The plants are often thousands of miles from their natural environment, but they can live indoors without much effort. They are also an easy way for people to bring a bit of nature into their homes.// introduction the topic of the houseplants
Recently, a school in London has used many houseplants, but not to examine their leaves or learn how they produce oxygen (氧气). Instead, they used the plants to turn a classroom into a biophilic space. From the Greek word biophilic, the word biophilic means a love of living things. Biophilic classrooms allow students to be closer to nature during the school day. The school wants to research the influence of houseplants on students’ mood (情绪) and their ability to learn.
For the research, the school chose to fill a math classroom with lots of houseplants. At the same time, they put a huge picture of a forest on one complete wall of an English classroom and made no changes to a third room, a history classroom. Then all the children would run off to buy sweets. One day, he gathered the children together. He said, “Let’s have a competition to see who can manage money wisely. At the end of this year, tell me how you’ve used your money.”

However, he began to spend his money on more and more expensive things for himself. A few months later, he hadn’t a single penny(便士)left.
Alex saved and saved all the coins he was given, and at the end of the year he had collected more money than anyone. He was the clear winner.
There was also Julia. Poor Julia hadn’t a penny on the day of the competition. She had spent all her coins on her secret plan. Julia knew a poor violinist who played in the park, and she offered him all the coins for his violin lessons. Although it wasn’t much money, on seeing Julia’s excitement, the violinist agreed. Is your TV connected to the Internet What about your chair, or your fridge Probably they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, thanks to the so-called “Internet of things”.
The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. Earlier this year, A Samsung CEO spent a lot of time talking about the Internet things. He said that five years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, no matter whether it’s a remote control or a washing machine.
So, how do household (家用的) objects that are part of the Internet of things work Well, think of a common chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.
An Internet-connected camera could help people feel safer in their homes. It can know people’s faces and has an infrared sensor (红外传感器), so even if it’s dark it can see when someone passes by and send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who’s there. If the person is someone you don’t know, it can tell you that, too.
But according to MIT Technology Roview, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or security systems to the Internet, there may be some problems. For example, many early connected-home objects don’t have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked (被黑客攻击). Morever, it could be difficult to get these new machines to work together especially when they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 menbers by late 2014.
So, picture this: you enter your home. The temperature changes to make you feel comfortable. Your favorite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing It may happen sooner than you think.
8.What does the article mainly talk about
A.Advantages of living with the Internet.

How do we know the time A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could measure the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows from one container to another, When the water reaches a certain level, it moves a lever (控制杆) and this shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries, it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1,500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1936 the first quartz clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s easy for ordinary people to own a clock, People began depending on then more and more to ran business, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not missing appointments.

The third month of the school year has now arrived. Have you noticed how, when we talk about numbers, we naturally think of the number three
In some ways, “three” is a number that has magical powers. If you observe life closely, you should have noticed that this number is all around us. Everything has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The three primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—form the basis of all other colors in art and design. Traffic lights all over the world use three colors: red, yellow, and green. And there is the rule of three. It is an age-old writing skill. According to this rule, things can always become more satisfying to readers if they come in threes. Have you ever noticed how powerful brands use the rule of three to improve their marketing Just do it. I’m lovin’ it. Coke is it. All of these famous slogans (口号) are three words long.(And perhaps you have noticed that we have only offered three examples.)
But why is the number three so magical The human brain is very complex (复杂的). It enjoys thinking in patterns. It always tries to find order in unrelated information. If there are no patterns, our brains will create them. Three is the smallest number needed to form a pattern. As the old saying goes, “Once is luck, twice is coincidence (巧合) and three times is a pattern.” Moreover, our brains can only remember a small amount of information at any given time. An audience (听众) member will usually only remember three things from a speech. Do you want something in your talk to stick in your audience’s minds Put it forward to them in groups of three.
If we use the rule of three in our daily lives, we can make many things easier. For example, many people like to add lots of tasks to their to-do lists. Experts, however, suggest they should limit themselves to just three tasks. These top three tasks should be hard enough to be challenging while still being achievable. And the next time you are making New Year’s resolutions, consider listing only three things to work on.

13.What can be the best title of the text
A.“Good” Things Come in Three B.How Three Helps Businesses Succeed
C.The History of Number Three D.Why Three Can Help People Remember

①Gu Jinling, a 12-year-old girl from Beijing, has become a social media influencer with over 2.5 million followers, catching fans with her special Chinese-style costume dances. Viewers are crazy about her beautiful costumes and the rich classical culture in her performances. They are also amazed by her excellent dance skills at such a young age. However, as online users jokingly say, Gu is already an “old artist”. She began learning dance at the age of 3 and has been practicing for nearly 10 years.
②Gu trained in ballet at first but began learning Chinese classical dance at the age of 6, attracted by its costumes, which she found “even prettier” than those of ballet. However, learning classical dance well needs a deep understanding of traditional Chinese culture.
③Gu’s home is filled with books on Chinese wall paintings, which she studies the expressions and actions of the shown characters. When visiting different cities, she often visits museums, closely watching the main points in ancient sculptures.
④For Gu, paying attention to details is important in catching the key points of ancient Chinese style. For example, in the classic Dunhuang dance pose “Rebound Pipa” (反抱琵琶), the eyes must look downward before looking far away, creating a sense of paying no attention to the world. The “Floating Clouds” dance movement, which covers the use of long silk ribbons, requires unusual control to achieve the good effect.
⑤Another challenging character of Dunhuang dance is the changes of foot positions, including flexed (弯曲) feet, pointed feet, toes (脚趾) flexed on a pointed foot, and toes flexed on a flexed foot. “I don’t feel much pain doing these movements because years of practice have made them natural,” Gu said.
⑥However, a child’s body is naturally more flexible, and movements that once came easily now require greater effort and practice. Since last year, Gu has spent more time mastering basic dance skills and so on.

A.What dance skills Gu uses. B.How many followers Gu has had.
C.What makes Gu a social media influencer. D.How long Gu has practiced Chinese classical dance.

Ye Jiaying, also known as “Poetry’s Daughter”, passed away on November 24, 2024, at the age of 100. Ye was famous for creating, studying and teaching the beautiful art of Chinese poetry.
“In my view, studying classical Chinese poetry can help me feel deeply, imagine widely, and look far into the future.” Ye once said. “The study of poetry is not a goal that I go for, but a strength that supports me when I meet difficulties,” she wrote at age 87.
Ye was born to a family of intellectuals (知识分子) in Beijing in 1924. She learned classical poetry and English from a young age. However, Ye’s life has much sadness. At 92, she picked 218 ancient poems for kids and made videos to explain and read them. Even at 96, she gave talks at Nankai University, sitting in a wheelchair. Those who listened to her lectures said she made it easy to understand poetry and guided students to learn step by step.

Napping (打盹) at noon is popular. A nap at midday keeps people more energetic in the afternoon, so whether it’s summer or winter, most workers take a nap break.
A study recently says that compared with Europeans and North Americans, Chinese people take much more time in napping. In companies abroad, workers don’t have much napping time. Some Western companies start work later, sometimes at 10 o’clock, so people are able to wake up naturally in the morning. In such a case, a noon nap is certainly not necessary.
Researchers believe napping may be also caused by different eating habits. Food in European countries and America is mostly more meat and eggs than vegetables, while Chinese food comes mainly from farming. People in the north eat wheaten food (面食) and those in the south eat rice, which has a lot of glucose (葡萄糖). Normally we Chinese get on a full stomach after lunch, so the glucose-rich Chinese diet raises the level of blood glucose (血糖). It leads to sleepiness.
These ideas sound reasonable. However, they do not work on me. Even on days of eating a Western diet, instead of wheaten food or rice, I must take a nap at a quiet place.
According to an American sleep researcher, noon-time napping is a kind of self-protection, that helps to keep people energetic in the afternoon. That is to say, Western people need to take a noon nap, too. Taking a nap for less than 30 minutes is always a healthy habit for all people.
Now a napper is found everywhere: Customers napping on a sofa, on a chair, or on a seat in the train station. I fully understand them. But maybe your napping places make a difference. Those who nap in public places discomfit passers-by, which is not socially accepted. But a person who naps in a private space is regarded as a polite napper.
33.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A.Napping may be influenced by eating habits. B.Western people eat more meat and eggs.
C.High level of blood glucose leads to sleepiness. D.Chinese food comes mainly from farming.
36.Which can be a proper title for the text
A.Popular Napping Ways B.Taking a Noon-time Nap
C.Why Chinese People Nap D.Being a Polite Napper
