Reading (I)
I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. learn about the unusual thing that happened to Millie and Amy;
2. use reading skills to guess the meanings of the new words, to get the general idea and details.
II. Teaching contents

Step 1 Lead-in
T: Look at the screen. How do you feel?
1. Are there any ghosts in the world?
2. Are you afraid of ghosts?
3. Do you like reading ghost stories?

Step 2 Presentation
1. Read and guess
T: Today let’s share a ghost story. First, read the title, look at the picture and answer the following questions:
(1) Where did the story happen?
(2) Who might see the ghost?
(3) How did they feel?

2. Fast reading
T: Look through the story quickly and silently, and tell me: What was the ghost in Sunshine Park?

3. Difficult words
T: Read the story silently again and circle the words you don’t understand.
T: Here are some words in the story. Find the meaning of each word by circling the correct letter.

4. Further reading
T: Read the story with your partner. Try to divide the story into three parts and discuss the main idea of each part with your partner.
5. Detail reading
T: Read the first part. Ask and answer in pairs according to the table on the screen.
T: How did Andy search for the cat? Read the second part by yourselves loudly and try to fill in the blanks with some verb phrases.
T: Read the third part in groups of four and try to guess what questions I will ask. Close your books and let me see who has a good memory.

Step 3 Practice
1. Put sentences in the correct order
T: So you know the story in the park, right? Millie wrote some sentences about what happened, but they are not in the correct order. Read these sentences carefully and then help Millie put the sentences in the correct order. Write the numbers 1-7 in the boxes.
T: Read the sentences in the correct order, and try to get the main idea of the story by filling in the blanks. Pay special attention to the simple past tense of the verbs.
2. Correct Millie’s sentences
T: Millie is telling her friend Wendy on the phone about what happened in the park, but Wendy cannot hear her clearly. Write a T if a sentence is true or an F if it is false. Check the answers with your partner.
3. Help Andy answer Henry’s questions
T: Henry, Andy’s friend, is asking Andy about the “ghost”. Help Andy answer his questions.
T: Work in pairs. One is Henry and the other is Andy, and try to act the dialogue out.

Step 4 Production
Role play
T: I think you know the story very well now. Let’s work in groups of four and act the story out. You can choose to be Amy, Millie, Andy or the narrator in your group. Remember to use your body language and expressions.

Step 5 Summary
