John B.Goodenough,an engineering professor from the University of Texas at Austin(UT-Austin),won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on developing lithium-ion batteries (锂离子电池).He was the oldest person to win a Nobel Prize.
Goodenough, who was born in 1922,identified and developed the key materials that can power portable electronics, leading to the wireless revolution.Today, batteries using Goodenough's inventions are used worldwide for mobile phones, power tools, laptops, tablets and other wireless devices,as well as electric vehicles.
Goodenough received a Bachelor's degree in mathematics from Yale University at 21 and a doctor's degree in physics from the University of Chicago when he was 30.He beat the odds against him, first overcoming dyslexia (阅读困难) as a child, and then the claim of a teacher who told him in his 20s that he had started too late to be successful in physics.
He began his career in 1952 at Lincoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),where he laid the groundwork for the development of random-access memory (RAM) for the digital computer.
After MIT,Goodenough became a professor and head of the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford, where in 1979 he discovered it would be possible to store energy in rechargeable batteries through lithium cobalt oxide (锂钴氧化物).That discovery helped develop the lithium-ion battery.
Goodenough joined UT-Austin in 1986,where his groundbreaking work continued.
At 98 years old,he still continues to push the boundaries of materials science. In spite of the lithium-ion battery being well-developed and available as a commercial product,it has its limitations. It can't be charged too fast or overcharged.Goodenough still wants to see some new developments.
“I hope UT-Austin still keeps me employed,” Goodenough once joked.

The conditions under which the experiment was conducted were quite challenging.
This is the project for/on which we have been working hard.
She is the student to whom the teacher spoke.
This is the time during which we need to focus on our project.
(during the time表示“在这段时间内”)
Do you still remember the day on which we met for the first time?
He is the person to whom I owe my success.
(owe...to...)
The city from which she comes is known for its ancient ruins.
(come from)
This is the pilot with whom my brother has worked for ten years.
(work可用搭配for,with,on,in,at等介词,但此处表示“和某人一起工作”,只能用with。)
4.有时为了表达更为明确具体的意义,可用“含介词的短语+which/whom”的结构,如both of whom,in front of which等等。
I invited 50 people to the party, most of whom arrived before 8 pm.
The company has two main branches, both of which are located in different countries.
1.定语从句中的谓语动词是不可拆分的固定动词短语时,其介词一般不提至关系代词前,如deal with,get through,hear from,listen to,look after,look at,send for,see to等。
The project, which she saw to personally, was completed on time.
The friend, whom she rarely hears from, surprised her with a phone call yesterday.
The reason for which(=why) he refused the invitation is not clear.
Great changes have taken place in the city in which(=where) I was born.
The meeting about which we had a heated discussion was finally canceled.
I like the way (that/in which) you handle difficult situations.
She followed the way (that/which) he showed her.
1.___________________________________(他对待孩子们的方式;treat)is very good.
2.Is this the car ____________________________(花高价买的;pay)?
3.She has two children,________________________________(两人都梦想当医生;dream).
The way (that/in which) he treats children
for which you paid a high price
both of whom dream of being doctors
4.The book ___________________________(他赖以进行研究的;base... on)is very famous.
5.The two things ___________________________(他不确定的;sure)were the grammar and some of the idioms.
6.The colleague,_____________________(我经常从其那里得到消息的那位同事;hear from),always shares the latest updates about the project.

Rising to 29,035 feet, the famous Mount Qomolangma had long been considered unclimbable due to the freezing weather, the obvious potential fall from cliffs and the effects of the extreme high altitude, often called“mountain sickness”.But that was to be changed by Edmund Hillary.
When he was invited to join the British expedition to Mount Qomolangma in 1953,Edmund Hillary was a highly capable climber. The glacier-covered peaks in his hometown in New Zealand proved a perfect training ground for the Himalayas. It was his fourth Himalayan expedition in just over two years and he was at the peak of fitness.
On May 28,1953,Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay,an experienced Sherpa(夏尔巴人),set out and reached the South Summit by 9 am next day.But after that, the ridge(山脊) slightly fell before rising suddenly in a rocky spur(尖坡) about 17 metres high just before the true top.The formation is difficult to climb because of its extreme pitch and because a mistake would be deadly.Scraping the snow with his axe,Hillary managed to overcome this enormous obstacle, later to be known as the Hillary Step.
At 11:30 am,the two men found themselves standing at the top of the world.“Not until we were about 50 feet of the top was I ever completely convinced that we were actually going to reach the summit.” Hillary later recounted,“Of course I was very, very pleased to be on the summit, but my first thought was a little bit of surprise. After all, this is the ambition of all mountaineers.”
Emerging as the first to summit Mount Qomolangma,Hillary continued by helping explore Antarctica, and establishing the Himalayan Trust (信托基金),through which he provided a number of beneficial services to the Himalayan people. He also left a sizeable legacy that mountain climbers have chased ever since. As a young climber said,“It was not just Hillary and Tenzing that reached the summit of Mount Qomolangma. It was all of humanity.Suddenly, all of us could go.”

Perseverance is a vital trait to possess in order to achieve success in any aspect of life._____________________________________________________ _______Perseverance involves the ability to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and push through adversity,no matter how difficult it may seem.
根据上文的 “Perseverance is a vital trait to possess in order to achieve success in any aspect of life.” 承接上文内容,其中的 quality 和上文的 trait 呼应,“when it is tough” 和下文中的 “no matter how difficult it may seem”呼应。故选C 项。
C.It is the quality that drives us to keep going even when it is tough.
One perspective on perseverance is that it is the ability to maintain focus and determination in the face of setbacks. _____________________________ ______________________________________________ The successful people are the ones who keep moving forward in the face of adversity. They understand that success often comes after repeated failure.
G.In other words, perseverance is about not giving up even when things don't go well.
Another perspective on perseverance is that it involves having a growth mindset. This means that individuals who possess perseverance are open to new challenges and are not afraid to fail. ___________________________________ _________________________________ They understand that each failure brings them one step closer to success, and they keep pushing forward despite setbacks.
根据上文的 “This means that individuals who possess perseverance are open to new challenges and are not afraid to fail.” D项中的 failure 呼应空前的 fail,They 指代空前的 “individuals who possess perseverance”。
D.They view failure as an opportunity to learn rather than a reason to give up.
_______________________________________________________________________ It also involves having the discipline to do so.This means staying committed to a goal and putting in the necessary time and effort, even when it is not easy.Successful people understand that in order to achieve greatness, sacrifices must be made and hard work must be put in consistently over time.
F.Furthermore, perseverance is not just about having the motivation to keep going.
In conclusion, perseverance is an essential quality to possess in order to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. It involves the ability to persist in the face of adversity, maintain focus and determination, have a growth mindset, and possess the necessary discipline to put in consistent hard work over time. ___________________________________________
A.With perseverance, you are closer to success.

Andrea Speranza wanted to be a firefighter long before she had the right word for her wish. After one childhood adventure at a construction site ended with an iron nail embedded (嵌入) in her leg and an emergency call to the fire department, she found herself in awe.“As they gave me the medical treatment,I thought they could help everybody and do anything,” says the now 52-year-old.
In 2000,Andrea Speranza achieved her dream of becoming a firefighter joining the Halifax Regional Fire Service. Her job was exactly as satisfying as she imagined it would be,except for one thing:she still hadn't seen another woman in her role—not in a magazine, not on television, not in real life.Speranza decided that she wanted to help young women see that they, too, could have a career like hers.
The result was Camp Courage,a program for girls aged 15 to 19 who want to learn more about firefighting. In 2006,Speranza and about 20 volunteers welcomed their first 17 participants, recruiting (招募) attendees through advertising in schools.Over the course of eight days, the girls discovered the ins and outs of being first responders:learning how to put out fires, deliver first aid and even use the jaws of life (救生颚) on a car.
Camp Courage now runs one session every year in Halifax and is free to attend. To offset costs,Speranza and her fellow campers fundraise by holding everything from car washes to comedy nights.Hopeful campers must also submit an essay describing how they plan to help their community,or a specific individual in need. And they have to deliver on the plan—from building a bench for a senior at a bus stop to launching a local chapter of the Kids Help Phone.
Hundreds of girls have passed through Camp Courage, and 36 percent are doing exactly what 52-year-old Speranza hoped they would:working as first responders across the country. This past summer, the camp held its first session for young women in Halifax,as well as its first national camp in Calgary with plans to roll out more in 2023.

Just being intelligent doesn't mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less intelligent doesn't mean that person will fail. That's one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth, who works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Like many other scientists,Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper,Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence. They had what she now calls grit(毅力).Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it.She calls it her“grit scale(等级)”.
In one study of people aged 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that grit increases with education.People who finished college scored higher on the grit scale than people who quit before graduation.People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
She then did another study on college students.Duckworth wanted to see how intelligence and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which measure IQ,to school grades and scores on the grit scale.Students with higher grades tended to have more grit. That's not surprising.Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.
But some people counter that this grit means success.Among those people is Marcus Crede,an associate professor at Iowa State University in Ames.He recently pooled the results of 88 studies on grit.Together, those studies tested nearly 67,000 people. And grit did not predict success,Crede found.
However,he thinks grit is very similar to someone's ability to set goals, work towards them and think things through before acting.
“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Crede says.“We can teach students how to study well.We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds.“I'm not sure we can do that with grit.”
5.What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Intelligence determines success.
B.Not all smart people will succeed.
C.Duckworth redesigned a grit scale.
D.Grit decides how intelligent one might be.

根据第一段中的 “Just being intelligent doesn't mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less intelligent doesn't mean that person will fail.”和第二段中的 “When digging deeper,Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence...calls grit(毅力).”
6.What might influence a person's grit according to Angela Duckworth's findings?
A.Lifestyle. B.Family.
C.Personality. D.Education.

根据第三段中的 “She also found that grit increases with education...People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.”
7.What does the underlined word“counter” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Comment. B.Disagree.
C.Recognise. D.Warn.

根据上文的 “When digging deeper,Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality...calls grit(毅力).”
8.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Grit can hardly be taught.
B.Grit can be improved easily.
C.Grit is strongly related to test anxiety.
D.Grit has nothing to do with school grades.

故选 A 项。

Miss England,Jessica Gagen,is not your ordinary beauty winner. She just added an impressive title,a rocket scientist,to her career.
The 27-year-old just graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and she has set her sights on becoming an astronaut.
But winning her title just a few months before completing her degree was no easy task for the energetic redhead from Kelmersdale. She is the first red-headed woman—and the first rocket scientist—to be crowned(加冕) Miss England.
Gagen was able to manage both her competition and her schoolwork but the stress of doing both left her with chest pains and sleeplessness. However, she didn't give up,just as she had been treated badly and always been made fun of as a child for having red hair.
“It was a tough five-year journey to get to this point, and I faced challenges before I even began,” Gagen said.“I think it's important that today's youth know that sometimes things don't go entirely to plan, and that's perfectly okay.”
Before starting at the university,Gagen studied a foundation year in physics while working on weekends because she didn't have all the courses she needed for the program. She began studying at the university in 2019 and all the course work went online. She did this while working full time at night.
During the course of her studies,Gagen saw that there were very few females in STEM and decided to make it her task to promote(提升) careers in STEM for women and girls on her social media.
In the first year, she won Miss Lancashire and placed second in the national contest but she really wanted to win to promote her task.“There's a lot of work that goes into becoming Miss England, and I really wanted to win because I knew I could use the platform to get more girls into engineering,” she said.

Curiosity—the desire to know,to discover,to learn.Inspired by curiosity, humans are found everywhere on our planet, and beyond it in space.Yet according to human behaviourist and author of Curious,Ian Leslie, although we are all born curious, not all of us bring this into adulthood, and we can lose out as a result.
As Leslie explains, curiosity shapes us from the start.By trying new things,we build knowledge, and want to know more.“We are born aware that we don't know stuff—we want to experience and discover.” However, the contrast between childhood and adulthood is clear.“We ask 40,000 questions a year between the ages of two and five,” says Leslie—around 110 each day;adults,in comparison, ask just 20.
Leslie's tips for developing curiosity begin with spending time with the expert—children.“Talk to your kids, and try to answer those weird, difficult questions they have—like‘What is air?’This makes you think about things you've taken for granted—it reawakens your curiosity about what's around us and how we perceive the world.”
So does finding what Leslie calls an“informal mentor”,through work or other circles, who is happy to share their expertise, from a skill, technology,to a field of learning.“Try to think of people the way children think of adults—as sources of secret knowledge,a great store of learning you can tap into,” says Leslie.
Leslie also suggests creating a“spark file”—a digital or physical notebook in which you collect interesting thoughts.“Fill it with facts you've come across, sentences you like, insights that strike you.Let it be random. And let it build.Over time you'll build up a rich source of inspiration, and you'll think,‘Oh,that's interesting, that relates to this...’ And suddenly your mind starts firing away with new ideas and ways of thinking.”
5.According to Leslie, what happens as we get older?
A.We gradually lose our natural curiosity.
B.We are less aware of our knowledge gaps.
C.We are unwilling to let others benefit from our ideas.
D.We may think asking questions makes people foolish.

根据第一段中的 “although we are all born curious, not all of us bring this into adulthood, and we can lose out as a result”可知,莱斯利认为,随着年龄的增长我们可能会逐渐失去天生的好奇心。故选 A 项。
6.Which of the following sayings might Leslie agree with?
A.Make your day's plan early in the morning.
B.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
C.A master can lead you into the door, but the rest is up to you.
D.If three of us are walking together,at least one is good enough to be my teacher.

根据第三段中的 “Leslie's tips for developing curiosity begin with spending time with the expert—children.”及 “This makes you think about things you've taken for granted—it reawakens your curiosity about what's around us and how we perceive the world.”
7.Which of the following is a characteristic of a“spark file”?
A.It is carefully organised.
B.It can help people connect ideas.
C.It only contains complete sentences.
D.It can help people improve their memory.

根据最后一段中的 “Leslie also suggests creating a‘spark file’—a digital or physical notebook in which you collect interesting thoughts.”及 “Over time you'll build up a rich source of inspiration, and you'll think,‘Oh,that's interesting, that relates to this...’”
8.What is the writer's aim in writing this passage?
A.To prove Ian Leslie's arguments.
B.To summarise Ian Leslie's viewpoint.
C.To question Ian Leslie's conclusions.
D.To introduce Ian Leslie's achievements.

A
A year after Walt Disney made history with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, his artists were struggling to find the right design for the woodland backgrounds of Bambi, the tale of a young deer. The film's production team realised they needed a change to the style that highlighted almost all of the leaves, flowers and mushrooms in the woods of Snow White.
Soon they got their inspiration from Tyrus Wong, whose work was on display as a new exhibit at New York City's Museum of Chinese in America. In 1938,the Walt Disney Studios hired him to draw the frames between the main drawings of the animators. After reading the story of Bambi,he saw an opportunity to break out of his humdrum(乏味的) job.He said to himself,“This is all outdoor scenery. And I'm a landscape painter. This will be great!”
Inspired by Chinese landscape paintings,he used watercolour and pastel (蜡笔) to make sketches that brought the feeling of forest scenes with simple strokes of colour and special attention to light and shadow.Wong's sketches attracted Disney and became the guide for Bambi's background artists, who were later trained to imitate his style.“His expression was a great leap forward for the medium,” wrote John Lasseter, the chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.“Where other films were literal,Bambi was expressive and emotional.” In 2001,Wong was named“Disney Legend”,and he received the recognition as the true lead artist.
He pursued art all his life and still made art during his retirement, including toy animals from recycled materials and handmade kites that he regularly flew off the Santa Monica Pier in California.“People admired his work because of Bambi, but Bambi was just a really small part of his life,”said his youngest daughter.“He considered himself not a great artist but a lucky artist, who was at the right place at the right time.”

Scientists have made great contributions to humanity. But how have they influenced our personal lives? Do kids in your classroom even know when Einstein lived? You may be wondering:Why is it important to teach kids stories about modern-day scientists?
First, stories of scientists can encourage kids.Chris Hadfield is a Canadian who went to space, and he's a real guitar-playing person. He makes singing videos on the website. His story can make kids think scientists are also common people.Hearing scientists' stories makes kids think that they can do that too.
But not only that, the stories of famous scientists can encourage kids to explore and never give up.Bill Nye was continuously refused when applying to be an astronaut. But up to now,he has made a lot of successes in his role as a popular science educator and engineer. What's more,it's no secret that scientific discoveries require trying, and trying again.
Another way some scientists can encourage kids is through their diversity.Neil deGrasse Tyson, for example,is an African American, which is rare in his field.Such stories can make kids think anyone can be a scientist.
It's important to note that scientists don't need to be“gifted” or“good” at school.Often we consider a scientist as being an extremely smart kid at school. That doesn't have to be true. They just need to have a great interest in science.Telling kids stories of scientists can encourage them to show interest in science. As long as they are interested, they are likely to become a scientist in the future.
Modern scientists teach kids that knowledge builds upon the foundation others have laid. This is important—no one can do it alone.Scientists' stories can encourage today's young scientists to keep trying. They'll be encouraged not to give up on the dream of exploring and making discoveries.Even if they haven't made important discoveries, their research may help the following scientists.
5.What can Chris Hadfield's story tell us?
A.Scientists are interested in different things.
B.Kids should have a hobby of their own.
C.Scientists can be ordinary like people around us.
D.Kids should consider scientists as their models.

根据第二段中的 “His story can make kids think scientists are also common people.Hearing scientists' stories makes kids think that they can do that too.”
6.Which of the following will the author agree with?
A.Scientists are not necessarily very smart at school.
B.Not all scientists really show interest in science.
C.Scientists are usually good at their schooling.
D.Talented kids are more likely to become scientists.

根据倒数第二段中的 “Often we consider a scientist as being an extremely smart kid at school. That doesn't have to be true. They just need to have a great interest in science.” 故选 A 项。
7.What can be learnt according to the last paragraph?
A.Scientists should help each other.
B.A scientist should never give up trying.
C.It is necessary for scientists to make discoveries.
D.New scientific discoveries may be based on others' findings.

根据最后一段中的 “Modern scientists teach kids that knowledge builds upon the foundation others have laid.”以及 “Even if they haven't made important discoveries, their research may help the following scientists.”
8.What is the text mainly about?
A.Why scientists are important to us.
B.Why kids love stories of scientists.
C.Why scientists can make great discoveries.
D.Why kids should be taught about scientists.

文章第一段用一个问题 “Why is it important to teach kids stories about modern-day scientists?”
