A Trip to Remember
Last July my parents took me to the Hawaiian Islands. We flew across the Pacific for almost nine hours. When the plane landed, soft music welcomed us at the airport. “That’s the ukulele,” Dad said. Outside, gentle winds carried the smell of the sea.
On the second day we joined a volunteer project to clean up a black-sand beach. While working, I met Laura, a girl from Canada. She told me her family used the “mauka–makai” system when they asked for the way to the beach. “It sounds strange, but it works,” she laughed.
In the evening we climbed a small hill mauka. The sky turned orange, and the town below lit up like coloured stars. I suddenly understood why Hawaiians love saying “mauka” and “makai”: the mountain and the sea are their compass and home.
The trip taught me that every place has its own language of direction, and learning it opens the door to friendship.
