“You have three sisters—Amy, Beth and Meg.” Laurie continued.

“You call each other’s names when you are in the garden. Sometimes I can see you all around the table with your mother. She has a very kind face. I like looking at her. I haven’t got a mother.”
Jo felt sad when she heard this.
“Why don’t you come and visit us ” she said, “It isn’t good for you to stay in this house all the time.”

Eighty years ago, when I was 13, I wrote my first letter to Paul and Renee. Paul was my age, and his sister Renee was two years younger; they lived in France. I loved learning languages, so I was happy when my French teacher introduced us as pen pals.
Getting a letter from another country was exciting, and I eagerly awaited their reply. Since their English wasn’t great, after six months, we all started writing in French, which really helped me improve my French.
In 1949, I went to France on holiday to meet them, but Paul had been called up for military service (服役), and Renee was away skiing. Despite this, Renee’s family treated me very well. Over the following years, I visited several times. The first time I met Renee, she picked me up at the station, and we became good friends right away.
I never got to meet Paul. Later, Renee told me he had passed away shortly after leaving the army. Renee and I kept writing to each other, and our friendship grew stronger. We shared stories about our families, hobbies, and life challenges. I moved to South Africa for a while, got married, had children, and changed jobs, but we kept writing letters throughout it all.
Renee never married and worked as a nurse for many years. During my visits, I got to know her whole family, including her aunts, uncles, and distant cousins. I felt so welcome that I never felt like an outsider.
Now, at 93, I still write to Renee. She finds it hard to write now, so she calls me instead. While most people don’t seem to have time for letters anymore, I still enjoy writing them.
Writing to Renee has given me a broader view of the world beyond the UK. Most importantly, it has given me the longest friendship I’ve ever had.

Friends are important in our lives. We need to share happiness and sadness with our friends. Friends can learn from each other and help each other become better people. However, some people find it hard to make friends.
Why A new study shows that some people feel nervous when they meet people they aren’t familiar (熟悉的) with. They are afraid to talk to strange people.
But don’t worry. There are some ways to solve these problems. First, we should be brave enough to step outside our comfort zone (舒适圈). Second, we should accept some social invitations. Making friends online is not enough for most people to develop true friendships. Finally, we need to take action. As the old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” We need to actively talk to others and try to meet people with similar interests. If you are shy, start by saying “hello” to others with a smile. You can also join some clubs you are interested in to make new friends.
We should keep trying to make friends. It may be hard at first. But if we follow these steps and try to be brave, we can make good friends.

Dear Emma,
I have two good friends, Lily and Tom. We are all in the same grade, but we have some differences.
Lily is taller than me, but I am smarter than her. We both like reading, but she reads faster than me. I often need more time to finish a book. However, I am better at maths than she is. When we do our maths homework together, I can always help her solve the difficult problems.
Tom is shorter and thinner than both Lily and me. He is not as good at sports as we are, but he is funnier than us. He always makes us laugh with his jokes.

③At the age of four years old, trees begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough to face many difficulties (困难) later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults (成年人). They grow more slowly and begin to produce (生长) flowers and fruit.
④When the tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. It gives us shade and provides a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we all learn how to protect the adult tree, it will live healthily for many years.
⑤Little by little, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, older trees are still very important in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it dies, it can be a home to small animals.
⑥In many ways, the life of a tree is similar (相似的) to our own life. When looking at the life of a tree, we should enjoy every minute of its life and take care of the tree!

In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united because they wanted a dog, Misty. And they promised to walk her every day.
But from the second day, neither thought to walk the dog again. I was slow to accept that I would be the one to feed and clean her. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, “The middle-aged woman is the stupidest one.”
Quickly, she and I developed something special. She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, and then wait, trusting I would understand her, which I almost always did.
Even so, part of me continued to hate the walking duty Joe and Becky had promised to carry out. It nearly drove me mad. “Not fair!” I’d loudly remind everyone I knew.
On January 1, 2007, Joe’s doctor said an unthinkable word—leukemia (白血病). With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with him in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old life remained.
Save one—Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when my friends wanted to help walk her, I refused because I knew they were busy.
As months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to clear my head.
After Joe died in 2009. The truth is, after these years, I’ve come to enjoy my walks with Misty. She reminded me that no matter how hard the present or unpredictable the future, there’s almost always some joy in my life.
65.What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 and 4
A.The writer always shouted at Misty while walking her.
B.The writer loved Misty, but she didn’t want to walk her.
C.The writer always hoped that Misty could understand her.
D.The writer didn’t want to walk Misty because it cost time.
66.When did the writer’s life start to become different
A.When Joe fell ill in 2007. B.When Joe died in 2009. C.When Misty tried to please the writer. D.When the writer began to walk Misty.
67.Why did the writer continue to walk Misty while Joe was in hospital
A.Because she wanted to do some exercise. B.Because the walk brought her great peace. C.Because her friends didn’t want to help her. D.Because she didn’t want Misty to live with others.
68.What does the writer want to tell the readers in the passage
A.One should learn to enjoy hard times. B.A disaster can change everything in life. C.People will change when they are in difficulty. D.Moments of joy suggest that there is still hope ahead.
Polar Bears Could Die Out by the End of the Century
The heating of Earth is pushing the number of polar bears to get smaller and smaller. According to a new study, they could die out in fewer than 100 years.
Polar bears are animals which live by eating seals in the Arctic Ocean. As more and more sea ice melts (融化), their living places begin to shrink. The loss of sea ice began to be paid more attention at the end of the 1970s. Since then, sea ice that lasts for more than a year in the Arctic has decreased at a rate of 13% per decade (十年).
Studies have long shown that the growing loss of sea ice will lead to a dangerous situation for polar bears, but the new research shown in Nature Climate Change has given us a clear dying out timeline. Polar bears will be unable to live because of the climate change over the next several decades. The scientists believe they will completely die out by 2100.
“What we’ve found out is that, first, it will be very difficult for cubs (幼崽) to be born and live. Even if cubs are born, the mother polar bears won’t have enough body fat to produce milk to bring them along through the ice-free season.” said Dr. Steven Amstrup, a scientist of Polar Bears International, to the BBC. “We all know that we can’t go without food for a long time. That’s a natural need for all humans and animals.”
The research also shows that, even in a situation where many countries have done a lot of work to save polar bears, several populations of polar bears will die out. But Amstrup strongly believes that the animals can still do whatever they can do to live if the climate change does not go on getting worse.
“We must show how dangerous the situation is, because we have to do something now to stop the worst of future problems.” He said. “The way we’re on now is not good enough, but if society can do something together, we will have time to save polar bears. And if we do, we will do great good to other lives on Earth, and to ourselves too.”
69.The word “shrink” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A.get bigger B.get lighter C.get smaller D.get heavier
70.According to the passage, polar bears will probably die out because ________.
A.fewer animal scientists pay attention to them
B.sea ice becomes less because of climate change
C.the number of seal seals is getting bigger and bigger
D.seals in the Arctic Ocean don’t have enough body fat
71.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Why cubs are hard to be born and live in ice-free season.
B.Why humans and animals can’t live through without food.
C.Why mother polar bears can’t produce enough milk for cubs.
D.Why Dr. Steven Amstrup does the research about polar bears.
72.What is Dr. Steven Amstrup’s opinion on what many countries have done
A.What they have done works well, so polar bears will not die out.
B.What they have done doesn’t do any good, so they need to change.
C.What they have done is useful but not enough, so they need to do more.
D.What they have done makes things worse, so polar bears will die out soon.
Shirley, an elephant, has something to say. She opens her mouth and speaks. The nearby elephants understand the sound, but it is just noise to me.
What is Shirley exactly saying Scientists are not sure, but they are trying to find out how elephants communicate. I visited Shirley at the Elephant Sanctuary (避难所) in Hohenwald, Tennessee. The sanctuary is home of Shirley and five other elephants—Bunny, Jenny, Sissy, Tarra and Winkie. All six animals were once in zoos or circuses (马戏团). Now they walk freely in the forests.
A noisy group
Not all the elephants speak like Shirley. Tarra speaks like a sea lion when she is happy. Bunny squeaks (吱吱叫) often. I soon get used to hearing the different voices of the elephants. When one gray giant comes close to me, I know which elephant it is.
Elephants also communicate in a way that people can’t hear. Scientists believe that elephants’ sound can travel for kilometers. Elephants in a group use it to keep in touch when they are alone.
Old friends
The elephants speak to one another for the same reasons people talk. Sometimes they even shout with excitement. When Shirley first came to the sanctuary, Jenny looked at her and began to shout. Shirley shouted back. At first, the animal keepers had no idea what it was about. Later, they discovered (发现) that Shirley and Jenny had stayed together for 20 years earlier in a circus. They still knew each other.
________
There are two kinds of elephants—Asian elephants and African elephants. In the wild, both kinds are endangered. In 1970, about 100,000 Asian elephants lived in the wild in Southeast Asia. Now there are only 25,600 to 32,750 elephants living there. Their home is being gradually destroyed. As the population grows, humans are building on more of the land. In Africa, many wild elephants lived there 20 years ago. But today, only half of them still live there.
73.Which of the following can be put back into the blank
A.The wild elephants. B.African elephants. C.Asian elephants. D.Elephants in danger.
74.If there were 2 thousand wild elephants living in Africa 20 years ago, how many of them are still there now
A.25,600. B.32,750 C.1,000. D.10,000.
75.What can we infer (推断) from the passage
A.The animal keepers knew why Shirley and Jenny shouted to each other at first.
B.Elephants’ sound can travel to a faraway place.
C.Few elephants like to make noise.
D.Many elephants live alone.
76.The passage is most probably from ________.
A.a story book B.a travel guide C.a sports newspaper D.an animal magazine
Can you believe that mice can save people’s lives Now scientists are training mice to help save trapped (受困的) people after earthquakes.
This is a part of a special scientific project called “Hero Rats”. Dr. Donna Kean, a scientist from Scotland, is working on this project. She trains mice to wear very small bags with cameras and microphones (麦克风) inside. With the help of the mice, it will be easier for rescue (救援) teams to know what is going on under the bricks. Also, the teams can talk with trapped people to make them less nervous and afraid.
Mice are agile. They are good at moving through small spaces. They can live on anything and live in highly dangerous places. As a result, they are perfect for the searching work in earthquake areas. Last year, scientists trained mice to collect information and send it back. To their surprise, it only took seven mice two weeks to learn those skills. So scientists decided to train another 163 mice for other disasters (灾难).
But why not dogs Both of them have a good sense of smell, but the sense of mice is better than that of dogs. Moreover, people can catch, feed and take care of mice much more easily. They learn things very fast, and they don’t get bored as easily as dogs. They work better and harder.
Kean was glad that the mice could learn the skills so quickly. “They are amazing! I hope they will be able to save lives in the future.”
77.What can we learn about Donna Kean from Paragraph 2
A.She is an American scientist.
