(2024·唐山高一检测)As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it.Later, the second group remembered the information better.People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹).Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information.Rather, they remember how to find it.This is called “transactive memory”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet.Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organise large amounts of information so that they are able to find it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

D.We need a better way to get information.

Abacus (算盘) has been representative of Chinese wisdom for more than 1,800 years and is one of the symbols of ancient oriental civilization. It was a great invention in ancient China and had a profound impact in the earliest times, just like the computer in today’s society.
“The research of brain science and the teaching practice of China’s abacus all prove that China’s abacus has the function of developing intelligence potential.Abacus is not a simple calculation tool, it can also enhance children’s memory and attention,” Lu Ping, the president of Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Association of Shanghai, told China Daily.
Records show that Asia’s leading position in basic mathematical skills was largely due to the popularity of abacus.
People find that using an abacus can improve thinking and practical abilities in addition to providing convenient calculation. It requires the cooperation of the mind, eyes, and hand, and it is an excellent way to develop the reaction ability. So we should not pursue a single ability about the abacus to improve but focus on the training of learning habits, image thinking and the coordinated development of the left and right brain.
Indeed, the world has entered the electronic computer age.“In the electronic age, the abacus’s computational function is weakened, but the computer cannot replace its education and intellectual function,” said Zhao Qiumei, the professor of School of Accounting, Hebei University of Economics and Business.
From the 15th century, China’s abacus began to spread to Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and other places, which had the important influence on the development of mathematics in these countries.According to People’s network, since 2010, many American schools have offered abacus courses.Particularly in Japan, China’s abacus is highly valued.
In 2007, the British newspaper, The Independent, listed 101 inventions that changed the world, and China’s abacus which has enjoyed a history of more than 1,800 years ranked the first. In December 2013, the abacus was listed as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).And UNESCO calls it “another system of knowledge”.
8.What did Lu Ping stress about the abacus?( )
A.Its improving our intelligence.
B.Its improving children’s grades.
C.Its developing our maths skills.
D.Its making calculation convenient.
9.What should we focus on when using an abacus according to Paragraph 4?( )
A.Developing a certain ability.
B.Forming good learning habits.
C.Mastering mathematical skills.
D.Improving comprehensive abilities.
10.What did Zhao Qiumei think of an abacus?( )
A.It has been out of date now.
B.It should be used to calculate.
C.It will be replaced by the computer.
D.It has its advantages over the computer.
11.What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?( )
A.The long history of the abacus.
B.The great influence of the abacus.
C.The positive effects of the abacus.
D.The great contributions of the abacus.

With the development of science and technology, we settled into a new routine of opening up laptops and tablets to see classmates’ faces and hear teachers’ lessons.I transitioned quickly to seeing my clinic patients via telehealth and managing my research lab over Zoom.Humans have never been so dependent on technology as we have been this past year.
“Screen time” was not a helpful concept this year.I heard parents reflecting on the media use: Did my kids feel more connected to someone else’s experience, or did they feel more divided from others? Did I put down my device feeling more anxious and angry or feeling like life made more sense? Did I feel like my family’s behaviour was being secretly tracked, or did I feel aware and in control?
When life is stressful, screens can be soothing (抚慰的).When life is busy, screens can help us feel more in control and keep kids quiet. These are not new insights, but we’ve all experienced more of it this year as parents struggle with impossible role overload during a hard time.
Allowing technology to soothe us can distract from the family interactions that actually help build good relationships and make meaning out of stressful times. Now is our opportunity to figure out a balance between soothing away boredom and learning strategies to manage it in other ways.
As the pandemic wears on, this might be deciding where technology “lives” in your house, and where it “sleeps” overnight, so it doesn’t invade all of your downtime. It might mean seeing a doctor to work on strategies for you and your child to handle negative emotions and conflict.
With evidence that technology platforms are trying to identify our emotions for marketing purposes, it’s more important than ever to understand our emotional relationships with our devices.
As parents, it can be difficult to build these insights into technology when it is intentionally designed to not make us think and reflect. But as we emerge from this pandemic, I would love for parents to demand more helpful, honest design in the tech products we use.
12.Why does the author list some questions in Paragraph 2?( )
A.To doubt the effects of media use.
B.To show the benefits of screen time.
C.To question the value of technology.
D.To know the function of tech products.
13.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?( )
A.Our opportunity.
B.Technology.
C.A balance.
D.Boredom.
14.What should we do according to the author?( )
A.Achieve a balance.
B.Turn off our screens.
C.Design better products.
D.Keep away from media.
15.Which of the following words best describes the author’s attitude towards technology?( )
A.Pessimistic. B.Favourable.
C.Unsatisfied. D.Ambiguous.

这类词常见的有however, but, unfortunately, yet, while, whereas, on the other hand, on the contrary, in fact, actually等。
What are the speakers talking about?( )
A.How to fry fish.
B.How to make coffee.
C.How to remove a bad smell.
M:We deep-fried fish three days ago in the kitchen. But the unpleasant smell stays.
W:There’s a method you can try.Every time you make coffee, dry the left-over coffee grounds and keep them in small bowls, then place the bowls in the kitchen.
那么这类题中有另外一些表示特别强调和突出的信号词,如particularly, in particular, especially, more importantly, even, that is to say, to put it another word, surprisingly, much to my surprise等。
What is Nancy’s plan for Christmas?( )

【分析】 根据对话中的关键词Actually后的plan to spend Christmas at a homeless shelter可知,Nancy计划在圣诞节作志愿者服务。故选B。
What did the speaker particularly like?( )
A.The introduction.
B.The first chapter.
C.The middle section.
It opens well and the first chapter is fine but the middle section really stood out for me ...most interesting.

unfortunately, yet, while, whereas, on the other hand, on the
contrary, in fact, actually等。
What are the speakers talking about?( )
A. How to fry fish.
B. How to make coffee.
C. How to remove a bad smell.
M:We deep-fried fish three days ago in the kitchen. But the unpleasant
smell stays.
W:There’s a method you can try.Every time you make coffee, dry the
left-over coffee grounds and keep them in small bowls, then place the
bowls in the kitchen.
如particularly, in particular, especially, more importantly,
even, that is to say, to put it another word, surprisingly, much to
my surprise等。
What is Nancy’s plan for Christmas?( )
A. To have dinner at home.
B. To do volunteer work.
C. To visit some friends.
M:Nancy, are you having a big Christmas dinner at your house this
year?
W:Actually, I plan to spend Christmas at a homeless shelter with some
friends. We just want to do something for the people there.
【分析】 根据对话中的关键词Actually后的plan to spend Christmas at
What did the speaker particularly like?( )
A. The introduction.
B. The first chapter.
C. The middle section.
It opens well and the first chapter is fine but the middle section really stood
out for me ...most interesting.

As Internet users become more dependent
on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If
you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own
personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is
changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some
experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is
changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40
unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people
understood that the computer would save the information. The second
group understood that the computer would not save it.Later, the second
group remembered the information better.People in the first group knew
they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to
remember, and told them where to find the information on the
Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件
夹).Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than
the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the
information.Rather, they remember how to find it.This is called
“transactive memory”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor
memories as a result of the Internet.Instead, computer users are
developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning
how to organise large amounts of information so that they are able to find it
at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less
intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is
changing.

Abacus (算盘) has been representative of Chinese wisdom for more
than 1,800 years and is one of the symbols of ancient oriental
civilization. It was a great invention in ancient China and had a profound
impact in the earliest times, just like the computer in today’s society.
“The research of brain science and the teaching practice of China’s
abacus all prove that China’s abacus has the function of developing
intelligence potential.Abacus is not a simple calculation tool, it can also
enhance children’s memory and attention,” Lu Ping, the president of
Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Association of Shanghai, told China
Daily.
Records show that Asia’s leading position in basic mathematical
skills was largely due to the popularity of abacus.
People find that using an abacus can improve thinking and practical
abilities in addition to providing convenient calculation. It requires the
cooperation of the mind, eyes, and hand, and it is an excellent way to
develop the reaction ability. So we should not pursue a single ability about
the abacus to improve but focus on the training of learning habits, image
thinking and the coordinated development of the left and right brain.
Indeed, the world has entered the electronic computer age.“In the
electronic age, the abacus’s computational function is weakened, but
the computer cannot replace its education and intellectual function,”
said Zhao Qiumei, the professor of School of Accounting, Hebei
University of Economics and Business.
From the 15th century, China’s abacus began to spread to Japan,
Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and other places, which had the important
influence on the development of mathematics in these countries.According
to People’s network, since 2010, many American schools have
offered abacus courses.Particularly in Japan, China’s abacus is highly
valued.
In 2007, the British newspaper, The Independent, listed 101
inventions that changed the world, and China’s abacus which has
enjoyed a history of more than 1,800 years ranked the first. In December
2013, the abacus was listed as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by
the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO).And UNESCO calls it “another system of knowledge”.

With the development of science and technology, we settled into a
new routine of opening up laptops and tablets to see classmates’ faces
and hear teachers’ lessons.I transitioned quickly to seeing my clinic
patients via telehealth and managing my research lab over Zoom.Humans
have never been so dependent on technology as we have been this past
year.
“Screen time” was not a helpful concept this year.I heard parents
reflecting on the media use: Did my kids feel more connected to someone
else’s experience, or did they feel more divided from others? Did I put
down my device feeling more anxious and angry or feeling like life made
more sense? Did I feel like my family’s behaviour was being secretly
tracked, or did I feel aware and in control?
Allowing technology to soothe us can distract from the family
interactions that actually help build good relationships and make meaning
out of stressful times. Now is our opportunity to figure out a balance
between soothing away boredom and learning strategies to manage it in
other ways.
When life is stressful, screens can be soothing (抚慰的).When
life is busy, screens can help us feel more in control and keep kids
quiet. These are not new insights, but we’ve all experienced more of it
this year as parents struggle with impossible role overload during a hard
time.
As the pandemic wears on, this might be deciding where technology
“lives” in your house, and where it “sleeps” overnight, so it
doesn’t invade all of your downtime. It might mean seeing a doctor to
work on strategies for you and your child to handle negative emotions and
conflict.
With evidence that technology platforms are trying to identify our
emotions for marketing purposes, it’s more important than ever to
understand our emotional relationships with our devices.
As parents, it can be difficult to build these insights into technology
when it is intentionally designed to not make us think and reflect. But as
we emerge from this pandemic, I would love for parents to demand more
helpful, honest design in the tech products we use.
