  You might think it’s absurd (and maybe it is), but Oxford English Dictionary (OED) editors recently revealed that “run” has indeed become the single word with the most potential meanings in all of English, boasting no fewer than 645 different usage cases for the verb form alone.How could three little letters be responsible for so much meaning?
  Context is everything.Think about it: When you run a fever, for example, those three letters have a very different meaning than when you run a bath to treat it.You’d do things differently if you ran the world.Maybe you should run for office.
  It bears mentioning that “run” didn’t always have the run of the dictionary.When the OED’s first edition came out in 1928 (after 70 years of editorial research), the longest entry belonged to another three-letter juggernaut:“set.” Even today, the print edition of the OED contains some 200 meanings, beginning with “put, lay, or stand (something) in a specified place or position”, and continuing on for about 32 pages.
  So what happened? Why is “run” suddenly the Swiss Army Knife of verbs? British author Simon Winchester fancies it “a feature of our more energetic and frantic times”, making words like “set” seem almost boring and passive by comparison.“Run” appears to have earned some major lift during the boom of the Industrial Revolution, when all manner of mechanized innovation adopted it as their verb of choice.“Machines run, clocks run, computers run — there are all of those (meanings) which began in the middle of the 19th century,” Winchester says.
  So, ready to run through the whole list of definitions? Alas, to read all 645 meanings you’ll have to wait for the next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.The print run is expected in 2037.

  (2024·临汾高一下期末)In Fujian Province during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) there lived a man called Yang Shi.He devoted his whole life to study, and to spreading his ideas and theories.At that time, the brothers Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, famous scholars in the capital, Luoyang, were teachers of the Way of Confucius and Mencius.
  When Yang Shi heard of them, instead of going to where an official post had been assigned to him, he made his way to Luoyang and became Cheng Hao’s student.When Yang Shi finished his studies and left for home, Cheng Hao said with satisfaction, “My ideas are finally being spread in the south.” Four years later, Cheng Hao died and Yang Shi was extremely sad.
  Later, Yang Shi made his way once more to Luoyang, where he asked Cheng Yi, Cheng Hao’s younger brother, to be his teacher.He wanted to make further progress in his studies.At that time Yang Shi was over forty years old, and a pretty well-known scholar, but he was very modest and respectful of teachers.
  One day, Yang Shi and a fellow student, You Zuo, got into a dispute over a certain matter.Finding that they could not reconcile their differences, they decided to consult their teacher.
  It happened to be the deep winter.When they reached Cheng Yi’s house they found him sitting by a stove meditating (冥想).Yang Shi and his classmate did not dare to disturb their teacher, but stood respectfully outside the door waiting for him to wake up.
  The snow fell relentlessly, thicker and thicker.After a long time, Cheng Yi came out of his reverie.He looked out of the window, to see the two men standing in a blizzard, covered in snow.The teacher hastily arose and ushered them inside.
  Later, when Yang Shi had completed his study with Master Cheng Yi, he returned to the south and spread his teacher’s ideas.The story “Standing in the Snow at Cheng’s Door” became a fine tale transmitted from generation to generation advocating respect for teachers and for study.

  Life for anyone who comes to London, whether it is for work, study or play will be much easier if they have a basic grasp of English.Indeed, it is not just desirable but in many cases it is now mandatory.
  A recent change in immigration law requires that most people will need to prove that their English is good enough to allow them to study or work in the UK.
  This is the service provided by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is one of the world’s leading and most-widely accepted English language tests.
  If you come from outside the EU, and unless you are a research scientist or successful businessman, you will need to pass a language proficiency (水平) test in order to be able to study or work here.
  Carl Rhymer is head of IELTS at the British Council.“IELTS has grown with the growing importance of English, which is spoken by about two billion people.English is spoken more by non-native speakers than it is by native speakers,” says Carl.
  “We recognise that it is an international language and I don’t think you can say that British English is the real English,” insists Carl.“We’ve developed a test that allows people to measure themselves against a set of standards.We’re not standard-setters ourselves.The beauty of English is that it develops not just within the country but also the influences that come from outside.”
  Someone who is coming to the UK to study may only need to achieve a band five score, while someone coming here to work as a medical doctor must demonstrate that they have excellent English and therefore they will need to score an eight or nine.
