A couple has recently placed their garbage can out for collection for the first time in 14 months, all thanks to their recycling skills. Richard and Louise Arnold have established such an effective routine that they only need to put their garbage can on the side of the street once a year.
Louise explained that making small monthly changes in her life has resulted in her family producing very little waste. She said, “It’s not as difficult as you might think if you start with small steps. We began with soap, switching from bath cream to natural soap without packaging. These bars are large enough that we cut them in half, using one for the sink and the other half for the shower. It’s both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.”
“So it’s actually quite easy. Just go around your house and think of little things you can do gradually, and you’ll start noticing the difference,” Louise added. Currently, the couple takes recyclable waste to the tip, donates clothes to charity shops, and brings soft plastics and batteries to a shop that accepts them.
In 2017, the couple established No Waste Living, which initially started as a weekend stall at the local market and has since developed into a website. Louise regularly writes a newsletter for her hundreds of subscribers. They also started selling eco-friendly products, ranging from non-chemical household cleaning and washing solutions for a “less toxic home” to bamboo washing-up brushes. Louise mentioned, “I started No Waste Living because I wanted to show our achievement s and lead by example.”
Although the family occasionally faces criticism, Louise remains determined. She said, “The main point of contention(争论) for people regarding new waste rules is having to drive their waste to a recycling center, which adds to their already busy lives. However, in the long run, you will create more space in your home, save money, and spend less time dealing with garbage cans.”
24. How did the couple start their waste reduction journey
A. By replacing small soaps with large ones. B. By using a small amount of bath cream.
C. By using unpackaged soap bars. D. By recycling soft plastics and batteries.
25. Why did the couple found No Waste Living
A. To bring eco-products to market. B. To inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
C. To treat recyclable waste from the neighborhood. D. To answer the call of their subscribers.
26. Why do some people dislike new waste rules
A They mean more work to deal with garbage.
B. They increase the cost of garbage collection.
C. They establish a set time for waste management.
D. They limit the daily amount of garbage for collection.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. A business - minded couple. B. The “less poisonous home” concept.
C. The global trend in recycling. D. A planet- friendly lifestyle.
C
Kids today have access to a whole range of technology that their parents couldn’t have even dreamed would ever exist. They’ve become skilled in using smartphones far quicker than us older generations and have easily taken to the “Hey, Google”, commands of today’s speakers.
But it seems that their understanding of some “old” technology is not so comprehensive. A new study, conducted by Explore Learning, presented a group of 10-year-old schoolchildren with pictures of classroom items that were commonplace in their parents’ generation.
More than two thirds had no idea what the overhead projector was called, while 72% couldn’t guess what it was even used for. Guessing at its purpose, they threw out ideas like “eye machine” and “walkie talkie”, with some saying it might be used “at the dentist” or “for experimenting”.
The confusion continued when they were presented with an old boombox (音箱) radio. One child shouted, “Imagine if you had this boombox and you were just carrying it around all day listening to music! That would be, like…harder!” Another excitedly called out to the old radio, “Hey Google, play Roar by Katy Perry.”
Commenting on the research, Amandeep Sanghera, Head of Maths and English at Explore Learning, said, our “Back to School Rewind” survey has uncovered a fascinating - and often hilarious - general gap. It’s remarkable to see just how quickly classroom technology develops. Items that were everyday essentials (必需品) for parents have become mysterious relics to their children in just two or three decades.
“This old-school tech might be gathering dust in the cupboard now, but it really shows how quickly things can change in our classrooms. It’s not just chalk that confuse today’s tech-savvy (精通科技的) kids - even the overhead projector is now a puzzling thing from the past!”
“While it’s amusing to sec children puzzle over these outdated technologies, it’s also a reminder of the incredible opportunities modern tech offers in classrooms,” Amandeep Sanghera added.
28. What is the aim of paragraph 1
A. To offer the background knowledge. B. To prove children’s high intelligence.
C. To bring up the topic of the passage. D. To encourage and attract more readers.
29. How might the kids react to the school tech their parents used
A. Uninterested. B. Puzzled. C. Disappointed. D. Proud.
30. What does the underlined word “hilarious” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Rare. B. Lasting. C. Abnormal. D. Funny.
31. What did the survey show
A. The wide use of advanced technology.
B. The different ideas of kids and parents.
C. The kids’ interest in advanced technology.
D. The rapid development of classroom technology.

Robots in space will be extracting (提取) gold from asteroids (小行星) within ten years if anew project backed by a Silicon Valley billionaire goes as planned. Peter Diamandis, the founder of Planetary Resources, said the company attempts to make the resources of space available to humanity.
The initial stage, to be achieved in the next 18 to 24 months, is to launch a series of private telescopes which will orbit Earth. These will be used to search for the right type of asteroids. The plan is to use commercially built robotic ships to extract rocket fuel and valuable minerals from the rocks that regularly pass by Earth. Diamandis predicts that they could have their version of a space-based petrol station up and running by 2025.
Several scientists not involved in the project argued that the project was daring, difficult and very pricey. They do not see how it could be cost-effective. But the founder of Planetary Resources has a track record of profiting from space exploration business. Diamandis was the first person to sell rides into space to tourists. “Before we started launching people into space as private citizens, people thought that was a ridiculous idea,” Diamandis said. “This is a long-term project. But it’s not a charity. We’ll make money.” The idea that asteroids could be mined for resources has been around for years. There are probably 1,500 asteroids that pass near Earth that would be good initial targets. They are at least 50 meters wide, and Diamandis figures ten percent of them have water and other valuable minerals.
Richard Binzel, Professor of Planetary Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says, “The idea might be many decades ahead of its time. But you have to start somewhere as it might offer a new perspective of saving the earth from being over explored.”
32. What is supposed to be the first step of the project
A. Launching robots into Earth orbit. B. Sending some telescopes into space.
C. Building a space-based petrol station. D. Using robotic ships to extract rocket fuel.
33. How did Diamandis use to make money from space exploration business
A. By extracting gold from asteroids. B. By providing space travels for tourists.
C. By being the first person to ride into space. D. By selling tickets to sce tourists' rides into space.
34. What does Richard Binzel think of the project
A. It is risky. B. It is complex. C. It is worthwhile. D. It is demanding.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Mining Asteroids B. Humans and Asteroids
C. Space Exploration in Progress D. The Project of Extracting Minerals

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. My assignment was to record the 400-meter race in the sports meet. All the students in our class were sitting anxiously except one a tall handsome boy named Tommy who was considered the one most likely to win the race. Even, unlike other competitors, he was quite relaxed, standing beside the track and stretching himself.
“Tommy! I bet you’ll win.” I yelled at him. “Just wait and see!” A big smile spread across his face.
“May I have your attention, please All the athletes are requested to proceed to the registration office.” A gentle voice caught our attention.
“Tommy, your show time!” I shouted and gave him a thumb-up.
Then, I saw all the athletes went to register, preparing for the game. Soon they were all on the starting line. Taking the best recording location, I raised my smartphone, ready to shoot.
With the loud sound of the starting gun, all the competitors threw themselves forwards from the starting line like arrows. Tommy quickly took the lead with his excellent explosive power from long-term training. But there was one problem for me-I had to spare every effort to control my excitement in order to keep my shooting picture stable.
“Come on, Tommy!” Still, I could hear the cheers of our classmates higher and higher. It seemed that Tommy had heard the powerful shouts and became full of strength. He kept adjusting his breath, maintaining a steady rhythm, and approaching the finish line step by step.
Finally, with the cheers of the audience, Tommy crossed the finish line almost at the same time with the second-place finisher. How I wish I could rush to him and give him a big bear hug! But I could not. I had to finish recording the whole race, so I waited until the last competitor crossed the finish line. Suddenly, I noticed there was an unusual noise from the crowd.

This robot is intended to take care of the elderly. It can cook meals at a fixed time which can be adjusted according to individual needs. It can also accompany old people in having a chat, playing chess, and doing exercise. Moreover, it can deal with emergencies.

Tommy was ranked second on the scoreboard. Feeling puzzled, Tommy immediately found the judge and pointed out this mistake politely. However, the second-place finisher insisted he was the winner. No one could tell exactly what had happened. Tommy was at a loss what to do, feeling frustrated. Then it suddenly occurred to me that I had recorded the whole process. Rushing to the judge, I showed him the video, which clarified the fact that it was Tommy who first arrived.
The judge admitted the error and announced Tommy was the real champion. After learning the truth, the audience broke into thunderous applause. Tommy shouldered his way through the crowd, gate ring me in his arms with a proud smile on his face. We both knew this was not just a victory of a race, but also a victory of sticking to the truth and daring to fight for it in the face of injustice.
