Dear Dennis,
How’s your summer vacation My family and I arrived in Australia two days ago and now we are travelling around the country. Yesterday a funny thing happened. On the way to the Blue Mountains, we came across a big kangaroo (袋鼠) sitting in the middle of the road. That was really funny, wasn’t it We stopped the car and waited for it to leave, but suddenly it jumped over our car! We laughed and laughed!
When we got to the mountains, it was almost dark. How quiet it was in the mountains! At night we stayed in a tent in the Blue Mountains. There were some strange noises outside our tent. The next morning we found some koalas in the tree outside! They climbed up the tree very slowly. They were cute! All my family loved them very much. My sister Elle really wanted to take a koala home with us!
Now we are going to Ayers Rock. We are all excited about it. I’ll write to you again when I get there. I’m looking forward to your reply. Have a good day!

Cats love fish, but they hate water—these two commonly believed ideas seem to contradict (与……矛盾) each other. But do cats really hate water
Although furry cats at home can enjoy fish while staying clean and dry, wild cats are willing to get their paws wet to catch a tasty treat. This shows that it is a mistake to believe that all cats hate water, says Wailani Sung, a veterinary behaviorist (动物行为学家) from California. She explains that each cat is different—some cats like water, while others don’t. This is similar to dogs, according to Carlo Siracusa, another veterinary behaviorist. He points out that though many dogs like water, some dogs dislike water, just like cats.
One reason why people think cats dislike water is that most pet cats live indoors, while dogs are often taken outside. This gives dogs more chances to get used to water. Another reason is that most pet dogs are regularly washed, but cats usually clean themselves with their tongues—no water needed.
Though cats may avoid water, they have good reasons for doing so. Cats have special hairs on their bodies that help them feel the world around them, and getting these hairs wet may disturb (干扰) how they sense the environment. Wet fur can also make cats feel cold, as their fur helps keep them warm by trapping (锁住) air.
Cats, as prey animals, also avoid situations that seem dangerous or unpredictable. Even though they are skilled hunters, they can be vulnerable to other animals. This makes them uncomfortable in situations where they feel unsafe. Siracusa explains that cats usually dislike new things they cannot control. Being in water could be one of these things.
Since cats can clean themselves with their tongues, there is usually no need to worry if your cat avoids water. Healthy cats can take care of their own fur. Siracusa suggests that if you want to wash your cat, you should let them get used to water slowly, so the cat feels safe during the process.
House cats may need more encouragement to drink water. Over time, cats get used to getting most of their water from the food they eat, rather than having to find it in the dry environments in which they grow up. Siracusa suggests providing several water bowls around the house, with at least one placed away from the feeding area.
Using water to punish cats for bad behavior is not a good idea, no matter how the animal feels about water. Sung explains that our reaction is often too late for cats to understand, which can lead them to feel scared of their owners. Instead, Sung advises people to use positive ways like a reward.
49.Why does the writer mention dogs in Paragraph 2
A.To explain why cats tend to avoid water more often than dogs in everyday life.
B.To show animals of the same type can have different feelings towards water.
C.To suggest that dogs are usually given more chances to get used to water.
D.To tell that cats and dogs have some cleaning habits in common.

A.Be greatly supported by. B.Be deeply respected by.

A.Owners should let their cats get used to water quickly to feel safe.
B.Owners can improve cats’ behavior by punishing them with water.

D.Cats may avoid water because getting wet makes it hard for them to stay warm.

Homegrown Produce
You don’t need lots of space to grow produce. You can grow it in a pot or in a window box. It’s just as good and just as fresh.
You don’t have to wait for it to come on a boat or a plane for a long time. You can just go to your gardens and pick a load of fresh peppers or tomatoes anytime. Think about what you can do with your homegrown produce. You can roast it or toast it. You can bake it or put it in a pie. Anyway, you can cook it in any way you like.
Homegrown produce is fresh! Eating fresh produce is very important. You and your family can eat the green produce that you grow in the garden. That is good for your health.
But how do people have more fresh produce to eat Some people like a program called Plant a Row. Here is how this program works.
People in this program usually plant two or more rows of plants. They plant one row of beans for their family and they plant the other row to give to a food bank.
