I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. learn about some unusual things;
2. talk about amazing things with new sentence patterns.
II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: same, birth, earth, back, fat, fact, amazing, times, bone, the same size, from birth, stop doing sth, in the back of
2. New structures: Fish sleep with their eyes open.
Our nose and ears never stop growing.
The sun is about 1,300,000 times larger than the Earth.
III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
1. The usage of “with” as adverbial;
2. The usage of “times” in comparison;
3. The difference between “stop doing” and “stop to do”;
4. How to describe something amazing.

Comic strip
Step 1 Presentation
1. Listen and answer
T: Eddie also sees something amazing. Can you guess what he sees?
T: Listen to the tape and check your answer. Is it a UFO? What do they see actually?
T: Read the dialogue after the tape and answer: Why does Eddie think it is a UFO?
2. Read in roles
3. Language points
T: Do you have any difficulties? I have a question.
What does “Come on” mean in this sentence? Does it have other meanings? Can you put the Chinese sentence into English?
Look at the word “saw”. Can you guess its meaning? (解释saw是see的过去式)
【设计意图:让学生通过上下文猜测词意,鼓励他们把字词放在句子或语篇中理解。come on 经常会用在口语中,因此可适当拓展该词组的含义。saw是see的过去式,本单元的语法是一般过去时,此课不需展开讲解,只要通过猜测词意的方式告知学生这是什么即可。】
Step 2 Practice
1. Act it out
T: Now work in pairs and try to act the dialogue out. You can use your own words if possible.
2. Retell the dialogue
T: Now let’s review the story and fill in the blanks to complete the passage.
【设计意图:通过视频引出Eddie和Hobo的对话,让学生明白本堂课的主要内容是关于amazing things。表演对话有助于学生练习口语并活跃课堂氛围。】
Welcome to the unit
Step 1 Lead-in
T: How lovely Eddie is. He thinks the plane is a UFO. How amazing! In fact, the world is full of amazing things. Do you know anything amazing?
Look at the pictures. What does the man use to make the bus move? What do you think of it?
Look at the shoe. How is it? Is it amazing?
Where is the girl standing? What do you think of the picture?
What is the car like? Is it funny?
What does the mountain look like? What do you think of it?
How much food do we eat during our lives? Can you guess? That’s the weight of about six elephants. We eat so much food in our lives. How cool!
【设计意图:通过图片介绍一些令人惊叹的事或物,激发学生的兴趣,引出描述感叹事物时可以运用的形容词,并为进入书本内容做铺垫。】
Step 2 Presentation
1. Fun facts
T: Let’s talk about elephants. Are there any bones in the back of elephants’ feet?
Something about fish. How do fish sleep in water?
There is also something amazing about people’s eyes. Look at the baby’s and the old lady’s eyes. Are they the same size? Do our eyes grow as we grow up?
What about our Earth and the Sun. Are they the same size? Which one is bigger, the Earth or the Sun?
2. Match the pictures with the sentences
3. Read and complete
T: Read the sentences on the screen and complete them with your partner.
4. Language points

5. Listen and answer
T: Kitty and Amy are talking about the fun facts about these pictures. Which pictures are they talking about? Let’s listen to their dialogue.
Read the dialogue and answer: What do they think of these fun facts?
Can you tell me other adjectives to describe amazing things?
【设计意图:通过听、读对话了解谈论令人惊叹的事物的对话模式,为学生自己编写对话做铺垫。】
Step 3 Production
1. Talk in pairs
T: Talk about the pictures in Part A in pairs. You can use Kitty and Amy’s dialogue as a model. You can also talk about other amazing things.
2. Make up your own amazing story
(1) Work in groups of four or five;
(2) Take turns to say one or two sentences;
(3) One of the group members write down what all the members say to make up a complete story;
(4) Be amazing and interesting!
3. Show your amazing story to us
【设计意图:从两人对话到小组活动,由易到难,在巩固课本所学的前提下,发挥学生想象力,编一个令人惊叹的故事。】
V. Homework
1. Try to find more amazing things in the world.
2. Recite the sentences and the dialogue.
