第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
With barely-populated places, long coastlines and incredible mountains, Canada offers visitors a wide range of experiences all year round. But fall is the best time to begin your love affair with the unique side of Canada!
Churchill
Churchill, in northern Manitoba, is known as the polar bear capital of the world, with nearly 1,000 bears in the area. Accessible only by plane or train(the line closes for winter in early November), the fall offers the best opportunities to observe them in the wild. And with luck, northern lights may dance across the sky while you’ re there.
Jasper
From the Atlantic coast in Kejimkujik National Park in Nova Scotia, to the plains of Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan, and to the rocky mountains in Jasper, Alberta, these are places where the stars shine brightest. Each October, the Dark Sky Festival in Jasper celebrates the beauty of its clear skies with music performances, photography workshops, and related lectures.
Carleton Provincial Park
From coast to coast, the changing of the leaves each fall gives Canadians a new excuse to get out and enjoy their favourite places set ablaze in a sea of reds and golds. Join the locals and hike one of the four peaks in Carleton Provincial Park, New Brunswick, to stand above 10 million maple trees painted in warm colours and feel completely alone in enjoying their beauty.
Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island bills itself as “Canada’s Food Island”, and it certainly has all the right ingredients: an abundance of fresh seafood pulled from its shores, and varied produce harvested from the rich red soil. The five-week long Flavours Festival that runs through September to early October each year is a massive foodie celebration.
21. Where is the Dark Sky Festival held
A. In Alberta. B. In Nova Scotia.
C. In Manitoba. D. In Saskatchewan.
22. What is recommended for visitors to see in Carleton Provincial Park
A. Polar bears. B. Dark skies. C. Maple trees. D. Northern lights.
23. When does the Flavours Festival end
A. In September. B. In early October. C. In early November. D. In December.
B
In any normal week, the launch of Europa Clipper on October 14 would be in the headlines all over the world. But it was shadowed by the successful test flight the previous day of the Starship developed by SpaceX.
“SpaceX was founded to revolutionise (颠覆) space technology, with the goal of sending people to live on other planets,” says Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO. “In 2026, SpaceX will send five unmanned Starships to Mars. Crews will follow perhaps four years later. I hope hundreds of Starships and tens of thousands of people will be sent to Mars every year in the near future.”
Mr Musk is extremely inaccurate when it comes to predicting when his companies will achieve his goals. Starship was meant to have been flying years ago. Fully self-driving (FSD) cars from Tesla, a car company which he runs, have often been postponed, too. And whenever the crewed missions start, potential settlers can expect a hard and possibly horrible time. Though Mars looks a bit like the American West, it is a place without liquid water and breathable air, let alone materials to be used for shelter or food. Efforts to set up new societies have failed even in much more suitable places on Earth.
But Starships will open up the possibility of other previously impossible enterprises (项目). They will allow SpaceX to increase the capacity of its Starlink satellite-communications system beyond anything previously possible. Other companies may use Starship to launch space stations. One contract for a commercial Starship trip around the Moon has been canceled, but there will surely be others. Astronomers can dream of much bigger space telescopes now. Generals are already thinking dark thoughts about what might be dropped on whom, and how petitors in the world will try to surpass what SpaceX has done.
In short, after Starship’s successful test flight, normal weeks in space may soon look very different.
24. Why is Europa Clipper mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To compare its design with another spaceship. B. To stress the significance of SpaceX’s test flight.
C. To tell its competing relationship with SpaceX. D. To complain about the media’s unfair coverage.
25. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. Elon Musk’s ambition. B. SpaceX’s new test schedules.
C. The significance of the test. D. The potentials of space technology.
26. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. Tesla should focus on its FSD cars. B. Elon Musk is a very bad CEO.
C. SpaceX should try to meet its goal. D. It is unlikely to settle on Mars.
27. What does the author imply in paragraph 4
A. Starships will become outdated soon.
B. Policies should be made to prevent misuses.
C. The test flight will have a big impact on the world.
D. Space technology should be used to benefit humanity.
C
After moving to the US from Italy in the 1910s, Caesar Cardini opened a restaurant in Sacramento and later in San Diego. But to escape the 14-year experiment of Prohibition (禁酒令) that started in 1920, he went to Mexico and started his business in the border city Tijuana in 1927, where a lot of Americans went to the bars for drinks and meals throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
According to Caesar’s daughter, Rosa, her father invented the famous dish, Caesar’ s Salad, on 4 July 1924 when the restaurant was doing such good business on American Independence Day that it was running short of supplies in the kitchen. So her father threw together what was left and the odd mixture turned out to be an immediate hit.
Despite the salad’s name and Rosa Cardini’s famous story, it’s still unclear who actually invented the dish. In her book, The Essential Cuisines of Mexico, Mexican food authority Diana Kennedy suggests the salad was actually created by Caesar’s brother, Alex. According to Kennedy, Alex started working in the restaurant business at age 10 in Italy, before becoming a pilot in WWI and then moving to Tijuana in 1926 to open his own restaurant. “First called Aviator’s Salad, it was improved by Caesar and then became well-known. So I shall call it as it should be called: Alex-Caesar Cardini Salad,” Kennedy wrote.
One of Caesar’s business partners, Paul Maggiora, also claimed that he was the first to make the salad. Still another version of the story credits a young employee at Caesar’s: Livio Santini. Also from Italy, Santini moved to Tijuana in 1924, landed a job cooking for Cardini and made the salad according to his mother’s recipe.
We may never know the real story of whether Caesar, Alex, Livi o or Paul created the dish, but one thing is for certain: It’s a cross-cultural food — truly a mixed salad — and a dish worth crossing borders for.
28. When was Prohibition cancelled
A. In the 1910s. B. In the 1920s. C. In the 1930s. D. In the 1940s.
29. What did Rosa Cardini say about Caesar’s Salad
A. It was invented by joint efforts. B. It is a typical American dish.
C. It is made from select materials. D. It was created with leftovers.
30. What is Diana Kennedy’s conclusion in her book
A. Caesar’s Salad is a cross-cultural food. B. Rosa Cardini’s father improved the salad.
C. Caesar’s Salad is based on a stolen recipe. D. The salad should be called Aviator’s Salad.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A. To study the origin of a dish. B. To advertise a Mexican restaurant.
C. To introduce a new tasty salad. D. To show the food diversity in the US.
D
The Nobel prizes have always, in their way, honoured human intelligence. This year, for the first time, the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) has been recognised as well.
That recognition began on October 8, 2024 when the physics prize was awarded to John Hopfield of Princeton University and Geoffrey Hinton of the University of Toronto for computer-science breakthroughs that are vital to the development of today’s most powerful AI models.
Hinton and Hopfield did their crucial work in the early 1980s. Hopfield was responsible for what has become known as the Hopfield network—a type of artificial neural network that was loosely modeled on the way the networks of nerve cells or neurons are believed to work in human brains. Hinton’s contribution was to use an algorithm (算法) known as backpropagation to train neural networks.
It is the activities of these two researchers that have made machine learning really sing. AI models can now not only learn, but create. Such tools have thus gone from being able to perform highly specific tasks, such as analyzing mountains of data, to writing essays for lazy students.
The next day, the developers of two powerful AI models also received a call from the Nobel Prize committee. David Baker, a biochemist at the University of Washington, received one half of the chemistry prize for his computer-aided work designing new proteins. Using a computer program he had named Rosetta, Baker succeeded in designing a completely new protein in 2003. The program, now called Rosetta Commons, has become a software package used by protein chemists around the world.
The prize’s other half went to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper from Google’ s DeepMind for their development of AlphaFold, a program capable of predicting 3D protein structure, a long-time challenge in biochemistry. Though many wonder if it is too soon for AlphaFold to be recognised, it has already had real impact: About 2 million scientists have already used it in their research. AlphaFold 3, released in May, goes beyond proteins to predict the structure of a host of other biomolecules, such as DNA.
32. What can be learned about the Hopfield network
A. It is a group of real nerve cells. B. It offers a way to train neural networks.
C. It is one of the latest AI models. D. It provides a foundation for AI models.
33. What is David Baker’s contribution
A. He used AI to help create new proteins.
B. He developed many powerful AI models.
C. He found a new way to build neural networks.
D. He upgraded Rosetta to predict DNA structures.
34. What is the author’s attitude to the prize for AlphaFold
A. Critical. B. Skeptical. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Why Is the Physics Prize Awarded to AI B. AI Wins Big at the Nobel Prizes This Year!
C. New AI Models Have Received Recognition! D. Is It Too Soon for AI to Win the Nobel Prizes

Frank enjoyed making fun of anyone. Since he was so tall and strong, few of his victims dared to fight back. Mike, one of the victims, hated the idea that Frank could always avoid punishment for his wrongdoing. Yet like most kids, he just took it quietly, almost every day.
This morning, Mike saw the trouble coming again. There standing in the hallway was Frank. So he stepped aside for the unpleasant guy to pass. Frank walked up and looked at the books in Mike’s arms.
“Hey, let me see those books!” Frank said.
Frank picked a book, looked inside for a second and then threw it back into Mike’s arms, knocking all the other books to the floor.
With his cheeks turning red, Mike tried to kick the fallen books after Frank was out of sight.
“You need to find a way to end this,” a friendly voice said. It was from Ramon, the most athletic boy in the high school. Mike couldn’t believe that Ramon was stopping to help him since they barely spoke.
“Thanks!” Mike sighed. “But how ”
“Whenever I had a problem with someone, my mother would say, ‘You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar (醋),’” Ramon said.
“What does that mean ” Mike asked.
“It means kindness may be more effective than anger,” Ramon explained.
“Can you just tell Frank to stop picking on me ” Mike suggested.
“That’s vinegar,” Ramon laughed as he walked away. “Try honey, instead.”
Ramon’s words left Mike thinking
Then the unexpected thing happened. Frank returned with a basketball in his arms. Mike didn’t know what Frank intended to, but he felt sure he was about to make fun of him again. Just as he was thinking how he should respond, he heard a loud “bang” — Frank slipped and fell down. The classmates burst into laughter, and someone even whispered, “Thank God!”

M: Yeah, he is. And a storybook is one place where you do need proper heroes.
W: I’m with you there. I have read loads of storybooks which are close to reality and I surely wouldn’t get to the end if they didn’t have heroes. Too boring.

20. What did Katie Treggiden suggest furniture companies do
A. Reduce the costs. B. Use safer materials. C. Lengthen products’ life cycle.
【答案】17. B 18. C 19. B 20. C
【原文】M: Russian designer Harry Nuriev’s latest sofa is made from a pile of waste bags. He wants it to draw attention to waste things and how we use them. The piece was based on an idea he first explored at a fair in 2019, when he presented a sofa made from old clothes. The project commented on the fashion industry’s waste problem, which is mainly generated by cheap, trend-responsive “fast fashion”. The project also drew a direct line between the waste problem and the furniture industry. It’s estimated that 9 million tons of furniture are thrown away every single year, and over 80% of it ends up in landfill. Add to that the carbon releases caused by producing and shipping it, and the furniture industry looks like another threat to the global climate. With so much waste furniture, brands that make typically “fast” furniture are announcing efforts to change. Some companies commit to using only renewable or recyclable materials to cut carbon release. Katie Treggiden, design expert and author of Wasted: When Trash Becomes Treasure, said that having a long life has been a key selling message among responsible furniture companies for a long time. She added they also need to offer repair and take-back service to give their products a second life.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seeing Frank’s awkward situation, Mike was ready to join in the laughter.

【答案】
Seeing Frank’s awkward situation, Mike was ready to join in the laughter. But at that moment, he remembered Ramon’s words, “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” So, he made a decision that surprised everyone. Mike ran after Frank’s basketball. When he handed it back to Frank, he saw the shock in Frank’s eyes. His classmates also instantly quieted down, stopping their laughter at Frank. A former victim even joined Mike to help Frank.
Frank said “Thanks!” in a very low voice before he walked away. Since then, Frank didn’t pick on Mike as he had done before. Nor did he make fun of the other classmates. Although Frank did not apologize for his previous behavior, Mike knew that Ramon was right. On occasions, kindness is indeed much more effective than anger. Sometimes, we do need to use honey to deal with “flies” like Frank.
