Antarctica (南极洲) is now a popular travel spot. A famous travel writer, Pico Iyer, recently wrote of his experience in Antarctica. “The visit gives me wonderful memories and also makes me worry about Earth’s environmental problems.” Iyer isn’t alone. Many tourists have this feeling that is called “Antarctic ambassadorship”.
About 100,000 tourists visit Antarctica each year. Though this number is tiny compared to tourism standards, their visits can still harm the environment. Most visitors go to the areas where penguins, seals, and birds live for only a few months per year. There’s no host community to protest (抗议) if visitor numbers get too high.
Even so, strong protections are in place. There are some strict rules in “Antarctic Treaty System” —the set of international agreements which were signed by over 50 countries. Tour companies have to follow strict environmental rules. For example, to avoid bringing dirt, seeds, or insects to Antarctica, tourists must clean their shoes and vacuuming their pockets before setting foot on the ice. They must also stay 5 meters away from wildlife so that animals don’t feel scared.
Almost all Antarctic ship owners belong to IAATO (International Association of Antarctic a Tour Operators), the group that manages Antarctic tourism. Recently, IAATO have to report how much fuel they use as part of IAATO’s efforts to make the industry more environment-friendly. Some companies now use special “hybrid ships”. These ships run on both fuel and electricity, which helps lower pollution. For short trips near the coast, the ships can use electric power, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and making them quieter and cleaner.
If you’re one of the tourists going to Antarctica this summer, enjoy the experience—but go with care. Be aware that no trip south comes without environmental cost and use this knowledge to make clear-eyed decisions about your activities both in Antarctica and once you’re safely back home.

In villages of African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, families often depend on children to get money through farming, herding, or informal work instead of sending them to schools. School attendance rates (入学率) in these areas drop below 40%, particularly during harvest seasons. What’s worse, because of poverty (贫困) and poor economy, over 50% of the population in these areas is badly in need of electricity (电).
To solve these problems, Yolk, a US company, designed the Solar Cow—a solar-powered station shaped like a cow. Set in schools, this creative system serves double purposes: providing renewable (可再生的) energy and basic education. The Solar Cow stores small-sized batteries called Solar Milks, which can only be charged (充电) at the station. Families take part in the program by promising to send their children to school regularly, where students put their Solar Milks into the cow-shaped station during class hours. By the end of the school day, the batteries are fully charged and taken home, providing families with electricity for based needs.
A single Solar Cow serves 150-200 students. Yolk plans to put in 500 units across East Africa by 2026, working closely with NGOs like UNICEF and governments to pay for the costs.
Since the first Solar Cow appeared in 2018, the projects in 12 Kenyan and Tanzanian villages have made great differences. School attendance rates increased by 42% within six months. Dropout rates during harvest seasons fell by 67%. Households saved an average of $15 monthly.
The Solar Cow shows how technology helps deal with interconnected (相关联的) social problems. By transforming schools into energy stations, it supports education, reduces poverty, and gets renewable energy. And this will be a replicable (可复制的) example for more similar situations. As Yolk’s founder, Chang Hee Lee, says, “When a child’s education becomes the key to powering their home, we’re not just lighting a room—we’re lighting a child’s future.”
8.What is the purpose of Paragraph 1
A.To introduce the background of the Solar Cow program.
B.To show the development of African village economy.
C.To give some information about the Solar Cow program.
D.To explain why Africa has low school attendance rates.
11.Which of the following is TRUE about the Solar Cow program
A.Yolk doesn’t need to pay for its cost.
B.It’ll be set in other places besides schools.
C.It can be copied to use in more other fields.
D.Its main purpose is to solve the electricity problem.
When you picture a day of hiking with children, you probably imagine a magical place. But the truth is that hiking with children is not always all sunshine and roses. So start by knowing your child’s hiking limits (极限) to make sure of a successful and enjoyable hike that they’ll remember.
Start small. Hiking is fun but it can be hard work for small bodies. Just as you wouldn’t run a marathon without training, you can’t expect your child to hike a long trail (路径) the first time out. Start your kids hiking with a small nature trail, then each trip adds a little more distance.
Be flexible (可变通的). There is no rule that you must get to that waterfall. When hiking with kids, it’s about the journey, not the end. As adults, we easily become end-driven hikers, and that’s exactly what can make the hike less enjoyable for your child, who wants to explore and take their time.
Choose a kid-friendly destination (目的地). Your children might enjoy climbing over big stones more than sitting to admire a calm lake. Or running in a big open field might be more interesting than staring at a distant mountain when hiking with kids. Kid-friendly hikes will encourage more future hiking from your children.
▲ . Set a family goal with a reward for miles hiked over a period of time. You can make it over a vacation, or over the whole summer. Your hiking kids should help set the goal and then update the chart after each hike. Children love seeing their progress in full color.
One of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child is love and respect for nature. Those early hikes you take as a family set the stage for a lifetime of exploration and joy. So get out and start hiking with children as early as possible. And know it’s never too late!
13.What’s the purpose of writing Paragraph 1
A.To provide the background. B.To lead into the subject.
C.To compare differences. D.To give good examples.
15.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.How to make the hiking successful and enjoyable. B.When to get out and start hiking with children.
C.Where to go and explore with hiking children. D.What to give children while a family’s hiking.

Suddenly, Mr Stapleton excused himself and ran off, chasing a butterfly. Dr Watson watched him run into the Grimpen Mire, leaping from one safe place to another. Then Dr Watson heard footsteps and saw a woman come along the path towards him. He guessed that it was Mr Stapleton’s sister, although she didn’t look like him at all. She was tall and dark and very beautiful.
Before Dr Watson could say anything to her, she said in a low voice, “Go back! Go Straight back to London, immediately.”
He stared at her in surprise, “Why should I go back ”
“I cannot explain, but please go back, and never set foot upon the moor again.”
“But I have one just come.”
“The warning is for your own good. Go back to London. I tell you, tonight. Quiet! My brother is coming. Don’t tell him what I said.”
Mr. Stapleton had lost his butterfly and came back to us. “Hello, Berly,” he said in an unfriendly tone.
“Hello, Jack. You are hot,” she replied.
“Chasing a butterfly,” he explained. “Missed him.”
“I was just talking to Sir Henry about the butterflies of the moor.”she said.
Then Mr. Stapleton invited Dr Watson to Merripit House and talked a lot about his own experiences. They asked Dr Watson to stay for lunch but he declined and set out for Baskerville along the path. However, there must have been a short cut because he found Miss Stapleton on the road ahead of me. “I’m sorry I thought you were Sir Henry,” she said. “Please forget what I said.”
“I cannot forget it because I am Sir Henry’s friend, and I’m worried about him. Why did you want him to go back to London Tell me what you meant, and I will pass on your warning to Sir Henry.” Dr Watson said.

My name is Vienna Cammarota. I’m a hiker (徒步者) from Italy. I have been a fan of Italian traveler Marco Polo since childhood, which later led me to become a tour guide. Years of hiking have helped me stay healthy. Even at 75, I still have no need for reading glasses.
About 20 years ago, my interest in China was started by a student from Beijing who stayed in my home. The connections we made and the friendships we developed made me more curious about China. Following that, I found myself interested in The Travels of Marco Polo, reading it over and over again to understand China through its descriptions. The description of the ancient Silk Road in the book attracted me deeply.
In 2018, the idea of hiking along the ancient Silk Road came to me, which encouraged me to plan a journey covering 22, 000 kilometers from Venice to Beijing, passing through 15 countries in three to four years. At first, my children thought it was impossible. However, as they saw the details of my plan, they gave me their full support.
My journey began on April 26, 2022. For more than two years, I experienced many challenges: bad weather, tiredness and lonely moments. I walked through mountains and waters, and crossed cities and villages in different countries. Along the way, I learned about the history, culture, and customs of each country I visited. As I explored the remains of the ancient Silk Road, I was shocked by the changes that our world has experienced.
I also witnessed that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), continuing the spirit of the ancient Silk Road, has helped more and more people across different countries.
Today, walking on the same “golden ancient route” with Marco Polo’s book in hand, I feel proud. Looking back on my journey, I want to tell friends of my age: Be brave in pursuing (追求) your dreams-nothing is impossible!
25.What can be inferred about Vienna’s journey
A.It was a smooth hike through wonderful landscapes.
B.It was a shocking hike because of terrible conditions.
C.It was a long trip witnessing the BRI’s influence.
D.It was a meaningful trip with government’s support.
26.What message does Vienna want to share
A.Technology has changed history. B.Never give up on your dreams.
C.Reading books is the best hobby. D.Keeping healthy is important.
Bright and early on the morning of our first full day in Antarctica (南极洲), L’Austral’s Captain Fabien’s voice woke us up as it came through a loudspeaker, “if we looked outside right now,” he said, “we’d see a beautiful sea of icebergs (冰山) in the golden sunlight.” My sister and I jumped out of bed, looking outside in amazement as we sailed past giant pieces of ice. We saw a group of whales feeding on smaller fishes. Next door, my parents were also waking up to the sights of a new day in Antarctica. Over breakfast, my sister and I excitedly told them about the whales we saw from our room that morning.
You might non think of Antarctica as a “family vacation” choice, but tour companies like Adventures by Disney make it possible!
Our trip started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day. After leaving Buenos Aires, we flew to Ushuaia on an Adventures by Disney plane. Then, it was the journey toward the Drake Passage by ship. After a speedy Drake Passage crossing, we reached Antarctica early, giving us extra time to explore.
To those who don’t know about Adventures by Disney, the fact that you can experience Antarctica with Disney might be surprising. During the trip. there were thoughtful acts, from stamped postcards to send from an Antarctica post office to a champagne (香槟) party on our final stop of the journey. Adventures by Disney truly thought of everything for us. Antarctica is a life—changing place filled with experiences that can’t be copied. We experienced seasickness when travelling across the Drake Passage, hiked up ice hills along—lovely animals, and had a taste of champagne. And honestly, it’s hard to imagine a better family trip!

Which works better in fighting against bad feelings, listening to music or doing sports In fact, simply listening to music or doing sports can cheer us up, but mixing them together gives better results. In a study, a group of German scientists tested some patients under three conditions: a group dancing with music, a group just listening to music, and a group riding bikes without music. The results showed that the first group were the least stressed.
Nowadays a lot of people take up dancing as a hobby in their free time. And dancing has been considered one of the best exercises to drive away bad feelings in recent years.
Dancing, which includes moving the body to different kinds of music, helps our bodies produce much endorphin, a chemical that makes us feel relaxed and happy.
Dancing can bring people together, too. Tango, Latin or other social dancing require us to move with others, which can improve our sense of social communication, according to IBSA, a Swiss scientific foundation.
Dancing also helps people let go of bad feelings. Studies have found that stress often has to do with sadness about the past or worries about the future. However, dancing helps you focus on the present, connect with your body, and free your mind for a while, as reported by Psych Central, a mental health news website.
Lauren Helper, a social worker in Virginia, US, pointed out that if people enjoy music of any kind, dancing can be a helpful way to reduce stress. She also said that dancing can take any form, whether it’s moving around the house to a song or going out dancing with friends. “The important part of movement is that it is fun,” she told Psych Central.
34.What can we learn from this article
A.Endorphin is a chemical that makes us feel stressed.
B.Lauren Helper prefers to go out dancing with friends.
C.Dancing reminds you of the past and future from time to time.
D.Tango and Latin can improve our sense of social communication.
DeepSeek is an exciting Chinese technology company working on advanced AI (Artificial Intelligence). Founded in 2023, its goal is to create smarter AI systems that can help humans solve real-world problems. The name “DeepSeek” combines “deep learning” (a type of AI technology) and “seek”, showing their mission to explore new possibilities in AI.
At DeepSeek, scientists focus on developing AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)—AI that can think and learn like humans. Unlike regular AI programs that do specific tasks (like playing chess or recognizing faces), AGI aims to handle difficult tasks flexibly (灵活地). For example, DeepSeek’s AI models can help doctors analyze medical data, assist students in learning math, or even control robots to do complex jobs.
One key project is making AI safer and more trustworthy. DeepSeek’s team trains AI to follow human values and avoid harmful actions. They believe technology should serve people in positive ways. To achieve this, they’ve created special systems where AI learns from both data and human feedback.
Education is another important area. DeepSeek develops AI tools that personalize learning. Imagine an AI tutor that understands your strengths and weaknesses, then designs lessons just for you! This technology could make education fairer and more efficient worldwide.

Here are four books in English that experts think might be just right for intermediate (中级的) learners.
Animal Farmby George Orwell This book was published in 1945. It’s quite short, and was written in a very clear way. Orwell said writers shouldn’t use unnecessary words, and his story of talking animals taking over a farm is easy to follow.
No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agencyby Alexander McCall Smith This is the name of the first book in a series of detective stories. The series is recommended by an international language school, which says that funny characters, interesting stories and simple language make these books great for learners. The stories take place in Botswana, and there are now more than 20 books in the series.
Refugee Boyby Benjamin Zephaniah English teacher Kieran Donaghy recommends this book about a young refugee who arrives in the UK from Africa. With powerful themes and simple language, Donaghy says it’s a good choice for intermediate learners.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Timeby Mark Haddon Donaghy also recommends this popular novel published in 2003. Although it’s not really for children, it’s told from the point of view of a young boy, and this means the language is easy to understand. In the book, the main character, named Christopher, tries to find out what happened to his neighbor’s dog.
39.Which of the following about No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is TRUE
A.Smith recommended this book to the language learners.
B.This book is the first of the twenty detective stories.
C.An international language school praised the book highly.
D.The series tells the story of the African young man.
40.What do you know about Christopher
A.He is the main character in the novel by Mark Haddon.
B.He does well in teaching learners language skills.
C.He is fond of solving mysteries about farm animals.
D.He writes the novel for both adults and children.
If you are on a bus or train, you’ve probably noticed that most people spend the ride looking at their cell phones. No doubt, they think doing nothing but sit there would be boring, so they prefer distracting themselves.
But results from new research suggest we should rethink that choice. We are probably underestimating (低估) how enjoyable and interesting it is to do nothing but pay attention to wherever our thoughts take us.
In a series of experiments, Researchers asked Japanese university students to stay alone in a room for 20 minutes. The participants (参与者) could think about anything while waiting. But they were not allowed to use phones, sleep, walk, or check the time. Before going in, they thought the experience would be boring. However, after the 20 minutes, they reported enjoying it much more than they had thought. Even in a dark, quiet room, they were more interested.
“People don’t realize the real value of waiting and thinking,” says researcher Kou Murayama. “Once they take part in it, though, they appreciate it.” Spontaneous (自发的) thinking often includes mind-wandering (走神), daydreaming, thinking about the future, or recollecting memories, all of which can have upsides. For example, daydreaming and mind-wandering have been found to improve our mood, creativity, goal-setting, and job performance.
Though it’s hard to know if these results with students would apply (适用) to the rest of us, Kou Murayama compared German and Japanese students and found both groups made similar mistakes in predicting how they’d feel. This suggests that it’s not necessarily a culturally-driven phenomenon (现象), though more research would need to be done to check that.
Overall, we should think twice before reaching for our phones when we’ re waiting or bored. Taking time to think freely can bring us more pleasure and advantages.
42.What can we learn from the experiments mentioned in the passage
A.Participants could sleep when they stayed in the lab.
B.Participants felt more interested than they had expected.
C.Participants could enter the dark room with their watches.
D.Participants predicted they would enjoy waiting and thinking.
44.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To present the results of new research.
B.To introduce a culturally-driven phenomenon.
C.To discuss the true meaning of waiting and thinking.
D.To advise us to think freely when we have nothing to do.
45.Which of the following would be the most suitable title for this passage
A.Mind-wandering: A Waste of Time
B.The Unnoticed Joys of Free Thinking
C.An Experiment on University Students
D.Cultural Influences on Our Thoughts
