recycled materials. B. Lack of public support with recycled materials.
C. Not too much recycled plastic. D. Environmental issues with recycled materials.
47. What is the feature of scope 3 emissions
A. They are easier to track and control.
B. They significantly contribute to carbon emissions.
C. They have very small effects on sustainability efforts.
D. They mainly come from companies’ internal processes.
48. How does Lego influence other companies according to the text
A. By helping them innovate green materials.
B. By reminding them of supply chain emissions.
C. By encouraging them to focus on product quality.
D. By warning them of unpredictable market conditions.
49. What can be known from the Lego example
A. Companies should prioritize environmental concerns.
B. Public awareness and support need to be emphasized.
C. Sustainability requires continuous adaptation and efforts.
D. Material innovation can ease companies’ environmental issues.
50. What can be the best title for the text
A. Lego’s future: a green and long journey B. The challenges to the toy industry
C. The complexities of carbon emissions D. New plastic: a greener alternative
D
When the German naturalist Alexander Humboldt arrived in South America in 1799, one thing astonished him. “Look at the flowers and the birds, ” he wrote. “Even the crayfish are blue and yellow.”
Gradually, Humboldt’s thoughts developed and changed into an informal guess that organisms in equatorial (赤道的) areas are more colourful than those near the poles.
In a new paper in Nature Ecology & Evolution, Chris Cooney, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Sheffield, and his colleagues offer what they call the most comprehensive (全面的) examination of this guess to date, indicating that it does apply to birds known as passerines, a family of songbirds.
Over several years, Dr Cooney’s team photographed 4, 527 birds from Britain’s Natural History Museum’s data — representing roughly half the total bird diversity on Earth. As passerine birds are sensitive and visible to UV light (紫外光), they see more colours than humans. The researchers, therefore, took pictures under UV light to get true bird’s-eye views.
A machine-learning method was then used to identify the colours of the feathers at hundreds of points on each sample. The total number of colours found on each bird was then mapped onto the geographic distribution of their parent species. The researchers used this data to study how colourful different regions of the world were. The key factor here was the diversity of colours on individual birds.
Equatorial birds, the researchers concluded, were indeed more colourful than their cousins in temperate (温带的) regions. The birds sampled at the equator had, on average, about 90 different colours, while birds at 60 degrees latitude (纬度) had about 70 colours.
Over the decades, many explanations for tropical colourfulness have been put forward. Some have guessed that warmer climates make more resources available to the creatures here, allowing them to spend energy developments (装饰品). Others have pointed out that the bright colours may arise from chemical compounds (化合物) in their diet, or make it possible for breeding (繁殖) pairs to detect one another in the darker environment of a tropical forest floor.
51 What surprised Humboldt when he arrived in South America
A. The breathtaking scenery. B. The diversity of creatures.
C. The rich colours of the organisms. D. The extremely hot temperature.
52. What did Cooney’s team intend to do
A. To study why passerine birds are sensitive to UV light.
B. To test whether creatures in equatorial areas are more colourful.
C. To figure out how passerine birds are distributed in the world.
D. To discover whether the colour diversity is related to the species diversity.
53. Which of the following might Cooney agree with
A. Bright colours contribute to the survival of birds.
B. Colourfulness shows the evolution of birds.
C. Colourfulness changes with latitude.
D. Bright colours are associated with birds’ sharp vision.
54. Which aspect of tropical colourfulness does the last paragraph focus on
A. Its causes. B. Its influence. C. Its importance. D. Its discovery.
55. What’s the best title for the text
A. The colourfulness of a region depends on its bird species.
B. The more resources a region has, the more colourful it is.
C. A new way has been put forward to test the colourfulness of a region.
D. The closer the birds live to the equator, the more colourful they are.

In the spring of 1992, I was eighteen years old, a senior in high school, and deep in dark depression. I was taking medication and receiving treatment. However, I didn’t seem to be able to dig myself out of the hole that affected me.
One night during that time, I had a dream that I couldn’t forget afterwards. I was walking down the middle of a dark street alone. Suddenly, a truck turned the corner and headed down the street toward me. As the truck drew near, I was pulled to the side of the street by someone. The person who saved me was over six feet tall and had brown hair. And his name was Corbin. At that time, a sense of peace appeared. Then the dream ended, but the peaceful feeling stayed with me.
Fast forward eight years, and I was married. Because of my poor health, my husband and I wanted to adopt a child. We finished our home study for the adoption process and were informed that a child had been selected for us. We would hear about him and his history before deciding if we wanted to meet him. Our adoption worker shared all the information she had with us, and my husband and I looked at each other and both said, “He’s for us. ” Then she took out some pictures and handed them to us. A three-year-old boy with brown hair smiled at us in the pictures. I had thought I would feel an automatic connection with the pictures, but while he was a cute kid, I found myself flipping (翻) through the pictures searching for an inspiration. Then our social worker told us, “His name is Corbin. ” There and then, I knew I was meant to be his mom, and it would all work out okay. Today, Corbin is over six feet tall and we live together happily.

A. Restore. B. Prevent. C. Stop. D. Abandon.
44. What challenge is Bista facing in his work
A. Lack of timely guidance from professionals. B. Delays in transporting the repair parts.
C. Conflicts between research team members. D. Pressure from administrative management.
45. Which can be a suitable title for the text
