For decades it's been hoped that seawater could be desalinated(淡化) to resolve the problem of drinking water shortage. Yet desalination plants still provide only around one percent of the world's drinking water. The progress goes slowly as desalination plants are expensive to build and use enormous quantities of energy to run. Energy accounts for one-third to more than half the cost of producing desalinated water.
In Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer of desalinated water, the process accounts for up to a fifth of the nation's energy consumption. But all this may be changing. A 2020 study found that, globally, the average cost of desalinated water could more than halve if solar power and battery storage systems were used. Across the world, there are around 180 facilities currently under construction, or in their design phase, mostly in the Middle East and North Africa. New sources of renewable energy like solar power mean it's getting cheaper to power energy-hungry desalination equipment in sunny and water-stressed areas.
Egypt and Morocco, for example, are building renewable-powered plants designed both to provide drinking water and to water crops. In South Australia, a self-cooling greenhouse design that uses wind to desalinate seawater for crops is part of a commercial project producing 15 percent of Australian-grown tomatoes. Scientists are also making major breakthroughs, such as new self-cleaning membrane(膜状物) technology, which improve the desalination process.
One start-up, Core Power, is developing nuclear-powered offshore plants. Another, Oneka, is employing wave power for desalination units. This wave of growth and innovation is set to continue. A global desalination equipment market valued at 17 billion dollars in 2023 is expected to grow to 32 billion dollars by 2030.
But serious challenges remain. Most facilities still use non-renewable fuels to power the plants, and the pouring of processed seawater into the sea poses a threat to sea life. These problems will have to be addressed as a thirsty world looks to the desalination industry to provide its fresh water.
24.What result(s) in the slow progress of desalination
A.High production costs.
B.Environmental concerns.
C.Lack of official support.
D.Few demands for fresh water.

If Confucius(孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 100 countries. These schools teach both the Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power to the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he won't soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.
28.What is the first paragraph mainly intended to do
A.To provide some key facts about Confucius.
B.To attract the readers' interest in the subject.
C.To show great respect for the ancient thinker.
D.To prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations.
29.What can we learn about the American students from paragraph 4

C.They take an active part in fierce Chinese competitions.
D.They fight for a chance to understand Chinese customers.

C.Chinese Culture for Westerners
D.Old Thinker with a Big Future
31.Where is the passage most likely to appear
A.In a biography. B.In a history paper.
C.In a newspaper. D.In a philosophy textbook.

Gifts and packaging play a crucial role in providing an income and educating visitors.
After enjoying a museum or art gallery, Milly Zi, a management adviser in Beijing, usually visits the souvenir shop to buy something to remember the visit. About a decade ago, Zi was attracted by a roll of sticky tape in the Taipei Palace Museum. The tape, designed in red, yellow and white, had four Chinese characters making a phrase—zhenzhidaole—a sentence of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, meaning “I am aware.” “The product has history and culture in it,” Zi said, “and it has aroused my interest in learning more about the history behind it.”
The latest digital technology is also helping museums to be more creative. In October 2021, the Hubei Provincial Museum released 10,000 digital copies of the sword of Goujian, king of the state of Yue during the Spring and Autumn period, a famous cultural relic on display in the museum. Their popularity can be gauged by how quickly they sold out. “All the copies were sold in just three seconds,” said Wang Xianfu, deputy head of the museum.
Digital collections go beyond the restrictions of time and space, making museums more open, interesting and modern. “It's a new experience, a combination of civilization and modern high-tech,” Wang said.
“The popularity of digital cultural relics has resulted in more museums exploring the concept. Digitized cultural relics are a new form of creative cultural products, which can be sold, purchased, collected and used,” Ma Xiaolin said, head of the Henan Museum.
“I think museums have two functions—to remember and to spread Chinese culture,” said Yu Lin, manager of the development department at Ant Group. “I hope new technologies will promote Chinese culture in a way the younger generation is happy to accept.”
32.Why did the tape attract Milly Zi
A.It was used by Kangxi.
B.It has a long history.
C.It is a digital cultural relic.
D.It was creatively designed.
33.What does the underlined word “gauged” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Judged. B.Guarded. C.Developed. D.Gained.
34.Why does the author mention the digital copies of the sword of Goujian
A.To emphasize the importance of Chinese cultural relics.
B.To make an advertisement for the Hubei Provincial Museum.
C.To illustrate a modern technology to make museums' work effective.
D.To popularize the ancient Chinese civilizations of the Spring and Autumn period.
35.What should museums do nowadays to make themselves more attractive
A.Open more souvenir shops.
B.Go digital with modern technology.
C.Produce more cultural gifts.

Many of the pros and cons really go hand in hand. 40 Remember, you have the chance to help realize the dream of a teenager and the chance to learn about another culture and to experience new traditions.

  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As I unzipped my lunchbox, the whole place was turned into a spicy curry(咖喱) dream. I immediately hid it under my seat, hoping no one would take notice.
Mom had really outdone herself with masala—our family's all-time favorite dish back in India. But today, it wasn't just about me and my lunch. A warm smile on his face, Ricky invited me, a new transfer student from India to New York City, for lunch.
“Ava, come sit here!” Ricky called out, gesturing towards a vacant seat.
As I made my way over, memories of those awkward lunchtimes when I studied in Kansas, one of the most conservative states, flooded back. I could still recall how everyone would wrinkle their noses and stare curiously when I unpacked my Indian food. It always made me feel like an outsider, like I didn't belong.
Therefore, before my first day in this school, I had demanded my mom pack “normal” Western-style food for me. I still remembered the look on her face upon hearing it, as she sighed in disappointment and confusion, “Isn't there a moment when you feel proud of your origin ” That was hurting, but not more hurting than others' giggles and whispers. Honestly, long queues were common in Indian restaurants in New York City, a cultural melting pot, but I wouldn't take that risk.
Unfortunately, this morning, Mom had forgotten to make sandwiches or any “normal” food, so I had to bring leftovers from our dinner. At the thought of the possible ohno-second(社死), I felt like being thrown into darkness.
However, before I came back to reality, Ricky noticed my sneaking(躲躲藏藏). “What do you have for lunch ” he asked, his eyes twinkling with interest. I tried to brush it off(搪塞), claiming I wasn't hungry. But Ricky wouldn't let it go, and before I could protest, he had the lid of my lunchbox open and I prepared myself for such familiar responses as “Eww.” or “What is that ”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
However, I did not get what I was expecting.

After school, I found Mom preparing sandwiches for tomorrow's lunch.

Dear Sir or Madam,
On seeing the information in the school newspaper, I sincerely hope my family can have the honor to be the host family.

In a word, I'm eager to provide an impressive trip for the foreign friend. I hope you can take my application into consideration.
Yours sincerely,

第二节
One possible version:
However, I did not get what I was expecting. Ricky took a deep breath, and closed his eyes, smelling. Instead of the usual stares and whispers, there was only interest on Ricky's face, asking, “Your mum made masala for your lunch ” Before I could make a response, he added, “I could be dying of envy! You know what, last Sunday, my parents and I queued up for three hours in the harsh cold on Fifth Avenue for the new Indian restaurant.” He enjoyed every bite, nodding his head in approval.
After school, I found Mom preparing sandwiches for tomorrow's lunch. I came over and asked if I could have palak paneer in my lunchbox, which made her a bit confused. Finally, I told her about my experience with Ricky. Mom's face lit up with joy. “I'm glad he liked it,” she said. “And I'm even happier that you're starting to feel proud of your roots again.” She paused and looked at me seriously. “Your culture, your traditions, and your food are all a part of who you are.” Mom's words had given me the courage to embrace my identity and share my culture with others.
