A Malawian woman, Gloria Majiga-Kamoto, was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for Africa — the world’s leading award for grass-roots environmental activists.
Gloria Majiga-Kamoto was then working for a local environmental organisation with a program that gave goats to rural farmers, who would use the goat waste to produce low-cost, high-quality organic fertilizer (肥料).The problem? The thin plastic bags covering the Malawian countryside.“We have this very common street food, chiwaya, which is salty and served in little blue plastics,”Majiga-Kamoto says. “Goats eat the plastic for salty taste and they die because it blocks the ingestion (摄食) system.”For her, this was the moment when it all changed. All of a sudden, she started noticing how plastics were everywhere in the Malawian environment and food system — affecting people’s living and health.
“I remember back in the day when we’d go to the market and buy things like fish, we’d get it in newspapers,” she says. But thin plastics took off in the last decade or so as new producers sprung up in Malawi, selling products like thin plastic bags at cheap prices. In fact, the Malawian government decided to ban the importation, production and distribution of single-use plastic in 2015.But before the ban could go into full effect, Malawi’s plastic industry appealed to the country’s High Court against the ban, causing it to be suspended.
When Majiga-Kamoto and her fellow environmentalists heard about this, they were annoyed. She organised marches and rejected the plastic industry’s argument that the ban would hurt Malawi’s economy — and even debated with an industry spokesman on TV.Finally in 2019, Malawi’s High Court ruled in favour of the ban.The following year, the government began closing down illegal plastic producers.
Michael Sutton, executive director of the Goldman Environmental Foundation, said, “Majiga-Kamoto’s fight with the plastic industry is a perfect example of the spirit of the prize.”
4.What made Majiga-Kamoto realise the problem?( )
A.Her experience with plastic-eating goats.

(2024·兰州高一下质检)What’s really behind the global rise in working longer and longer hours? We are all workers, whether we work in an office as managers, in a hot and noisy factory as workers or as housewives at home.
The important message is: Work is for man and not man for work!Through work, man develops himself, his personality and his sense of self-worth.It is also through work that man produces goods and services contributing and participating in the development and society.
According to latest International Labor Organization statistics, more than 400 million employed people worldwide work 49 or more hours per week.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, even Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, felt moved to describe his 47th birthday spent locked in his factory, pulling an all-nighter.“No friends, nothing,” he said.It might have been just another day in another 120-hour work week.“This has really come at the expense of seeing my kids and seeing friends,” he added.
Hustling over long hours and weekends has become a staple of start-up culture in Silicon Valley — hence, it has also filtered out to many parts of the world.
The problem is that this “long hours” culture likely defeats the purpose of getting more things done, or at least puts a very high price on doing them. There is plenty of evidence that working overtime reduces your productivity, and makes you feel and actually be less healthy. It also makes you more likely to develop a whole range of diseases.
Keep in mind that working for days at a time is not smart, even if you were Elon Musk. The news of his unhealthy work routine has not been well received by investors, and Tesla’s stock fell 8.8% shortly after the NYT interview, amid suspicions of Musk’s poor mental health.
8.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?( )
A.The value of working.
B.The purpose of working.
C.The necessity of working long.
D.The importance of working hard.
9.What’s the author’s purpose of giving the example of Elon Musk?( )
A.To prove CEOs work harder.
B.To show CEOs are very busy.
C.To show working long is common.
D.To prove working long is rewarding.
10.What does the author think of working long hours?( )
A.It’s valuable. B.It’s harmful.
C.It’s necessary. D.It’s understandable.
11.How did the investors probably feel when they watched Elon Musk’s interview?( )
A.Very satisfied. B.Very confused.
C.A little surprised. D.A little disappointed.

Most teenagers kill time playing video games, or surfing TikTok.But it’s not so for William Gadoury, a boy from Quebec.William Gadoury has been crazy about the Mayans for most of his childhood, ever since his grandparents bought him books about the civilization. What started as a hobby at age 12 snowballed into serious research, and he theorized that the locations of Mayan cities might correspond to stars in Mayan constellations.
Using ancient books, Gadoury analyzed 22 Mayan constellation maps and covered the positions onto HERE WeGo images of the Yucat n Peninsula, which to this day is home to large local populations and some best-preserved architecture from Mayan culture. He would track the constellations from HERE WeGo using special sheets, covering them onto the position of Mayan cities on a paper map.The teen was able to show that 117 Mayan cities matched up with the position of the stars, with the brightest stars representing bigger cities.
But when Gadoury was working on the 23rd Mayan constellation, he found a conflict: three stars, but only two ancient cities on HERE WeGo.The third star pointed to a location on the Mexico-Belize border. However, the area was covered with thick jungle, leaving Gadoury stuck.
Luckily, he asked Canadian Space Agency (CSA) for images from their RADARSAT-2 satellite.Indeed, there was a square, man-made-looking structure in the heavy forest.Gadoury then learned a fire had swept across the region, thinning out the grass cover. He found images from the agency, and eventually concluded that there was indeed a city there.
Gadoury’s findings eventually took him into the jungle in 2022 to search on foot, along with scientist Francisco Estrada-Belli.The team discovered a farming village deep in the Mexican jungle, which showed the “backbone” of the Maya’s long-term success, which was down to their ability to work the land and support large cities.
12. What are Gadoury’s findings mainly about?( )
A.The villages in the Mexican jungle.
B.The images from CSA satellites.
C.The origins of Mayan culture.
D.The locations of Mayan cities.
13.How did Gadoury carry out his research according to Paragraph 2?( )
A.By tracking the best-preserved building on maps.
B.By analyzing 117 Mayan cities in ancient books.
C.By checking star maps against satellite images.
D.By updating HERE WeGo on the Internet.
14. What made it difficult for Gadoury to find the third city of the 23rd Mayan constellation?( )
A.A thick forest. B.A forest fire.
C.Fund shortage. D.Bad weather.
15. Which of the following best describes Gadoury?( )
A.Cheerful. B.Intelligent.
C.Ambitious. D.Sympathetic.

Dr.Brown:Good evening, everyone. 1 I’m Dr. Brown and I’m
going to talk about air pollution in cities — what we all know as
“smog”.Please feel free to stop me if you have any questions. So, first
of all, a bit of history. The term “smog” was first used in the 1800s in
cities that had problems with smoke and fog.
Student A:Sorry for interrupting, but I believe it was in the 1900s.
Dr.Brown: 2 You are right.It was in the 1900s.Thank you.London
was one of the cities where smog caused big problems. In December
1952, it suffered from “The Great Smog”.It was a very cold winter,
so a lot of coal was burned at home and in the factories. The problem was
that there was no wind, so thick smog covered the city.Nowadays ...
Student B:Excuse me, but can I just ask — did the smog cause any
deaths?
Dr.Brown: 3 According to research, about 4,000 people are
known to have died as a result of the smog, but that number could be
much higher. It was terrible!Nowadays, smog still exists, but is
produced by chemicals coming from traffic and factories. However,
governments are taking measures to reduce smog as much as
possible. Now, let’s look at what smog does to our health ...
Student A:If I could just stop you again ... 4
Dr.Brown:Well, for example, factories must follow rules about what
chemicals they use.In some cities, when there’s smog, people have to
pay to drive in the centre. 5
A. I’m afraid so.
B. Sorry, I made a mistake.
C. Thank you for coming to today’s talk.
D. Can you give us examples of these measures?
E. Now, let’s move on to the impact of smog on our health.

National Bird Day
National Bird Day is a holiday which has been celebrated on 5 January. The purpose of this holiday is to bring attention to the situation of our feathered friends, particularly birds that are not native to the United States. This holiday is also a good day to appreciate the beauty and the diversity of these animals.
However, National Bird Day shouldn’t be confused with Bird
Day — one of the oldest bird holidays.Bird Day is a holiday that is
celebrated annually in the United States on 4 May and has been since the
late 19th century.
History
National Bird Day is a holiday which has been celebrated for over a
decade now.Bird Day, on the other hand, goes back a lot
further.According to the US Library of Congress, Bird Day was
established by Charles Babcock in 1894.
Facts About Birds
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature,
there are almost 10,000 different species of birds.Out of these species,
almost 900 of them are on the verge (边缘) of extinction and 4 have
been ruled as extinct in the wild.
Customs, Traditions and Celebrations
National Bird Day can be celebrated in any number of different
ways.Participants can watch birds — either alone or in a group, and they
can take part in one of the activities that exist for the protection of birds. In
schools across the US, children are often given the task of researching
about birds on this day or drawing a nice picture of birds for the
classroom.

A Malawian woman, Gloria Majiga-Kamoto, was awarded the
Goldman Environmental Prize for Africa — the world’s leading award
for grass-roots environmental activists.
Gloria Majiga-Kamoto was then working for a local environmental
organisation with a program that gave goats to rural farmers, who would
use the goat waste to produce low-cost, high-quality organic fertilizer
(肥料).The problem? The thin plastic bags covering the Malawian
countryside.“We have this very common street food, chiwaya, which
is salty and served in little blue plastics,”Majiga-Kamoto says.
“Goats eat the plastic for salty taste and they die because it blocks the
ingestion (摄食) system.”For her, this was the moment when it all
changed. All of a sudden, she started noticing how plastics were
everywhere in the Malawian environment and food system — affecting
people’s living and health.
“I remember back in the day when we’d go to the market and buy
things like fish, we’d get it in newspapers,” she says. But thin
plastics took off in the last decade or so as new producers sprung up in
Malawi, selling products like thin plastic bags at cheap prices. In fact,
the Malawian government decided to ban the importation, production and
distribution of single-use plastic in 2015.But before the ban could go into
full effect, Malawi’s plastic industry appealed to the country’s High
Court against the ban, causing it to be suspended.
When Majiga-Kamoto and her fellow environmentalists heard about
this, they were annoyed. She organised marches and rejected the plastic
industry’s argument that the ban would hurt Malawi’s economy — and
even debated with an industry spokesman on TV. Finally in 2019,
Malawi’s High Court ruled in favour of the ban.The following year,
the government began closing down illegal plastic producers.
Michael Sutton, executive director of the Goldman Environmental
Foundation, said, “Majiga-Kamoto’s fight with the plastic industry
is a perfect example of the spirit of the prize.”

(2024·兰州高一下质检)What’s really behind the global rise in
working longer and longer hours? We are all workers, whether we work
in an office as managers, in a hot and noisy factory as workers or as
housewives at home.
The important message is: Work is for man and not man for work!
Through work, man develops himself, his personality and his sense of
self-worth.It is also through work that man produces goods and services
contributing and participating in the development and society.
According to latest International Labor Organization statistics, more
than 400 million employed people worldwide work 49 or more hours per
week.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, even Elon Musk,
CEO of Tesla, felt moved to describe his 47th birthday spent locked in his
factory, pulling an all-nighter.“No friends, nothing,” he said.It
might have been just another day in another 120-hour work week.“This
has really come at the expense of seeing my kids and seeing friends,” he
added.
Hustling over long hours and weekends has become a staple of start-
up culture in Silicon Valley — hence, it has also filtered out to many
parts of the world.
The problem is that this “long hours” culture likely defeats the
purpose of getting more things done, or at least puts a very high price on
doing them. There is plenty of evidence that working overtime reduces
your productivity, and makes you feel and actually be less healthy. It also
makes you more likely to develop a whole range of diseases.
Keep in mind that working for days at a time is not smart, even if
you were Elon Musk. The news of his unhealthy work routine has not been
well received by investors, and Tesla’s stock fell 8.8% shortly after the
NYT interview, amid suspicions of Musk’s poor mental health.

Most teenagers kill time playing video games, or surfing
TikTok.But it’s not so for William Gadoury, a boy from
Quebec.William Gadoury has been crazy about the Mayans for most of his
childhood, ever since his grandparents bought him books about the
civilization. What started as a hobby at age 12 snowballed into serious
research, and he theorized that the locations of Mayan cities might
correspond to stars in Mayan constellations.
Using ancient books, Gadoury analyzed 22 Mayan constellation
maps and covered the positions onto HERE WeGo images of the
Yucat n Peninsula, which to this day is home to large local
populations and some best-preserved architecture from Mayan culture. He
would track the constellations from HERE WeGo using special sheets,
covering them onto the position of Mayan cities on a paper map.The teen
was able to show that 117 Mayan cities matched up with the position of the
stars, with the brightest stars representing bigger cities.
But when Gadoury was working on the 23rd Mayan constellation, he
found a conflict: three stars, but only two ancient cities on HERE
WeGo.The third star pointed to a location on the Mexico-Belize
border. However, the area was covered with thick jungle, leaving
Gadoury stuck.
Gadoury’s findings eventually took him into the jungle in 2022 to
search on foot, along with scientist Francisco Estrada-Belli.The team
discovered a farming village deep in the Mexican jungle, which showed
the “backbone” of the Maya’s long-term success, which was down to
their ability to work the land and support large cities.
